Mercury Morris former professional football halfback. With the Miami Dolphins he won the Super Bowl in 1973 and 1974. Morris was also elected to three NFL Pro Bowls.

I've always appreciated natural athletes w/power. Ricky Henderson was similar, in Baseball, imo. When Morris came in to replace Kick at the end of the first or near the start of the second quarter, it COMPLETELY messed up the defense for quite a few plays, until they adjusted to another warp-speed. Almost would guarantee field-position for the next few sets of downs. Amazing to watch. And Warfield in the backfield, grabbing balls out of thin air, like a gazelle; and few could take it out of his strong hands. Great team; one of the all-time best!
Mercury Morris was the lightning to Csonka's thunder. Amazing highlights. Recognized Barry Sanderslike tendencies in his running style. Hard to watch him being lifted and bodyslammed into astroturf, though. Like being dropped onto concrete covered by a threadbare area rug. While I miss the days when points were harder to come by, when the NFL wasn't a track meet in shoulder pads, I also understand the league's attempts to do away with such tactics. There are so many players from that era of multipurpose, hard surfaced stadiums who are suffering with a variety of debilitating maladies.

Jim Hart, Mel Gray, Jackie Smith, Dan Dierdorf, the infamous Conrad Dobler. Offensive line that set record for fewest sacks allowed. Then Coryell took that offensive pattern to San Diego.

recently read, it was mercury who was consistently visiting jim Kiick during his toughest times this last year.... many people really misread Merc not only in regards to his underrated talent on the field, but the fact that is a loyal good guy.

Plus Kiick and Griese/Morrall scrambles, the Dolphins rushed for around three thousand yards. Incredible.). Shula was brilliant recognizing what kind of backfield he had. He said "I'd run Merc in run/pass situations and Kiick in pass/run situations." He called it situation substitution. I'm assuming he invented the term. Much like the fifty-three with Matheson although that was really just his number. Then when he realized what he had with Marino, Moore and the Marks Brothers it was take off time. Great coaches adapt to what they have and what works for that team. I've been rooting for Miami since Super Bowl VI. Unfortunately the last 20 years have sucked so bad. I've got faith in Gase so hopefully there'll be a real turnaround. And hopefully Brady will retire sometime in this century!

I lived in Philly, but was a Dolphin fan ALL MY LIFE. We used to tease the NFLers in School. We used to say the NFL was boring. The AFL was exciting. Teams like the Raiders, Chargers, Dolphins, Jets, Bills. The NFL had Bears, Packers, Browns (Ha,hahaha) The AFL ran double reverses, flea flickers, Long Bombs. The NFL was boring, 2 runs up the Middle and a pass. All The Time. Then they Merged and my Dolphins Kicked Ass. Shame what they did to the Uniforms and Logos. That's NOT the Dolphins, don't know what that shit is.
He was the greatest juke master think he kinda created that stuttered run that the greats who followed all copied! Barry Sanders later had incredible cuts and great speed! Walter Payton was the only one who could match Mercury Morris in juke-ability. Larry Csonka, Earl Campbell were more like "Beastmode" all tough as nails.
Such a dangerous halfback, could break one on any play . Very strong for a halfback, great moves. Miami didn't get great until they started Morris. They stuck with Jim Kick too long. ( a whiteboy).
