Lovely music. I don't really care what is the origin of this instrument. (Im Chinese, I think this is 100% viet instrument and music). The only thing it matters is how good the musician plays. Dan is a very talentive musician, I was surprised that how can he play such a good music by an instrument with only one string, you got to give him a big credit. Respect.
As a Canadian I am very pleased to have Dan Bau Thanh making his home in Canada.I sat listening to him perform for hours.I wish that he would go on tour across Canada to give the rest us an opportunity to experience the Vietnamese Chinese culture and his sensitivity as a master of that ancient instrument ,Bravo!
What an awesome instrument! The only people who could say that this instrument is easy are people who themselves AREN'T musicians! The untrained viewer just sees a guy plucking one string. But anyone with an ear for melodic sequencing, trills, and rhythmic subtleties realizes just how fine and sensitive the instrumentalist must be!

no actually it is a vietnamese instrument brought over to china by those who migrated during the 16th century. look it up on wikipedia. if you got facts that say it's from china, link it or give the search phrase to use on wikipedia. I'm just believing it's from Vietnam because I see this instrument's use in more Vietnamese culture than Chinese, and many sites I keep running into implies Vietnamese origin. I know there's a Chinese version, but version's no relation to historical origins.
I would LOVE to see you try... actually I would pay for that. xD if you actually saw this video you should have seen how difficult it really is. Maybe there are other instruments with one string which are easy to play, but this one seems a little bit more of a challenge.

On Wikipedia it says Vietnamese refugees brought it to China. If you don't trust Wikipedia, every website about dan bau will say it is purely Vietnamese. I don't read Chinese but I assume websites about duxianqin will mention it originating from Vietnamese too. Same here, I love listening to traditional music, especially Asian. I kinda got tired of classical even though I study it for piano.
some chinese dialects have more tones than Vietnamese. this one resembles Vietnamese, but it's one of the dialects that actually has FEWER tones than Vietnamese.

Ok, if people from vietnam still would say that specific instrument belongs to vietnam. Then I can simply say it also belongs to China because there is a minority group in China called JING, which is ethnically the same as people in Vietnam. They also use this instrument. Therefore, techically, we can also say it is Chinese. However, I do think it is useless to agrue about it. Just enjoy that music and try out best to let westerners know and play this. That is more interesting!!!
