Sir I myself am a PhD CSE student at one of the old IITs and the work culture is not at all good here. I think the direct PhD selection process should be rigourous and looks like it isn't. I joined in Jan 2020 right before COVID which was in March 2020 for 2 years we were at home during COVID and currently in my fourth year now and I have no papers. I think there is a lot of insensitivity among a few Professors who ask for unrealistic goals like publishing 5-6 papers(when they just published 2 papers in 7 years of their PhD) to graduate from here. There is no placement support for PhD as well, I don't think there is any point of going with this process coz there is no support when it comes to finances and support as a Phd student for your thesis from Professor's side coz of their incapability. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FUTURE ASPIRANTS: I would request every student please do Mtech before PhD or else do direct PhD only if you have a bit of research experience coz it's uncertain and one with financial issues needs certainty when it comes to work. Also, if your financial condition isn't good better not to join PhD coz it's risky and as a senior I can tell you this coz of what I am going through. There was nobody to guide me when I was applying and abt to join this as I'm the first one in my family to enter IIT but my dear sisters and brothers please take wise decision. My financial condition isn't good at all and reality of getting an Mtech if you are unable to do direct PhD here is myth. College won't allow you to leave easily especially your advisors, I heard one story(just one in four years) where student literally fought for MTech and this is the condition. You'll suffer very badly and eventually you'll be on your own once your stipend ends. So please think before leaving what you are doing right now before joining PhD/direct PhD especially in India.

I support the good cause raised by vijendra sir. the academic fraternity needs to realise that they are failing in creating an environment which promotes research and development and in turn, is hindering the country's growth. I do not understand the logic in giving more weightage to mtech than phd in assessing a candidate for a prospective job role. i mean this is a very serious issue that the system is discouraging the students to pursue phd. no country who claims to be an upcoming global leader can reach where it wants to reach by doing what is being done here. i guess we dont want to dissociate our country from the tag of snake charmer. service sector is only one engine of our economy. for the indian economy rocket to take off, we need all of its engines fired simultaneously. more research creates more sectoral expertise and in turn create industries relying on those low cost home grown expertise. in short the quality of research directly relates to the standard of living of the country. because everything boils down whether it is affordable or not. media should take note of it and try to make sense out it and ask questions to relevant authorities.
