  • In this video, I discuss the personality traits that are essential for successfully completing a PhD. Overall, these personality traits can be grouped into three categories:
    1. Openness to criticism, Resilience, and Adaptability
    2. Courage and Independence of Thought
    3. Selfishness and Street-Smartness
    This video is part of a TH-cam playlist where I give various general advice to students at different levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD):

    Thank you so much Professor. Currently I am pursuing my PhD from IIT. I have returned to academia after a long gap. Earlier while doing my MPhil, I had given up mid-way. I was in the batch 2014-16 but couldn't submit the dissertation even after completing almost 75% of the work. I went on for job, did job for more than 5 years and in between I re-registered by the end of 2017 and submitted in mid 2018. I can relate to your words. I have joined PhD in the spring semester of 2021 and I hope I will be focused and will be able to do a good research work. Your guidance is something I admire a lot.

    9:00 Usually the PhD students have the virtue of helping others, they are kind ---> but too much of this virtue creates a constant desire to please everybody
    *Solution--> Follow the Golden Mean between selflessness and selfishness,*: Bring little selfishness i.e. select a few from everybody, and only help others when your own work is complete, try to convert informal work to formal work.

      Thank you Madam once again for watching and appreciating the video. And I am glad you liked the visuals. But I wonder if perhaps they are bit outdated for this generation of students! These are the actual parameters that makes research different and unique from other things. You have to work on so many aspects (academically and non-academically) at the same time which can really check your mental perseverance. Thats why in order to stay cool and self focused it is very important that we focus on these things- health(both physical and mental), emotional intelligence, spirituality.

    I would say that constructive criticism from the supervisor is the best boost in one's research career. However, there is a thin line between arrogance and goodwill. A supervisor must be open to debates on their comments. If a student doesn't feel that a few comments are worth following, the supervisor must be able to convince them that they are wrong. Unfortunately, many supervisors presume debates to be threats to their authority and wish that the student follows them to the letter. This culls creativity, which is another necessary trait for being a good researcher.

    Hi JC, fellow teacher here. I enjoy your videos and direct students towards them for the great advice. All the qualities you mention are really important for PhD students. However, the examples in this video are perhaps a little bit more relevant for the top students who have good advisers.
    The typical PhD students face a range of challenges like indifferent or incompetent adviser, frustration at the lack of papers, pressure to complete/ get postdoc, disenchantment with research and the subject itself, high level of isolation, high degree of stress and so on. I think it might help students a lot if you could talk about some of these in your upcoming videos.

      Thank you for your kind comment. You have raised an important issue. However, as you may guess, my own experience has been on the extremely positive side. And, the friends I had during my PhD days mostly had such positive experiences. I did hear about negative cases but they were very rare. Since I don't have the first hand knowledge about that (fortunately!), I don't think it would be okay for me to give advice on such matters.

    Life has so much to teach us. It will make the arrogant humble.
    PhD is one such lesson of life. The purpose of life is to learn, unlearn, learn and grow. I imagine how good it would be if we could carry forward all these life experience into another life... 😃 But it would not be good for the balance in nature. Nature will not allow it. Anyway enough of the philosophy. 😀

    Feedback and (constructive) criticism is so important, it's a bit diffcult for me understand how studients struggle with it so much. I have a supervisor who has never provided any significant guidance at all and i gradually lost all interest in the work. All of the research work that has been published under his name (as last author) is infact the independent and unsupervised work of his research scholars, who have some how managed to scrape through. I personally don't know how i will make it. I have been grateful for any criticism of my work from any professor in my subject area. It has all helped me so much even though it's few and far between. I have had to personally seek out feedback. And i make sure to tell them i am open hearing anything including some harsh words. But then again, they have limited time and they're not my supervisors so i am not comfortable bothering them too much.

    Another personality trait is so central for PhD students that it deserves another video... INTEGRITY AND ETHICAL VALUES (or more aptly, the LACK OF Integrity, and APATHY towards ethical values !!!!!!)... Unfortunately in many universities in India, a PhD is often undertaken solely for the purpose of compliance, to fulfill the requirements of education regulators like UGC or AICTE.... Those who undertake and complete a PhD with this mindset go on to become Faculty, and perpetuate the same mindset in their PhD students... The only preoccupation of such Faculty/ Supervisors is not to get caught by plagiarism software (there are other software which help in this !!!!!!) and to get the minimum required number of publications any which way, to show a pretense of research !!!... This is a different kind of "Selfishness" !!!... The young PhD student knows that this is not the right attitude, but as everyone is going through the motions of a PhD, he/ she follows the herd. 🐑🐑🐑

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thankfully I never had to face this situation at IIT Kharagpur. So it never came to my mind! Primarily, because it is something of a given. If a video were to be made on how to become rich, surely it would not be necessary to say "Don't steal!" On a more serious note, I completely agree with you that such kinds of "PhDs" are going on ... it is extremely unfortunate and a black mark on our profession. I think the best advice I would give to young students thinking of going for a PhD is be very careful against joining such institutes where there is this kind of culture. I know there is a lot of subtlety involved and just making such sweeping remarks is not going to change anything. But to address this problem, we have to strike at the root of the problem in terms of how the system works ... just asking young students to inculcate integrity and ethical values will hardly make a dent.

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for consistently watching my videos! You have broached an important issue: productivity! In fact, if you just search around on the internet, you will realize that there is an entire industry (books, software, hardware, gadgets and what not) built up around it. And, there is no dearth of "gurus". I think if you go through these you will slowly begin to realize that none of the advice given by others will exactly fit yours. You will get some good ideas from others but ultimately you will have to build a system which is your own ... most importantly it must be something that is in sync with your personality style and your mental speed, your own level of laziness (we will have that!). You could take a look at the books and blog posts of Cal Newport. He himself is an exemplar of productivity (he is a professor in CS, writes non-CS books, does podcasts, and a bunch of other things in addition to having a proper family life).

    Very well organized and fluent explanation Sir! I want your much needed advice on following
    I am in my 2nd sem of Mtech(online) and the major barrier i am facing is the Reading part. Reading everything from a computer screen is actually putting lot of strain on my eyes since I am passionate about reading research papers and articles. So is this how mtech and phd is going to be? If so, I am thinking of taking a break after my Mtech before starting Phd. Will this gap hamper my research profile?
    I did ask this to my profs. but want your POV. Apology for incovenience of reading this big para.

      Thank you. All of us are suffering from eye strain especially with everything online during this pandemic. During PhD if we can finally get back to a normal physical lab routine, then you can get papers printed out for reading. If possible, try to avoid taking a break. It can sometimes hamper the pace and focus.

But I think a major reason behind what I was able to achieve was the culture of paper writing that Prof. Suman Chakraborty fostered in his research group. I carried a bit of that culture to my postdoc also.

If anything is given for correction my supervisor won't do it . And say that just send the paper or abstract. Grateful to you, Prof. However, don't you think being selfish makes the atmosphere of the lab toxic just like in corporate world. Instead, we may help our juniors by just giving them hints and let them do things by themselves.

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Giving hints and tips as part of daily interactions is not just fine but a part of a healthy lab culture. What I mentioned in the video was that sometimes, some students take it upon themselves to write the code or run the simulation just because they are more capable ... and then more students approach them which ultimately hampers the student's own work. In order to avoid such a situation, a healthy dose of "selfishness" is required. People need to learn how to say "no" in a polite way.

    I’m in agreement with most of what’s said but selfishness is not the correct term to use. Being able to say no in order to have down time or recreational time or time to do dissertation research is not being selfish. Doing research and writing a dissertation is a team sport requiring support from many at the university, the committee, family friends, colleagues, etc. no one can go it alone everyone needs help at some point. It’s all about time management. To label time management as selfishness is just ignorant click bait.

    • @Prof_JC
      @Prof_JC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comment. This video is part of a series targeted primarily at the student community in India. I did my own PhD in India and I am currently also a faculty member in India. I am guessing you are from the US. So there is something of a cultural gap in the interpretation of how I used "selfish".
      I have known supervisors having to tell their own students to be a bit more selfish for their own sake. There is a subtlety here that goes beyond time management, and to properly understand that one would have to grow up in this cultural setting.
      Furthermore, the point I made at the end regarding converting an informal help to a formal collaboration and to ensure getting proper credit by being included in the author list is something which many students never think about. And, it was something which was taught to me by my own supervisor. And this again goes beyond time management.
      Even in a non-academic setting, what passes off as self-care and me-time in the West, can often get labelled as selfish here in India.
      I think it is rather unfortunate that you felt necessary to term something as "ignorant click bait". You could have just asked why I am using the word "selfish".
      I know it can be difficult for people to view the world through anything other than the lens of the cultural setting that they were brought up in. But I hope I was able to explain the situation.
