Doug Howlett, what a bloody legend, I saw him playing against a South African super team one time, he copped a really dirty cheap shot over the sideline, it hurt him quite bad and sent him into a rage, the guy who did it got utterly smashed in 2 ferocious tackles within a few minutes of each other, it was the best retribution on a rugby field I've ever seen. What a fantastic guy and a fantastic player, easily in the top 3 wingers of all time!
Blistering sprint speed, a true cutting edge in attack, and a rock in defence. His try scoring record at elite level speaks for itself; there is no dancing around that fact.
one late afternoon after school outside my house i saw him running up towards Richardson rd roundabout in roskill south i yelled to my dad and brother 'hey its doug howlett' he turned waved and smiled and kept running up towards the roundabout never thought id see a rugby legend running pass my house lol great memory.
Yeah bro wen I went waikowhai intermediate we saw him jogging on Richardson rd while we were on our bus all us kids were screaming out to him he waved and smiled at us still remember it like it was yesterday... Roskill love 💯
Played at a time when the All Blacks looked to get the ball to its wingers (Joe Rokocoko the other) as often as possible. Doug also looked for work too! In the 2003 World cup game v Wales he scored a try on the right wing, scored another taking the ball 'off wing', was an emergency scrum half at a ruck, was 1st receiver and 2nd receiver from set piece moves and was acting full back on occasions too!!
@@clarkm4200 Would have been awesome to see him in action live, and the other phenomenal players like Umaga, Mils, Richie, Joe, Jonah, Carlos, etc etc.... too many to mention.
The rugby world has and is truly blessed with many outstanding athletes, New Zealand’s own Doug Howlett, is one of. Without over exaggerating, Howlett was in my opinion, a near complete rugby player that thrilled the many fans with great moments of play. His great support play, game foresight, and speed earned him, his team mates and his many followers, wonderful passages of play which led to many well deserved tries. Thank you Doug Howlett for the sweet memories, and thank you Real Rugby, for sharing.
I know this is a Howlett video, but how great was Marty Holah, seriously?! One of the first modern flankers, very underrated, could do anything... It was good seeing him in some of the early clips!
thomas corbet used to work with him at Foodtown Chartwell when we were younger, late 90s.. Quite type. Just does his job without any pissing around. Didn't realize who he was till I saw him with the *Mighty Chiefs* lol
My favourite winger of all time! One of my favourite memories was when he got into abit of a scuffle with a player from the lions team in the super rugby comp and howlett smashed him twice!
Yo..I nearly forgot just how mean that dude was..but I remember watching all those games haha. I'm sure he dont get enough props..faaark he was fast..but some of the lines he was running was magnificent. Dont hold what he done when he went to Munster against him. Respect to a legend.
What a player in an amazing team , so many super stars in this ABs team. Howlett, angles and speed made him such a weapon. One of the all time legends of the ABs
Great Stars in this game, I still remember that game when we lost to France in the Semi Final , for some reason Doug Howlet didn't play in that game ?? But i remember he smashed a few cars afterwards
Log Chop Productions yeah man some strange selections at the time. Howlett was dropped for Sivivatu and Mauger was dropped for McAlister. We played Muliaina at Centre as well. Carter hobbling off injured and his replacement Nick Evans pulling his hamstring just after he came on definitely didn't help. I'm sure they would have picked a different team if they had their time again. We forget how good Howlett was, this video is an awesome reminder.
Hi guys! I know I'm takin risks here ... I'm French ... and I lived Down Under!!! I'm your man if you're up for some fierce hostilities! LOL! Never mind! Great videos, down right about Doug's qualities but I'm more amazed about the sheer talents surrounding him, all these actions prepared prior to his finishing, for which he was bloody brilliant: the Wilsons , Merhtens, Umaga (sheer class these three) Spencers, Maugers, Carter at 13:15 (Oh!!!!!!!!) ... just the general building up of the actions and how Doug would fit in perfectly at the right time, right moment, like all his peers. Umaga was a beast! He had such a good overall view on the field and the current game state, punched holes into the opponent's defensive lines, had tiger alike reflexes and made clean passes, as we can see at 7:17. The skill involved there is extremely underappreciated. And he looked like a predator when he was leading the haka.

it is harder than you think to always be on the right line with speed and a clear offloading lane between you, sure tana umaga made some incredible breaks, it still required someone as precise and smart as doug howlett was to finish them. he is truly one of the best finishers in world rugby
My mannnn, Doug always a fast kid back to our school days at May Rd primary school and Mt roskill Intermediate, probably I was the only one close to him lol... even more faster when he went to Auckland Grammar..Nikki minutes.. Auckland, blue, all blacks....
Hahaha man, funny watching Howlett SMOKE the Irish a couple of times. I have to say they've improved a hell of a lot as back in the day the Irish were total carthorses - unfit, slow and with journeyman physiques.
One of the greats. If only he hadn't passed to Mils in the 2003 SF - I'd love to see him scoring that try in this footage. Unselfish play was the ethos though.
