Greatest football player. Every down back. Most complete football player. Until the 80s he had absolutely no offensive line or a decent QB. He was the Chicago Bears. He played like a gladiator. When Payton came he brought his lunch box and it was gonna be dog fight for every inch of ground. There was no let up. This guy went into the 4th qtr with the same ferociousness as the start of the game. The man was 5ft 10 and played like he was 6ft 4, putting MLBs on their rear ends. He had top level talent, top level skills and he had great game intelligence. He was effective even without the ball.

Grew up in Chicago. Saw his whole career. He had his share of fumbles. To say he never fumbles is silly.

@@alanmewse590 Anyone who averages 20 touches per game for years and years in the NFL is going to fumble sometimes. It's part of the job . . . if you're gonna recount plays, be accurate . . . the play in the Super Bowl was his second carry. It was also the 2nd play from scrimmage after the opening kickoff.
When Walter scored a TD, he never "showboated". He just tossed the football to an official, or to his teammates for them to celebrate. What a great and humble man!!!
Because he knew he would get back there soon.
All the records aside for those that never saw him play his greatness was measured in the respect given to him by opposing teams. You will never see him run a play in which he didn't give it 110%.....more than just a football player, a humble man and in so many ways a real American hero. He wasn't only admired he was loved and still is to this day.

Payton’s running style is so different, low knees and kicks his feet out, it’s amazing me on how fast he was. I was lucky enough to see him play live, thanks for the memories Mr.Payton. RIP
Correction , Payton was not fast , that was really the only part of his game he lacked
The kick was an attempt to juke , he did more of that the older and slower he got .
His jumping into the end zone was because he was to small to bull his way .
He was not the best pure running back , though probably the best all around running back .

Die hard bears fan here and Barry Sanders was the best pure runner I ever seen but Walter was the best football player ever. He could run, BLOCK, pass, kick, catch, return punts if needed, and was a leader as well!

Barry isn't in the top. Walter Payton and Jim Brown are at the top, PERIOD. Barry lost yardage very often trying to hit the big play every time and shying away from contact. I'd take marshal faulk or ladanian tomlinson over barry.

Back around 1995 a salesman walks in the shop and he is wearing a Bears hat with a Walter Payton signature on it. This happened in California's east bay area. I say "nice hat" he says he was just eating lunch wearing the hat and in walks Walter Payton! Who then signs the hat. How cool is that!

I have a buddy who was treated to Pro Bowl tickets because he was in the Navy at the time. After the game, all the players were heading to the bus, and many of the navy guys were hanging out trying to meet them and get autographs and stuff. My friend said that they were pretty much getting ignored by all of the players going into the bus. Then Walter Peyton went inside the bus, closed the door, and started yelling at all of the players about how they ignored their fans, especially the Navy guys who protect the country. He told everyone to get off the bus and meet and greet the fans now! And they did.

This is why he's the greatest... whatever situation he had to deal with in that era regards to game stats,player stats and team stats which were stacked against his team..he delivered... his highlights and stats speak for themselves..no other player had that much odds stacked against them than Payton, even in today's era no comparison..his legacy will always be remembered.. Agreed! I like the other vid I posted of his younger years too (1975-1979). As you mentioned, he was incredible. So versatile. Quite the athlete. I watched all of his games when I was a kid and marveled at his excellence. You know talent when you see it! He could do it all!

Jim Brown was great but he wasn't a great blocker and he definitely couldn't catch or throw the ball. Walter was only 5'10, and 205 pounds and did everything and only missed one game in his career.
People never talk about his durability, so many excellent running backs just dont last long enough to be legends. This dude, had the roughest work regiment and worked harder than anyone. Sweetness will forever be my #1 HB of all time.

Keep in mind, I already knew all this. I just did a simple search knowing the internet would provide, and BOOM goes the dynamite! I would have taken at least 10 backs before Sanders. Again, I'm not saying he wasn't great. I'm just saying he wouldn't start on my team. Barry was a negative yard machine!

I know what you are talking about.... especially the local news broadcasters that were making fun of him! They didn't know about his personal health struggles. So sad. I met him in the mid 90's and he was so funny! He was making fun and told my friend his fly was down.... it wasn't! He laughed and walked away. Haha

Walter Payton was everything that we wanted out of a football player-he can run, pass, and block. He was Sweetness!!! He is still considered one of the greatest running backs in the NFL to ever play the running back position. A lot of running backs wanna be him, but there will never be another Walter Payton ever again.
I don't even watch football but I can't stop watching this. What I see is a man in love with what he's doing. It's like watching a moving work of art. I get the same feelings watching this as I do watching a ballet, or when I behold the statue of David in all of its silent majesty.

He could do it all and make it look effortless. Could slip past defenders like a ghost, or run through them like Earl Campbell. Great hands and balance, and the durability of an anvil year after year. Dude is probably THE textbook definition of an NFL RB.
McMad would argue coach D all season that he knew the right play to call at times but did not call plays for Walter Payton to get a touchdown in the super bowl is just mind blowing to this day for me. R I.P. GREATNESS!

I love how he acts after scoring a touchdown -- like someone who has been there before. It seems like players now spend more time developing their touchdown show than learning the playbook. I'm okay with that, and don't have a problem with touchdown theatrics -- I just think the way Walter did it was just way more cooler.

I remember watching the 1999 press conference when he announced that he had a rare form of cancer, and that he wasn't expecting to live much longer. It was a shock.

One of the things that made him Special was how many times he had the first down and could have ran out of bounce yet kept fighting for More yards .

My fav runs of his were when it was looking like he was gonna lose like maybe three yards, but he'd put his head down and dive forward for no gain, no loss. He always seemed to get just a little bit more right at the ends of runs.
Tar ico. Agree. He played on some pretty bad teams early. How many times did be get hit in the backfield and turn it into a 3 yard gain? Thats where a bunch of his yards came from.

The greatest running back ever, he could run the ball he could catch the ball he could throw the ball, he was a devastating blocker and in college he kicked field goals for Jackson State. Walter Payton is the GOAT 🐐 May he RIP Sweatness..

His running skills were 2nd to none, agile and strong, but what I loved most about Walter Payton was not just his ability to block, but the passion and enjoyment he seemed to get out of making holes for other people.
Paton verifiably earned every single yard that he ever gained, while demanding some form of immediate payment from all opponents that got in the way - my all time favorite running back.
He is the reason i never spiked the ball after a touchown. My approach because of him was"act like you've been there before"

Grew up watching this man. He was something else. I think he was the back up punter and the quarterback for a number of years. I remember him playing qb a couple times.
He is as back up QB one season when McMahon was particularly injury prone (most seasons really) he once punted (39 yds which is solid), has 8 TD passes + 1 in the playoffs, 331 yds passing, is the first RB since the NFL-NFL merger to have a rushing, receiving and passing TD in the same game.
David Patten (2001) and Ladanian Tomlinson (2005) are the only others to do so.
Walter Payton was simply the greatest RB in NFL history that's just my opinion and I'm sticking to it. If I could pick an all time team from past and present players, Payton would be the first player I would have. Go Hawks

This is why even though Barry Sanders has more Yards, Eric Dickerson has the single-season record, and Emit Smith has the most Touchdowns. Walter was greater than all of them, Walter Payton one game lined up and played freaking Quarterback. I am more impressed with him than I will ever be of any damned Quarterback because everything he did on the field involved a mouth full of blood for somebody. He played when the game was unashamedly violent. I loved that old school NFL highlights "Man Music."
Sweetness carried the BEARS for every season leading up to the SUPER BOWL when they won and DITKA forgot to give the BALL for an easy TD but instead kept letting the FRIG TAKE IT IN! DITKA I think said he forgot or something like that but there was no excuse for that at all! The greatest EVER is WALTER PAYTON! RIP SWEETNESS as you are still missed!

Payton carried the ball 9 times inside the 10-yard line but failed to score in the super bowl. Yes, Ditka should have kept giving it to him. I wish he did.

He pranked my co-worker that his fly was down. It wasn't. He laughed and walked away. I will never forget it.
