Xaveric, to say a movie has one singular "point" is kind of missing it. Movies are best when no one character is perfect, and Falling Down is a great example of that. Even Pendergrast, the morally upstanding veteran cop, clearly made mistakes in his life, marrying his chubby wife, retiring from a job he loves, and moving to a shithole in Arizona for her for example. D-Fens is certainly not without his flaws, no one is. But a simple fact of movies is that different people will watch the same movie and identify most with different characters.
@@talbertobarbossa75 Prendergast actually decides not to retire because of the encounter with bill foster. This is revealed when he talks to adele and says my name is mud... (Adele)Na uh... Well it will be when my wife finds out I'm still a cop.

It's no joke, a quick ball or stone to the head is a lot like a bullet; not quite, but it's just as devastating. That's why warriors thousands of years ago used slings with stones.
you can see at the end when he asked if he was sorry that he didn't let him through, you can hear the old man say ''my golf course''. so even when he was dying, the old man didn't apologize to him, good riddance.
I wouldn't waste my dying words apologizing to the psychopath who was basically the cause of my death, even if I did try to kill him first. The old man didn't know it, but Michael Douglas's character DID deserve to die! Not only was he trespassing, he was trespassing while in the middle of a murderous rampage. Regardless, he was right about one thing: it WAS his golf course.
@@bridgettebianchi9315 I understand that the movie is supposed to be about a crazy world, which is a big part of why I find the movie so deplorable, but to say that the main character is acting in a "sane" way is just ridiculous. Did he not do this in the film, and do you regard that as sane?
The whole notion IT MATTERS if every player simply played at their own speed...acres vs a tiny little ball, who cares who's on a hole? We live in abundance but people act as if we are all starving to death. gee wonder where that one comes from? oh yes the profiteers again.

Extremely under rated movie. Excellent in every aspect. In the theater I watched the audience go from laughing and cheering what he was doing to being completely silent as he went too far.
It was definitely disturbing the way he was coming after his ex wife and kid. High strung, angry, obsessive and stalker-ish, with a complete lack of self awareness to be able to see himself objectively, and why he scared them. O.o And no regard for how they may have felt. Anyone notice how this scene is an exact reflection of the Mexicans earlier in the film? Race, class and wealth seperate them yet theyre still one in the same. Both use violence to claim land on top of a hill as theirs. Both threatened by a man who did nothing to provoke them and unwilling to share or listen to reason. This movie has so many metaphors and statements on society, its hard to believe its the same guy who made fucking Batman and Robin!

@@stevekaczynski3793 They both threatened his life. It may be argued that the golfers were actually more likely to kill him given the Mexicans seemed to be posturing more than anything or they would have stabbed him when he was making some grandiose speech. The golfers actually aimed the ball in his direction with enough force to legitimately kill him before they even had a chance to exchange greetings. Though the Mexicans return to make an actual attempt as well later on. So both were equally likely to kill him in their attempts.

It's funny how you see the old golfing partner as, if I understand you correctly, an innocent victim, yet you point only to his friend who "picked a fight" as the evil one who caused his troubles. Meanwhile there was a man carrying a sawed off shotgun deliberately across a private golf course just waiting for someone to give him an excuse to pull it out, who is the man that actually threatened to shoot him and his friend, and deprived him of his life saving medicine, about whom you apparently had nothing bad to say. @Matt S I agree. OP called them selfish, but hes given the wrong reason. When he said 'there should be families pickinicking, he was just making a point at how land is wasted. They were selfish, because they were bothered by a guy passing through. Almost nothing.
@Matt S if my small garden is the ONLY route to an important place and you are urgent in my presence, I'd let you pass. Also, do you REALLY think that my small 2x5 metre area garden is comparable to 10,000 square metres of land for golfing?
The entire movie has a studied ambiguity. The characters he encounters always bring about their own downfall. He is just the occasion for it. And in the end he is shot for pulling a water gun. Who is falling down? Is it he? Or is it the society he lives in? Notice that detective Prendergast has learned something from all of this. He will no longer put up with his wife's antics and demands his dinner be ready when he gets home. And the home video at the end: A man losing mildly losing his temper...
That's where I imagine the theater wasn't laughing much anymore.
