    So, I'm a beekeeper and telling your bees when a family member has died is an old practice. It's not exclusive to the Royals at all. You are expected to tell the bees of any major life events in the family especially births and deaths. The practice goes back centuries.

    • @stevenclark1662
      @stevenclark1662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      You've caught my interest.
      Why is it a thing?
      Is it the thinking that it treats them as part of the family, so they'll work harder to make better/more honey, or is it a mystical type of thong?

    • @stevenclark1662
      @stevenclark1662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Got autocorrected.
      Though I'd be curious to see a mystical thong as well.

      @@stevenclark1662 I believe they thought that if the bees weren't properly informed that all hell would break loose in the colonies. The bees wouldn't produce honey, they would die, or they would leave. Some of the rituals involve knocking on the hive three times to get their attention and informing them of the event. Some have it where you inform the bees at midnight, while other traditions actually drape the bee hive in black so they can take part in the mourning process. There are lots of variations on the origins of the practice as it's truly not known.

    Informing the bees isn't a UK or royal tradition. It's a beekeeping tradition, if their caretaker dies. The idea is that the beekeeper not showing up to care for them might make the bees abandon the hive, so there has to be an explanation for his/her absence.

    As a beekeeper myself, Yeah telling bees is a long tradition started in Europe but it’s been traditionally done all over the world. It’s said that you must tell your hives if someone from the family has died or of new birth and major life changes so they wouldn’t unexpectedly die, swarm entirely, or get disease. I didn’t know the Queen had bees. That’s cool.

    The bit about King Charles’ inheritance being tax free is a bit misleading as he doesn’t own it really. It’s referring to the crown estate which is bestowed to a reigning monarch but is not the private property of the monarch. It’s weird but that’s what you get with a thousand year old constitutional monarchy haha.
    Also, roughly 75% of the profits from the crown estate go straight to the government (and effectively to the British people) and the monarch gets the remaining 25%. It’s called the sovereign grant and is largely how the monarchy actually funds itself

Instead he has hopped around the UK like a flea in a hotplate and not made three different rituals out of the regnal/governmental bit. instead of staying at Balmoral and allowing some dignitaries to come and express condolences in a conventional way, he also zipped back up from London to do a nine minute “vigil” and then inserted himself into the Scottish parliament at the Presiding Officer’s desk (the place of authority) to “receive condolences”: for which there is no precedent whatever.

Even my mom, this is light. She was born with name Anika. (Out of 14 kids.. Grandpa was a horndog) The catholic church made every uncle and aunt, and mom. Englishsize their name. They changed one of her older sisters to Anne. So she became Fannie. I only learned about this at one of my uncles funerals where why is uncle Connie being called Constantine. I mean, I get it. But in truth who gives a poop about diamonds. A bunch of shiny glass. So hey, ask for your diamonds back. But this queen was literally a true symbol of what you need to be to be a good person, A symbol, not a ruler.

    Hey there Stephen; LOVE YOUR SHOW! LOVE YOUR HUMOUR! But as you can tell from the spelling of that word - I'm across the pond!
    So to clarify for all my beautiful American brothers and sisters:
    In the UK 'Inheritance Tax' is paid on the inheritance of properties and estates that are owned by an individual.
    The vast majority of the properties and estates that are identified as the late Queen's properties are not actually her property, but part of the 'Crown Estates' the entire revenue of which is paid over to the UK Government for the benefit of all, furthermore, the 'Inheritance Tax' in the UK goes to the 'Crown'. So it's a little bit ridiculous if all that tax ends up where it began!!!
    As for the income from the privately owned investment portfolios - King Charles (like his late mother before him) pays exactly the same tax rates as any other citizen of the UK.

    He may not pay inheritance tax, but he does give 75% (85% starting in 2027) of his yearly income from the Crown Estate to the British government (approximately $400 million each year)

      Crown estate is not his personal property. It's government property. It's like saying the govt won't pay taxes but will "return" some of the income from the pentagon or any other government building to the government. It's ridiculous. Crown property belongs to the government. They aren't doing anyone any favors. Question is, do they pay any taxes on personal property or wealth? They don't.

      @@adamazingballs no, no...she was actually a sentient being all said and done.
      If you're American, your education system being the way it is, I can see how you may have confused the two though
      If you're talking about the idea of an unelected head of state in a more general sense on the other hand...well, then you may have a point.
      That said, it's a tricky one for me at least in that the ones who rabidly insist that folk should vote them into power that they're supposed to be acting in somewhat of an advisory role towards have been universally agreed as being decidedly weak of mind, to say the least, of late.
      At least, the queen having years of experience of dealing with Prime Ministers and other foreign heads of state on the other hand, it may have been possible that having her there acting in that role may have been a good thing...that is of course if the folk she was entertaining cared to listen in the first place (them being Tory and the party of conservatism and tradition after all, you'd have hoped they would).
      With Charles coming in to replace the queen now though, I think it's very fair to say that both sides of the debate are very much an unknown quantity.
      Time will tell.

      @@jackharrison7613 We don't know how any previous monarch acted when getting covered in ink because 24h news and the plethora of good quality cameras weren't available. So we rely on the press reporting at the time, royal deference along with a sense of proportion would have meant that newspapers almost definitely wouldn't want to mention something like this.
      What we can do however is empathise and think how we would react. The man has just lost his mother, his every movement and decision (or sometimes not a decision but a tradition) is being scrutinised. His son and daughter-in-law are being absolutely dragged by the press because they don't seem to like her, and he has a new job that he can't get advice from another person doing the same role as the only person who knew it is under the royal standard in Westminster Hall.

    I am a big fan of Colbert -- but the scene with Charles seemed more sad than funny. When Colbert’s mother died he took time off and had his private time. Same with me and most people. Charles loses his mother and then has to perform nearly perfectly from the moment of her death and endure day after day of public spectacle, decision making, protocol and travel. How many of us can relate to having a hissy fit over something small when something large and troubling has happened? It might be funny at another moment. At this one, I’m inclined to sympathy and empathy.
