I agree! And I also want to emphasize the versatility of the design. While a lot of my other favorites had a Japanese theme (due to the matcha green tea tablets) this may make it difficult to expand and sell other teas from other countries. With this design it would be really easy and cool to have different people drawn in that same style in different colors for the other teas!
They all give off different brand identities to me Natalie's feels high-end that i would find in a department store Matt's feels like an long-established tea farm/maker Georgia's feels like a company that sells various items and this is their tea line Alice's feels like a health & wellness brand with a notable influencer/sponsor Deborah's feels like it would be in a collectors set (like bright cellars but tea) Pedro's feels like a specialty chain like a david's tea Personally I would go for Matt's for Pedro's if I were to see it in person~
I fell for Matt's. Gives me zen vibes. If I saw this at a supermarket, I would stop.stare and seriously consider buying it, for the beauty of its packaging.
Love 1, 2, and 5, but if I was to choose a favorite, it has to be 1. Personally I think the first one achieved the relaxing concept all three of the designs are aiming for without having to rely on it being coveyed through a landscape/scenery. The choice of color to match with the flavor of the tea (in which case was matcha) could be expanded further too with the inclusion of various flavors - we can use blue and a different illustration in the same style for butterfly pea tea for example. This way we could have an array of different colors and illustrations for various flavors while keeping the packaging and brand theme the same throughout (its easier to identify a brand with a character illustration than a scenic landscape).
Natalies design was so unique and different, something I wouldn't have even thought about, which definitely grabbed my attention!! Think all of the entries nailed the brief in their own way, and it's great to see how each designer interprets it too! Thanks so much for your feedback!!
Exact same thoughts! I find the first to be the best for my tastes because it captured the relaxing and luxury theme of the product, especially because of the designer's limited use of colors.
Natalie fkn knocked this oUT OF THE PARK. Everyone's was amazing, truly, but I would buy Natalie's to keep as decoration in my kitchen as well! Especially if it were in a tin canister
I like hearing your critiques, Abi. It shows your high-level eye for design, and it's always constructive too. You definitely bring a unique quality to the design education space on TH-cam, where unlike many others who talk about 'good' design but don't actually present a lot of it in their own work, you really highlight your strong abi-lity (had to do it) to interpret a brief. I would love to see a video where you shared the process of creating your own merch. As a fellow designer, I feel that designing for ourselves can be the most difficult due to the endless amount of creative possibilities that flood our minds when given free rein. Keep up the great work, it's been nice to see you grow as a content creator since discovering the channel.
Thank you so much, really appreciate this feedback! So fun to see how a brief can be interpreted by different designers and the outcome of this! Ooh love this idea, I’ll add it to the list! Thanks again😎
Debroh!! I would buy this in a heart beat! I'm also designing a website right now for a friend who is starting a tea company - this gave me great inspo :)
I really love Deborah's design. Although I wish that she had chosen more greenish colors (since its all about Matcha and "teal"). The blue makes the soft peachy orange stand out more, due to which Id automatically assume that its rather a peach-flavoured product.
1, 2, and 5 are my favourites. 1. Great use of art deco as an inspiration, especially the lettering. 2. I love the bold use gold and the pop of red. 3. Gorgeous use of gradation with blue going to orange. Clever ideas like the water from the kettle becoming a stream and the rising sun and setting moon. This one would probably look best from all angles. Final thoughts: They all succeed in conveying calm & tranquility. They're so aesthetically pleasing that I'd keep them after the tea was finished and use them as storage containers that I'd keep on display.
Matt's design stands out to me. If I have to buy one of them, I would pick it up. It matches the concept of tea matcha which is a traditional feature. In addition, his logo is simple and dynamic. All the designed tea packages are very impressive.
Wow! I absolutely loved how they all varied in the presentation as well, and took time to showcase the logo separately on a mockup or within a mood board. It's so inspiring to see the different takes on this challenge!
Matt's one stands out the most to me :) it's elegant and contemporary yet has a traditional-zen feel. there are elements of the product's origin in the design and the colour scheme is aesthetically pleasing. my next preference is Natalie, which appears more vintage and luxurious. i love the graphics and colour scheme, it really speaks _Teal_
for me the winner has to be natalie, absolutely superb design and i think she really nailed the brief, my runner up would be either deborah or pedro. just wanted to add that i submitted an entry, my design was the first of the little slideshow of designs before the video. seeing the designs here, can't be mad, still gotta keep improving haha.
Yeah Natalies and Deborahs illustrations are so so good! Thank you for enterting the comp, I really appreciate it! I will be reviewing some more of the designs in a video soon 😊
@@abiconnick ah, ty abi! love your work and always a pleasure to participate in these designs comps, always get to really explore and test my design skills.
I am graphic designer too and I liked the 4th one. As a costumer I first focus on what really remind me a green tea.."Green, nature, organic and fresh. 4th and 5th ones are more Green Tea to me. For 5th one I only change the color of the upper side. Not blue but maybe mint green.
to be completely honest the winner of this is Matt. I know you said that the birds should be taken away but that in on itself adds layers to the design and personality! A design with subtle layers will always create a deeper connection to it's clients and audience
The thing about this design challenge is that you can take the exact same product and depending on which package you put it in, it automatically increases or decreases the value. If I saw Natalie’s and Alice’s designs on the shelf and they were the exact same product inside and both priced at $29.99, I’m choosing Natalie’s. It feels luxurious, it screams art deco and the excess of the 1920s. Alice’s logo design was adorable but the design says $9.99..if that makes sense. Same with Matt’s though, his feels imported and fancy but not overly high-end so I could see his being priced at $19.99. It just goes to show how packaging is such a psychological subject and packaging design alone can add so much value to the product itself.
All of these are so amazing! For me personally, it's between Natalie and Matt. Absolutely nailed the simplicity and elegance. I specifically am a fan of what they each did with the type. The other designs are really great, but they were mostly too busy for a packaging design.
Such an amazing designs! I really like how everyone has their own creative flow and design decisions really make lots of sense... Great job for pointing and highlighting them Abi! Glad to see another video of yours
In my opinion, if Alice designed a better name, he deserves this award because his design is wonderful classy and consistent with the content of the product.
I love the second ones. I can feel all sorts of emotions and impression when i look at the design be it tranquility, tea ceremony, matcha origin, luxury, sitting at yhe foot of a mountain, tea drinks with friends or family and lastly, the zen. I don't feel these much on other designs tho but all designs are amazing! I agree with you about the birds. Although i don't want it to be removed i prefer if it's a bit bigger and less. By bigger i mean there's a perspective but not too big that it disturb the fonts. It's like the birds are heading to us as if welcoming us into their world. The position seems better to be a bit lower, not in the middle of the sun. Anyway, good job on creating such eye catching design ✨
Matt and Deborah! I feel like I would 100% buy the product if I saw it on a supermarket's shelf even if I am not such a big fan of matcha tea. Their designs are eye catching but still subtle, dreamy, modern and give the idea of premium quality. Their design would make me still keep the box a long time after finishing the tea inside. Nevertheless, amazing work by all designers!
I loved Deborah's so much! I would not even hesitate for a minute to buy it. From the minimal leaf in A of teal to the little heart at the back it looks so pretty!!
Great artwork on show here! Pedro is definitely my fave with georgia as a runner up as these are the only designs in my opinion that would actually be seen on a shop shelf. While the other entries are beautiful and show great artwork, with only a tiny logo on top there is nothing telling the consumer that this is a tea brand and it is not reflective of the layout of its biggest competitors. This is a branding competition and great artwork doesn’t always necessarily mean great brand.
I completely agree! The artwork is definitely beautiful and draws the eye of the consumer however it doesn’t work to base the entirety of a brand on some artwork. For example, if this brand wanted to expand into different flavours of tea, pedros could easily be edited by just changing the colours / shapes while the product would still be recognisable under the brand of teal. However, the artwork based brands would be very difficult to expand as new artwork could be created but how would consumers recognise that the different products are from the same brand with such little attention on the logo / brand assets. If you go into a store and look on the shelves the emphasis of product packaging is placed on a) the logo and b) information on what the product is. It should be clear at first glance what the product is to the consumer. For example, based on how these products are stocked on shelves, Natalies design would likely be stored backwards as the back contains the typical information that is seen on the front of most tea products. Therefore the beautiful artwork would not even be seen by customers and so the selling point of this packaging / brand has been lost and all of the work that Natalie put in would be pointless. Overall I think a lot of these were chosen because of how pretty or aesthetic they are but little attention has gone into the actual branding and hence these packaging designs would not work in a real life scenario.
I agree! If this was an artwork competition I get why these designs would be picked but as a branding competition I don’t think these designs should have ranked as high, as the branding is basically non existent. If I quote abi’s recent Instagram post on the secret sauce behind crafting a timeless brand, she states “strategy-led design that is structures around any future business plans”. In terms of the designs chosen, I think most of them lacked the strategy-led design and were instead more artwork-led. Although pretty to look at, this kind of branding does not work in the industry as when “teal” need to bring out new products they will need to rebrand as the packaging is not replicable for their new products. This wastes a lot of money and time and therefore is not great strategy-led branding and I think as a brand designer, a lot more emphasis should have been put on overall branding when judging the best designs.
Abi making these kind of videos gives us an opportunity to learn more get inspiration and your comments on the changes are really appreciable as they they give another level of insights into the already made designs. Hope to see more such videos and learn more ❤️
Hi Abi!! It would be great if you could do a vid on colors when it comes to printing. Especially 2 color, 4 color etc, things to consider when it comes to printing things, as it's a big part of the graphic designer role :/
Would combine: The graphic and green color of Natalie & the placement of information from Georgia with some of the nicer font designs like Matts, Alice or Deborahs. To add the golden brushstroke to it like Matt did could be a nice eye-catcher. If on the other side of the logo a nice quote would be placed, this would definetly be a box to keep and maybe with other designs also to collect. Although I prefer the vibe of Natalie with the complete design Matt did the best job.
The most elegant and sophisticated looking of the designs was the very first by Natalie. However, all six of the designs of the logo text "Teal" could have benefited from a bit more effort. In some instances they were too small on the package (Georgia) and in others too thin (Deborah) making them difficult to notice on a busy shelf or read at a glance. The last package design by Pedro was simply too busy to have a "fresh, elegant" tone.
Natalie and Deborah; They have stolen my heart, passionate about fine and elegant design. But it is true that Deborah connects me a little to the perfume and, perhaps it looks too elegant, but I understand that to communicate the premium of the product. I think Natalie got it 100%💚 ¡Saludos desde España!
I had a great time working on this design challenge. Although I was not chosen, I learned a lot! Hopefully, this type of challenge will be a regular thing in the future! 🎉🥂
I feel like ive seen the other designs before. Theyre a bit trendy looking. Natalie's illustration took it to another level. Its the most elegant for me plus points on the depth of research. Though i think all of the logos could be improved. Theyre not as strong as i would like + most of them are in thin weights which would be more difficult capturing in actual printing. Theyre all good but my bet is Natalie on this one.
First of all I would like to say thank you Abi because you are the first reason for all of this amazing design works and you are build the true designers community! To be honest When I see all of the designs I really heat my design beside that I rally like Matt design and he did it well. From this competition I learn a lot of things and I really exited for the up coming design challenge...
Aww appreciate the kindness!! Such a great community 🧡 Matt did an incredible job and definitely would be something I’d pick up! Glad this video has helped and I can’t wait for the next!!!
I was waiting for this for so long but i didnt got choosen but its okay i had so much fun designing teal and i will try better next time 💕 Apart from that these all people have done a great job i have voted for my favorite 💕
Don't be disheartened by it, I had over 500 people enter and all work was of high quality! Plenty more competitions coming in the future 😊 Thank you for your positivity!
Yes this is so good! I was honestly blown away but the high standard of every design, I can't give anything away but I will say the voting in very very close between the top 3!
They're all well done. If I gotta rank 'em it would be: Natalie > Pedro = Deborah > Alice > Matt = Georgia. Constructive opinions in order of appearance would be: 1. Natalie - Spice up the tagline typeface, make the logo more visible (colour and size wise), can even do oversized logo imo. 2. Matt - Less elements, typefaces, and colours definitely, looks messy now, and reorganise the kanji so the character wouldn't be split in half by the lid. 3. Georgia - Needs more colours and add vibrance, a bit of lost focus so enlarge some text, elements are not very cohesive, make it tighter and fill them up. 4. Alice - Looks the most corporate, all safe and nothing wrong, make logo stroke round-ended for gentleness, add an extra colour like yellow and some graphical details would pop it a lot more. 5. Deborah - Very artsy, I wouldn't change much, I understand the idea of thick-thin contrast but logo may need a bit tidy up on the leaf cos it looks unfinished, design overall is not too tea-like. 6. Pedro - Very consistent, slightly playful and in-trend, logo looks a bit under-designed, again an extra pop of colour can bring out the green.
This is sooo cool , love this episode! Seeing same brief from different designers using their imagination and different approaches . If I’m shopping around in the supermarket, the first one really got into my eyes the best❤ Sophisticated, artsy, calm in subtle Flowy illustration. Really great mix that art nouveau feel with Japanese perfectly in such a premium calm. If the 5th one has a less complex colour palette , that illustration concept is pretty cool for presenting calm, but the pot is a bit weird
i like matt's. and i would disagree with you on the bird part, its perfect as it is. others were great. but just not for drink packaging. especially if its inspired by geometry type of design. it just doesnt fit, but i think it will fit more if its more like app design or something. second is probably between deborah or Alice imo.
First time on this channel, this video was fun to watch! Matt and Deborah's looked the best to me, other than the T in Matt's "Teal" kinda looking like a P...I'd alter the letter on that one. (At first quick glance I thought it said Peal lol.) Otherwise, both Matt and Deborah give an authentic Japanese feel that the others don't, in addition to the quality of the designs giving an elegant feel as well. The third looked like something from Target--it's not hideous, just generic, and it doesn't scream authentic Japanese anything. And the rest either didn't have much to do with Japan or weren't very luxurious/elegant. Customers want authenticity, so the Japanese emphasis is important, at least I think so! If I had to pick, I'd pick Matt's (with the aforementioned letter edit), then Deborah's. But I think you couldn't go wrong with either. Truly beautiful designs.
The fist one feels exquisite and expensive… i think it would entice non-tea drinkers who would want to experience tea-time in a royal household. People may not realize it but the packaging adds a positive experience or even to the taste of the product. Its a form of mental conditioning
I mean DEBORAH!!! I loooove! Natalie as well, so beautiful! Some of the other ones I didn’t like at all to be honest, like a couple geometric ones didnt feel very premium
The ONLY pack that isn't just Pinterest image wallpaper with generic typeface is no 4 Alice. (which still needs alot of crafting) Again ALL of these could be saved by actually making a brandmark and rescaling elements. Personally Like 1 & 5 as they are gorgeous imagery but both struggle with apologetic branding. Some really nice stuff just let down by pacing on the pack....which is a relatively easy fix!
Hey! I was thinking something.. Have you ever thought of redesigning Carmex? Recently, I 've been using Carmex a lot and I thought (as a consumer( that logo and packaging of the lip balm could be better... Then I' ve started practicing and I've tried to come up with some idea by myself and I thought that it would be interesting to see you trying to redesign it... I think that brand could be seen from two POVs and I would love to see your try💛
These are some amazing creatives and designs, even if mine wasn't here, it was an honor going against all these people! I am waiting for the next battle and I am ready for it 😎😎

I love the first one. Calm, elegant, and sophisticated with a bit of whimsy.
Great points, the illustration is just so good!

They all give off different brand identities to me
Natalie's feels high-end that i would find in a department store
Matt's feels like an long-established tea farm/maker
Georgia's feels like a company that sells various items and this is their tea line
Alice's feels like a health & wellness brand with a notable influencer/sponsor
Deborah's feels like it would be in a collectors set (like bright cellars but tea)
Pedro's feels like a specialty chain like a david's tea

Aww thanks @@aqui0 !! 😊
I like them all but Deborah's is my favorite. That illustration is * chef's kiss *. Makes me want a cup of tea, which is the whole point!
The thing is with Deborah's is she manages to tell a little story in the illustration (like she mentioned) and it's just so creative!
Love 1, 2, and 5, but if I was to choose a favorite, it has to be 1. Personally I think the first one achieved the relaxing concept all three of the designs are aiming for without having to rely on it being coveyed through a landscape/scenery. Natalie and Deborah did amazing! I’d vote Natalie because it’s appealing, eye catching, and not often seen!
I really love Deborah's design. Although I wish that she had chosen more greenish colors (since its all about Matcha and "teal"). The blue makes the soft peachy orange stand out more, due to which Id automatically assume that its rather a peach-flavoured product.

If I were to buy this, I'll choose the first one! So my vote goes to Natalie. 👏🏽
4 to me was the best in terms of illustration and I think the logo has so much potential .Logo wise I liked 1 and 5.
1 & 5 are by far my favorites!
love natalie’s and deborah’s!
Natalie is the best with a close second being debroh!
They both have such high level illustrations!
My very first shot at packaging design and had a great experience. Thanks Abi and keep these design battles coming :)
Great outlook! Thank you for participating, plenty more challenges to come 😊
sorry but its just criminal what natalie did, her design its SO GOOD that send shivers down my spine, omg...
Yes!! She did such a great job!
these all look so great but im supprised i havent seen anyone mention that the T in the first design makes it look like it says Peal
Didn't notice that until I read your comment 😅
I thought that as well!
I just commented about this! Lol finally found someone thinking the same thing 😂
i love deborah's design!!!
Abi making these kind of videos gives us an opportunity to learn more get inspiration and your comments on the changes are really appreciable as they they give another level of insights into the already made designs. Hope to see more such videos and learn more ❤️
Thank you for your kind words, glad to hear you enjoyed the video 😊 Hopefully plenty more to come in the future!
I Like Georgia ( and Matts( design most, just with a little bit more pleasing color instead of grey. It is very different and giving minimalism vibes
Hi Abi!! It would be great if you could do a vid on colors when it comes to printing. Especially 2 color, 4 color etc, things to consider when it comes to printing things, as it's a big part of the graphic designer role :/
I LOVE the last one!! With the first one as runner up.
Thank you 😁
The most elegant and sophisticated looking of the designs was the very first by Natalie.
I honestly love the commentary on this video and enjoyed the constrasting and creative packaging done by these talented designers!
Glad you enjoyed it!😊
Mind-blowing 🤯 to see my fellow designers I also participated and didn't make it but I have learned a lot from this project ♥️
So glad to hear! This is what it's all about 😊 More to come in the new year!
Natalie and Deborah; They have stolen my heart, passionate about fine and elegant design. But it is true that Deborah connects me a little to the perfume and, perhaps it looks too elegant, but I understand that to communicate the premium of the product. I think Natalie got it 100%💚
¡Saludos desde España!
I love Deborah’s. It’s so beautiful.
I had a great time working on this design challenge. Although I was not chosen, I learned a lot! Hopefully, this type of challenge will be a regular thing in the future! 🎉🥂
First, thank you for participating, I really appreciate it! There were over 500 entries all of high standard! And yes this is just the first of many 😊
I feel like ive seen the other designs before.
Matt's work is insanely cool! Love it love it love it! Very elegant and strong at the same time!
Yeah it is! All the elements used work together really well. I love the gold, can look overdone sometimes but he’s used it really well!
🤗🤗🤗
Deborah and Natalie are just, chef kiss
Yes! Both are great! Natalie ended up winning the ipad!
i clicked on this for deborah’s design. i’m so in love
OH NO I LIKE THEM ALL EQUALLY ... but if i have to choose which one it will be the second. It looks more dynamic and makes me excited for my day
It was so hard for me to choose my top 3, I was blown away by the quality of work!!
I was waiting for this for so long but i didnt got choosen but its okay i had so much fun designing teal and i will try better next time 💕
Apart from that these all people have done a great job i have voted for my favorite 💕
Don't be disheartened by it, I had over 500 people enter and all work was of high quality! Plenty more competitions coming in the future 😊 Thank you for your positivity!
SECOND LAST ONE!! OMG!! IT'S EXTRAORDINARY
Yes this is so good! I was honestly blown away but the high standard of every design, I can't give anything away but I will say the voting in very very close between the top 3!
Deborah's packaging is amazing and unique
3 and 6 are my favorites ❤️ but the first design is the one I would choose.
The first one actually won!
@@abiconnick yep, it fits really well for a Tea brand 😎👍
They're all well done. If I gotta rank 'em it would be: Natalie > Pedro = Deborah > Alice > Matt = Georgia.
Constructive opinions in order of appearance would be:
1,2 and 6! 2 being the best
i like matt's. and i would disagree with you on the bird part, its perfect as it is. others were great. but just not for drink packaging. especially if its inspired by geometry type of design. it just doesnt fit, but i think it will fit more if its more like app design or something. second is probably between deborah or Alice imo.

Well welcome! Glad to hear you enjoyed the video 😊 Matt actually one the comp, with Deborah coming 3rd! Appreciate the feedback!
These are all fantastic! I would have a hard time choosing if these designs were presented to me.
They all did great! Matt ended up winning the comp but only by 1%
1 or 5 are amazing !!
Just found your channel, great vids - thank you!
all of these are so incredibly good. great inspirations as well
Love the first, the second and the forth one.
Feel like the quality of all was so high! The voting was so close, only 1% between first and second (Matt and Natalie)
I’m Japanese and i can tell those two are Japan inspired design but also I’m 100% for sure it’s designed by non-Japanese by looking at the design👀
Matt’s is totally my style. Super elegant ❤
He ended up being the winner! Was a greta design!
This was one of the best design bro videos I’ve seen! Great work everyone! 😍👏🏼
Really appreciate it, thank you 😊
1 and 2 were amazing!! I also liked 5! :D
Wow, Deborah's is really good!
That's my favourite too
But they're all really good🥺
The illustrative scene is amazing!
I am falling love those designs in this video and I also love you abi.
2,4,5 😍🤩
I think that brand could be seen from two POVs and I would love to see your try💛
ooo great idea! I'll make a note of it 😊
These are some amazing creatives and designs, even if mine wasn't here, it was an honor going against all these people! I am waiting for the next battle and I am ready for it 😎😎
The standard of work is so high, I'm honestly so impressed by everyone who submitted their work! Thank you for the support and taking part 😊😊
Natalie and Deborah ❤️❤️❤️
deborah was breathtaking
Th illustrative scene and how she did day and night was great!!
I love Pedro's!
I love your personality, you are such a bubbly girl! Keep up the good work
Ah thank you! Really appreciate it 😊
deborah deborah deborah, you smashed it. its doesnt need any type of change
