You can learn the Dan Bau easily because an instruction book is included. The teachings are slow and easy to understand.

I have purchased a mono chord instrument about five years ago during my tour in Vietnam. Since then I have been searching for someone or material in Singapore on how to play this instrument. In fact I have been search the web sites but no one seem to know anything about mono chord or dan bau a few years back. I am glad Duc Thanh had posted this self learning video in the TH-cam.
There is a recording which I'm very thrilled by entitled (Ghost) Rider In The Sky by Dan Bau Vietnam on a wonderful cd release on the Trikont label. I did not realise that Dan Bau was the name of the instrument being played as the artist takes this as part of his name as well. This was a great introduction to what appears to be a very lucid instructional series.

I love your music!! I bought a Dan Bau and I am trying to get more than one note out of it. Moving the plectrum up and down the string has no effect when I do it. How do you make different notes on the Dan Bau? Is the string tuned to C? What octave?
I would like to buy, if it´s into my budget possibilities, the Dan Bau. I would also appreciate information on concerts in Madrid, Spain.

What do you mean by the "block point"? The plectrum? Why must it be "raised"? Do you pinch the string between the finger and the plectrum? Are you dealing with harmonics to create pitch differences? Is the joystick played by the left hand?

I also play the Dan Bau.
First of all, it's quite hard to hit a a note. Lifting the hand too soon will just lead to the note, you tuned the Dan Bau; lifting the hand too late will cause a dull sound.
Then you have to get the feeling to move that stick. The slightest movement will cause a different tone.
I'd say it's quite hard to learn, but harder to master.
I hope I didn't discourage you. I really recommend playing the Dan Bau. You'll get a completely new feeling to music.

Must the Dan Bau be electrified? It doesn't make harmonics just acoustically? I can amplify it, but I'd rather not, if possible. Is that screw down by the bridge supposed to touch the string? What is it there for?
does anyone know what he uses to pluck the string with? my uncle in vietnam had to shave down a chopstick, and it doesnt sound as good as w/e he is using

My E harmonic, the second one, will only play an octave higher than the other notes. What would cause this? Do I have a faulty string I must replace?

You must "raise" your plucking hand after heeling the harmonic so that you don't dampen what you've just done.

The Dan Bau is just fine as an electric instrument; too quiet acoustic. The screw by the bridge does not touch the string; it holds the electric pick-up in place. You do not use the heel of your hand to evoke the harmonic; use your pinkie as you pluck.
My teacher can teach online for cheap price ~ around 5~ 6 US dollars/lesson :) it is a great price for beginner
