I feel like Glutonny was starting to be in contention for a potential #1 contender in the second half of the year, though obviously getting 17th here shut down any hopes of that.
I feel Gluto has to be the ultimate gatekeeper. He has been the most consistent top player over time I feel. Other ones have had big falls but Gluto feels like he's perpetual
I would still lobby for him to be in the top 5. He’s had a very good track record this season in spite of Port Priority, and while Tweek hasn’t gotten a 17th place finish like Gluto has, he’s also fallen short of the top 8 way more times than Gluto has

Sparg0's a very weird case. Imagine being able to destroy everyone in top 5 but then drop to a #30.
Ultimate is volatile and has 80 characters. That's just too many matchups and variance. Anyone can get sharked. Well almost anyone.

Acola: the king of consistency
Sparg0: turbo-shits on the other top 4 but has the potential to get upset.
Miya: functionally does the exact same thing as acola with 2nd place instead of first.
Sonix: probably improved the most of everyone here this year, easily my bet for #1 for 2024
Miya has been beating Acola recently though
Sparg0 might be beating Sonix, but they're kind of even-ish. Last time they played Sonix win in winners and Sparg0 won grands, and back in GOML it was the other way around (I think)
But, it's also important to consider the fact that Sparg0 hasn't played Acola since Battle of BC 5 and Miya since Kagaribi 10, so it's hard to think of it so highly given the time gap (especially with Miya, who has improved so so much)
I think Sonix was prepared for Miya this time but I think he lacks the creativity and depth that Miya has. If Miya gets the chance to play someone over time it seems he breaks the matrix and downloads the opponent like no-one we’ve ever seen before.
To me it looked like it already happened at PP8 I was really surprised that Sonic managed to clutch the GF reset.
My prediction is that Miya will win their next set(s) and that after that it will take a miracle for Sonix to catch up since his only gameplan is getting the lead and threaten the timeout. If people figure out how to pressure that then what’s left for Sonix to do? Without the threat of timeout he will not be able to win and #1 consistently.
I guess we’ll see at WTT if I’m right :)
Sonix has said he has been preparing for Acola way more (or at least he said how much he prepared for Acola, not how much he prepared for Miya). I think Sonix is a very very hard worker and could also prepare for Miya very well
@@user-hh7fn3yd8g you could be right :) I guess WTT will give us the answer. But I stand by my point that I think Miya is the most adaptable player we’ve seen in ultimate.

Maybe just tunnel visioning on the super-stacked tourney win, but Sonix's run here seems to be strikingly similar to Amsa's Yoshi run at Big House last year.
Smash is sick
the doubted low tier aspect and 20 year history is lacking but both may come later. Ultimate is a deep game if it gets pushed that long, id compare this more to mango’s first big win with jigglypuff. He likely solidified Sonic as a top tier character despite their seemingly simplistic moveset just by maximizing a couple really strong moves used perfectly

Unfortunately the #1 race isnt really close in ultimate imo, but the #2 race (specifically between miya sparg0 and sonix) is very interesting
acola doesnt have a winning record on sparg0 miya or sonix, does that mean he cant be #1, absolutely not, is he in the lead, probably, but is the #1 still up for grabs, id certainly say so
@@raintalonxOcyeah but he can’t be moved if his worst placement is 7th at genesis at a P tier. He has a turbo record of winning game 5 with a 90%, he places top 8 100% and top 2 95% of the time. Plus, he won the biggest event of the year SSC. His match ups against the top 50 is immaculate compared to the other contenders.
@@raintalonxOc What carries Acola hard is his consistency. Every top player have its "fall down" but only Acola is up there. He can lose to the 3 players below him but he literally beats everyone else. While those do struggle either with each other or have potential players that can beat them. Sonix loses hard to Light , and somewhat DD can give him the Pacman again, Sparg0 can turbo clap the Top 4 and still get upset before Top 64 , Miya is really good and have been getting better but he does get upset too. So yeah , I do agree with Acola been #1 but the #2 Spot is for the grabs , but I do believe Miya have the best arguements for it.

Not to discredit or anything but I see few people who know the difference between spin dash and spin charge
To be fair, the game makes it truly as unclear as possible in the moment
But yeah as a competitor its your job to know those things 💀

@@randomzergling okay so: spindash doesn’t have a mash mechanic, has invincibility on startup, hits a single time, and cannot crossup shield
Spincharge: you mash to increase its charge, hits multiple times, can crossup/through shield, has no invincibility
Both can be canceled into spinjump, which makes them safe on shield/parry when they make contact
I’m no sonic main myself, so i may be missing some nuances, but those are the major points

uhh the win percentages at end are wrong like really wrong. couple instances of the same win loss with different percentages and many other odd things, I dont think a single one of Sonix's percentages is right

Acola attempting to play anyone other than Steve at this level was the funniest part of Port. Kid isn’t even close to a top 5 player without Steve’s kit playing entire parts of the game for him.

Awesome tournament with a top 4 ruined by two sonics
Sonix is #1
The thing about Acola though was that he was having controller issues the whole tournament. Like he sent my boy Umeki down to losers with a faulty controller (the peach who beat MuteAce in top 8). He just seemed really tilted from his controller issues so his losses weren't as convincing for me this tournament.

Sparg0’s results against the top 5 make him the best player imo. His biggest problem is that he plays two characters that are very prone to being upset and are difficult to play for an entire tournament. If he was good with Steve Sonic or GnW he’d very clearly be consistent.

Leo preforms so much better with the high tier byleath then he dose with the top tier bthra because byleath fits his play style so well etc
I think #1 is still unambiguously acola. like, he's just got consistency unlike anyone else. his head to heads against the top few players aren't amazing, but he only loses to them while they lose to a buncha random barely top 100 players. I feel like the people saying it's miya or sonix are just recency biasing, and the people saying sparg0 are caring about consistency less than I would. I think the race for #2 is interesting, and I'd currently prolly give it to sparg0 because of how well he does against the other top few players (he has been inconsistent but miya and sonix haven't been so consistent that it's enough to take it imo), but the year is not over and it's certainly still up in the air

The way how it goes on the "4 way fight"
- Acola should be #1 , he is stupid consistent and his worst placement was Genesis where only Sparg0 from losers was able to stop him
- Miya is pretty much like Acola but either gets Top 3 - Top 2 and sometimes 1st, He just needs more Ws and he is giving Acola a run of his money
- Sparg0 is like a coin flip , he wins the whole tournament or gets upset and is out before top 8. Also Sparg0 is the only one with positive records vs Acola and Sonix
- Sonix is pretty much an insane player that have been climbing all his way up , and pretty much can beat both Acola and Miya , can be 50/50 vs Sparg0 but loses to Light and maybe to others
- I think as a general consensus , the current best players at the moment are Miya and Sonix but we can all agree that Acola is number 1 and rank 2-4 is heavily under dispute.

I gotta be honest... It feels like hypocrisy that people hate smash 4 so much but act like ultimate was okay. At least Bayo was exciting, at least things happened. Ultimate has the most boring roster of top tiers in any fighting game.
Idk, Steve doesn't have the grapple hold bayo bad in 4 and the meta while crystalized (I mean the game is half a decade old) still has surprises under its sleeves

man, we hate to see sonix win.
We should acknowledge Sonix’s hard work and talent, yes. But we should criticize him for his choice of character/play style and never ever congratulate or celebrate a player who plays every single game 100% for the timeout or the threat of timeout.
Didn't go for a timeout in any game against Acola.
Sonic might be a really lame character, but he is no where near as free as Steve is.
