What was this machine for? - Restoration

  • In today's video, we showed the renovation of the Dengelfix scythe, which is more than 100 years old.
This device is screwed to the table, the scythe is guided through the device and the blade is flattened by turning the crank.
This lever regulates the width of the blade, narrow and wide, it should be 3 - 6 mm.
Finally, lightly drag the scythe with a whetstone. The use of the scythe has been documented in Europe since the early Iron Age, especially the so-called short scythe mounted on the mower at an obtuse angle. Since the Middle Ages, long scythes, similar to today's, have been replaced.
And nowadays scythes are used very little. They have been replaced by mechanical equipment such as agricultural and domestic lawn mowers. If you liked our video, leave subscription, like, share.
And one last question at the end of the ball are you ever scythe? or have you tried mowing with this traditional scythe on the grass?
Write us your experience in the comments Have a nice day and see you again next time :)
If you have any information, you can share it with others on my Facebook page:
    / 951735661652138
If you have any questions about the process, use machines or other things, ask me in the comments. I try to answer everyone and as soon as possible.
I'm sorry for my bad English, it's not my language.
I'm uploading videos about restoring mechanical things. I'm uploading videos about the restoration of old wooden things. I fix things as best I can. I am self-taught. Therefore, if some procedures are wrong, forgive me. Thank you.
If you like this renewal, share and send :)

Dengelfix - german (may be bavarian) word "dengeln" means sharpening a scythe by hammering

      Its a two part german „Lego“ word…
Dengeln means sharpening by hammering, fix means fast, so its a fast sharpener.

Another excellent and carefully done restoration. I would never have guessed this device was for sharpening scythes. I wondered if it was a hand tool for b ending metal tubing. Thank you

if i understand the comments below the video, it's not actually for sharpening the scythe, but for flattening the blade after it has become kinked and warped from use. i suppose that such scythes are probably quite thin metal and they easily become dented

This one had me guessing to the end. I used a Scythe at my Grand-Pa's farm in Lemoore CA, USA.
It was a short one he said but to me, 8-10 years old, it looked like a sword attached to a shovel handle, lol now.
But to get the dents, from hitting Rocks, out of the blade he used a small square faced heavy hammer and then a file to sharpen it.
The funny thing is, when I was about 16, Dad told me that Grand Pa really did like us to come over because back then I could find Rocks he never could find when cutting the high grass. Fun Times!

When i was a kid we had a tiny anvil (about 2 fingers wide) stuck in a large wooden log that you sit on. Then you use a large flat hammer and that anvil to reshape the blade before using the oval whetstone to sharpen it. If the damage was really bad, we had a handcranked large (around 2 feet or 60cm diameter) grindingstone wheel too that would get all kinds of farming tools sharp again. Good old times...

I found this very interesting, I worked as a kennel maid for a time as a teenager. One of my jobs there was to use a scythe on the grass which the dogs could play on. I sharpened this with a whet stone . I was fifteen, my first job after leaving school. Now I will be seventy next month, This brought back lots of memories.

Grandpa, who passed in the 1960's, cut the yard with a scythe. Every time I see a Grim Reaper I'm reminded of Grandpa. I still have his scythe hanging in the garage, it's in need of sharpening.

And the name of that 'hand-scythe' is 'sickle'. in. English. Not so much fun than real sickle the multi tool of patch and field. There are heavy sickles enough to cut wrist-thick woods.
Sickle had little advantage as decent weapon so never be a popular choice. The advantage of sickle weapon was concealed weapon - disguising local petit peasants. I mean really. That's a true fact of historical ninja not NINJA

Just started video. My guess is,,,,,,,,,,probably wrong! I'll guess it is a thing for pressing detents into some other thing. Now to watch and see just how wrong I am.--- Yep,I was very wrong. It is for reshaping a blade edge before sharpenning, probably after hitting rocks and such. I'm in my early 60s and occasionally used a scythe but it was more for novelty than serious work and it was long ago. I have not even seen one in real life since, well,I don't remember when!

I have seen professionals flatten their scythe with a hammer and a special small anvill. In duch we call this 'haren' (hair, meaning making as thin as a hair). Another beautiful restoration!
    Thanks!
Years ago (late '70's) I was a volunteer in US National parks, forests, and Designated Wilderness areas.
On one occasion a small fire got started near a grassland area adjacent to a forest, both of which were within the boundaries of a designated Wilderness Area. We needed to cut enough of the tall grass to cut off the fire's path to the forest. Since no motor-driven devices (among many other things) are allowed in a Wilderness we had to cut the grass with large scythes to successfully cut off the fires path. It might have been kind of fun but for the urgency. The scythes? The Ranges kept such tools for just such situations. And razor-sharp!

  • @Ragnar8504
    @Ragnar8504 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The name kinda gives it away if you speak German and are familiar with how scythes are used and cared for. I can't really use one myself but I've watched people do it quite a few times.
Fun trivia: to this very day, the Austrian traffic code prohibits riding a bicycle while carrying a scythe. At some point someone on Facebook wondered who on earth would do that anyway and how old and outdated that had to be. Apparently that person never spent much time in the countryside because I have very vivid memories of watching an elderly farmer sling a scythe over his shoulder and set off on his wife's bike in the 90s and early 2000s!

Scrolling through TH-cam. Are you some type of antique show or something ? If you were then you would know that this was Henry Mansfield's invention that he patented in 1922 It is a pullet pecker puller which was used to pull the peckers off to produce a pullet. the lever was adjusted left or right depending on the length of the pullet pecker and cranking the handle would pull off pullets pecker and snap it off then presto ! Pullet produced ! It was never in wide use because of the one weak spot in his design. you can see the tiny screw on the bottom used to clamp it to the edge of a table while you were pulling pullet peckers was too weak to withstand the rigors and the twisting. the ball bearings that you see were used to capture the peckers, and reduce it into a puppy paste, which was later used as as cattle feed. it's not really valuable. today it might bring 50 bucks. Just sayin

I didn't know such machines existed before I watched your restoration. I'm very pleased that you demonstrated its use at the end of your video. I have never used a scythe myself but have watched other people cutting rushes to be used for roofing thatch. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from your friends in England.

Wirklich erstaunlich, was die Leute damals bereits alles bauen konnten.
Ebenso erstaunlich, was ihr daraus gemacht habt. Erstklassige Arbeit
    Frohe Weihnachten wünsche ich.
