To become, in a few short years, so well respected and appreciated on opposite sides of the world at the same time is an amazing achievement. Players come and go through clubs, regions and provinces but he became a Munster man and the supporters are proud to have had him in their team.
South African here, from Rustenburg, now living in New Zealand, the irony. Doug, sorry not sorry for what happens to visiting teams. It's war my friend, but after the game we can be mates. Cheers to a Legend!
Never actually heard Howlett speak in all the years of watching him in the Blues / All Blacks! lol. He sounds like a great thinker of the game. He’d be great on the after-dinner circuit. My favourite memory of him is the 2003 Super Rugby final. We were right up the back in the old Eden Park terraces; standing room only; nobody was sitting. The whole place went bonkers when he scored right in front of us but I remember yelling at him to put the bloody ball down as he looked like he was going to run right over the dead ball line! I was at uni at the time shit it was a great night. Awesome player. Good times!
Great to see this living legend looking so healthy and full of zest! To be honest he doesn't look much older from when joined Munster(apart from the hairstyle)! One of the games real gentlemen! Humble, honest and sincere............
Loved your game growing up. Seeing you guys at Munster doing the Haka back to the All Blacks is one of the greatest moments in rugby history. Massive respect!
He is prob more loved in Ireland than NZ and that's no disrespect to NZ , just shows the impact he had at Munster ...What a legend, so humble like 99% of NZ players
The kind of flashy player he was with the magic shoes, I actually expected Dougie Howlett to be arrogant. It's heartening to see how humble and likeable he is. Much respect from SA - you were always awesome to watch
Dougie still holds the trying scoring for the All Blacks - because he was a genuine try scoring winger! Speed to burn and he only had eyes on the try line and finishing! It was an awesome sight watching Dougie sprinting for the try line. There will only be one Doug Howlett!
My favourite All Black of all time!!! Born in 1983 and grew up watching with the family but Dougy was the man during my teenage years!! It seemed every game he scored a try and his speed was up there with Jason Robinson and Habana!! An NZ Sprint champ!! Everyone liked this guy!! Especially the lady's🙄 including my girlfriend at the time 🙄😂 I wish he stayed around for our home World Cup in 2011🤦♂️ because he wasted alot of years playing awesome Rugby in the North!! but he became a Munster great and made alot of money so I should shut up😂🤐 anyway here's my greatest ABs team 💪🖤🤙 1. This man had what it took to become an All Black and New Zealand sporting legend. Plenty of wings and full-backs have followed in his wake, yet none have broken his try-scoring count. That feat alone tells of the quality of the men working hard inside him ; providing quality ball and the space for him to utilise his great speed. Without them, no wing or full-back really shines.
" What An Honour It Is To See Two Legend's Of All Black Rugby On All Things About Their Illustrious Career! " I had a friend who was asked if he was Dougie Howlett, it inspired him to become an All Black but unfortunately his rugby career was over when he died in a car accident at the age of 19.
Class act the footage of him and o'connell in Chicago for the ab v ire game was great . Great he enjoyed his 12 year in ireland i wonder have the kids got bit of an irish twang in the accent haha
Absolutely! I think the previous couple of years Sivivatu had nosed ahead of him but that 2007 season he was dynamic! Unbelievable that he never got the big games that year, especially as both Sivivatu and Rokocoko were not particularly sharp that season. I can understand why he went on the car smash rampage.
I was a kid and sat next to Dougie's mom (with my mom) for his first game for Auckland. Once his mom said that that was her son playing his first game he instantly became my favorite player as a kid lol

They chop and change wingers too frequently, imo. - But if a sufficiently talented young guy can get in there and lock down the position for about half a decade, maybe. Julian came agonizingly close and you can argue if Rieko never fell out of favor, he would've probably been closing in on 40 test tries by now. - Beauden is also only 14 test tries away, so perhaps he's the chosen one.
Great to see Dougie again. Humble, intelligent, and respectful gentleman.
I will never forget Douggie leading the Haka for Munster against the All Blacks. Mana hard.
Rua led it
One of my favorite wingers of all time. A Legend in the game.

That was a great listen and nice to see Doug Howlet again. This is from a Leinster fan. He put 100% into that red jersey, to our detriment 😮❤
An absolute legend Dougie🤙🤙 appreciate the career mate🙌 I got u a very close 2nd to Jonah and followed by Rokocoko in my opinion 🤙🤙yeah
Great interview, Marshall another brilliant rugby player...

Intelligent man, it’s refreshing to hear a rugby person articulate the questions well.
It's that Tongan intellectual awareness.
Great to see this living legend looking so healthy and full of zest! To be honest he doesn't look much older from when joined Munster(apart from the hairstyle)! One of the games real gentlemen! Humble, honest and sincere............
PS. The reason he scored 49 tries in the jersey was down to the fact he was the best in the world, in his position!
Loved your game growing up. Seeing you guys at Munster doing the Haka back to the All Blacks is one of the greatest moments in rugby history. Massive respect!
What a gentleman, hugely respectful and he typifies why we admire and respect AB rugby. Bok supporter
He's in my best ever ABs XV with Cullen at Fullback
He represents both Tonga and NZ well 🇹🇴 MMT 🔥
The Munster Haka was one of the best things I've ever seen in Rugby.
Enjoy that thanks Mashy, what a legend Dougie great memories of your career
Huge respect to Dougie! Miss those days when he was playing
He's half Irish to us. What a legend and gentleman.
Hehehehe love it
Nice mate 🖒
Awesome Doug you are a true legend
Absolute legend! Haven't forgotten that try you scored when you burnt off Jason Robinson from England 👏💯
Brilliant finisher "The wolf" Doug Howlett! 👊🏽💪🏾✊🏾
Great interview Marshie! Legendary Dougie. Rugby is more than a game - it moulds and produces men!
A legend of the game👍
Ex-players still say he was just too fast and furious with his raw pace plus angle lines.
Decent bloke of the pitch too.
Try scoring machine, was Doug Howlett, awesome interview Justin Marshall.

The man! Howlett Joe Rock and Mils. What a back 3.
lomu, wilson and cullen... no idea how the all blacks produce such quality
Lomu Wilson Cullen for me
Add Rupeni with that 3 in the Blues backline unstoppable
@@williamnathan2032 How did I forget that legend!
Like Eddie Jones said "They've got the 3 best academies: Tonga, Samoa and Fiji 💯🤣
I miss the Doug Howlet rugby era!!
Two great legends...loved watching the north vs south rivalry...got whooped everytime but it's worth every single moment...loved the curls way back...

Best player in 2007 by a country mile.... Should of played the world cup quarter final against France but didn't. Crazy.....
We would have won that game and the cup if he was selected in that game.

Anyone else thing Doug Howlett looks like Rufus Sewell?
He looks so friendly as oppose to his playing days :D
His record still stands
Nice one Dougie.. legend of the blues
Humble. Welcome home Dougie.
Absolute legend
As a Staffa I loved watching this guy … except when we lost lol but he was awesome !!
I was a kid and sat next to Dougie's mom (with my mom) for his first game for Auckland. Once his mom said that that was her son playing his first game he instantly became my favorite player as a kid lol

great to see a champ
All time great and a great person 👍
Is dougie part of a commentary team? If not he needs to be.

Can't believe the Highlanders let him go. Dougie probably asked 'What can you offer me?' and they would've said 'A cup of tea.'
