Face and Double Hand Transplant Journey: Joe Dimeo's Story

- A 22-year-old from New Jersey received the world’s first successful face and double hand transplant at NYU Langone Health.
In July 2018, Joe DiMeo survived a horrific car crash that left him with third-degree burns covering over 80 percent of his body. Despite undergoing approximately 20 reconstructive surgeries, DiMeo had extensive injuries on his face and hands that affected his vision and severely limited his ability to live a functional and independent life.
On August 12, 2020, a team of more than 140 health care professionals was led by Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone, to complete the historic procedure.
DiMeo is Dr. Rodriguez’s fourth face transplant patient, but this is the first hand transplant under Dr. Rodriguez’s direction. Advanced surgical planning and treatment plans for Dr. Rodriguez’s transplant recipients have resulted in some of the best aesthetic, functional, and medicinal outcomes, which have been extensively reported on.
DiMeo continues to progress in his recovery and is incredibly grateful for what his donor and the donor’s family have done for him during their own time of great difficulty.

Its not "an other persons face" anymore. Its his. His bones are underneath shaping it differently from The donors. You can get used to many things with time.
I feel like the hands would be stressful enough for me, the thought of it stresses me out, I feel like I would become at risk for psychosis and or depression knowing that I had donor limbs let alone a donor face, the idea terrifies me.

@Ryan D Wholeheartedly agree. There is so much to it, and self identification, self recognition, and the human psyche are extremely powerful things. As someone mentioned, I am sure they do a psych evaluation before ever doing a surgery like this, but still... That doesn't mean it doesn't still run the risk of a patient being self detached, in shock, etc.
It's incredible what they've managed to do, and I sincerely hope this guy goes on to live a good life with no major psychological issues. He's been through hell and back as it is...

I watched the animation of his surgery first, and they had to remove his hands and face, while taking his new hands and face from the donor, all the while preserving blood vessels and nerves and tendons, it must have taken at least a dozen surgeons, and a plethora of nurses just for the surgery, more nurses and his family during healing, and therapists to help him exercise correctly, he himself worked incredibly hard too, he had to be willing to go through the pain and effort to restore some level of function, the whole thing from the beginning, until current day even, is amazing
The fact that he said " I wanted my hands first because I wanted get back to work" says a hell of alot about the kid. The fact that he went through what he went through and was still worried about contributing to the world for others.... damn good kid.

This might be buried in the comments, but I am a 19-year-old college student who frequently commutes an hour away to pick up my girlfriend from Redondo Beach California. I drive down there to pick her up, drive back to my house, drive her back, and drive back home all in one day. I am usually heavily fatigued and constantly sleep deprived and I have found myself dozing off several times on my way back home to the point where I nearly wrecked my car when I dozed off for several seconds and started to veer out of my lane, but luckily I woke up in time and there were not many cars on the road. I told my parents about my situation but they won't let my girlfriend sleepover so I have to drive her back home the same day. As a teenager I feel as if nothing bad can happen to me so I occupy my mind with fatal car crash videos which put my false reality into questioning. This video has been a huge eye-opening experience for me as it puts how life-changing small decisions can be such as getting proper rest, leaving earlier, keeping myself focused on the road, etc. Thank you for sharing this video
I agree! It’s really really important. I sometimes do long drives where I’m dozing off and I’m 18. I would never ever want this to happen to me or to anyone else because the chance of survival is extremely slim. Maybe try convincing your parents or staying at your girlfriends house. Or maybe stop to eat a meal/get a drink while you’re driving so you don’t get sluggish.

@@cunnoni She has her license, but she can't comfortably drive on the highway. She isn't the best driver and it's my car so I don't think insurance would cover any accidents if she was proven to be behind the wheel.

I saw you replied to someone that she isn’t a good driver and is insecure. I used to be the WORST and MOST INSECURE Driver, but she will never become any better if she isn’t having the practice. Believe me, security and skill can only be obtained after time of practising. So if you guys tried to slowly let her do it over and over, not only her confidence will raise, but also it will be easier on you. I got my license at 20, now I am 24. I wasn’t able to drive anywhere because I was so insecure and now I’m one of those that rage over the tiniest thing haha. Wish you all the best

I'm just constantly amazed at the strength some people display. 22 years old, life changed forever in the most brutal way but still he finds the strength to go on every day. I feel ashamed that I was worried and depressed for almost a year now. What this man had to go through makes me look like a total crybaby. I can’t even fathom what he needs to put up with every single day. Hell, my life’s a blessing! I hope he can find happiness, get better and get his life back! Stories like his put everything into perspective.

Wow I was focusing on him getting his new face so hard that I forgot about his hands. I was absolutely blown away when I saw the transplanted hands moving & seeing that he was able to use them to do things. That truly shows just how far we have progressed in the medical world. I watched a chain of short videos earlier. One featured a young girl, a stay at home daughter. She was showing off her wealth and pointless life. I was disgusted. Then I see this and it gives me faith in humanity. It abounds with courage, love and determination of all involved. The skills of the doctors is incredible in the truest meaning of the word. I am deeply humbled.

I read that one of the two had to have the hands removed due to complications (organ rejection?) and the other one sadly died of infection related to the transplants.

This dr. Is everything I aspire to be. Imagine the amount of patience, compassion,and attention to detail that this guy has. The hours of studying it takes to prepare for something like this. Just amazing. All to make this one guys life, a chance at life for real. Amazing.

This is great, and this is the reason I believe doctors and celebrities should have their salaries revered, doctors should be making the millions for saving lives and celebrities should be making the thousands since they are just entertaining the people. In my opinion doctors are very underpaid for what they do, they spent hours on surgery’s like this one, and celebrities make a concert that last for a few hours and make a lot of money in one night.

Bro i get the good cause but in the end it's the budget of the person that matters. There are so many cases that were called off since the operation cost was high. It's a fact mate- feel bad or not doctors only do surgeries if the person can afford not for the concern of the patient whether he'll make it or not. Doctors is a profession not a service. Everything about this story is so heartwarming. The unfortunate accident that happened to this young man from unforseen circumstances that changed his life forever, often people lose all hope from that situation. The doctors that tried everything to make sure this operation was a success, along with the nerves on the hands staying intact and some of the skin nerves working well. The kind donor who allowed someone else to live on through their life by offering up part of theirs after their passing. I think this is the essence of humanity, to allow others to enjoy the life by spreading life to other, even without having any particular reason to do so.
The odds he has beaten to get this far are amazing. I wish him the best in the future and hope that this opens the doors for future patients the surgical team should be so proud of them selves

I love watching successful recovery vids like this. I'm always blown away by the technological prowess of our medical system and of the sheer force of drive and will of the human spirit. This man got dealt a horrible hand but never gave up and now look at that handsome guy! Man is lifting weights and is ready to get his life going again. HIS HANDS THOUGH!!! I will never not be shocked by his control of his new hands. He went from having so much scar tissue that he had none to almost having full function again! Rock on handsome man!

The huge surgical team that was able to complete this extremely complicated surgery together... Wow. Imagine the amount of communication needed between this many people to pull this off. Absolutely incredible.
