SPAS-15: Franchi's Improvement on the SPAS-12

- The SPAS-15 was Franchi’s successor to the SPAS-12, improved with detachable box magazines (6 round capacity) and a construction of simple sheet metal samplings and polymer. Like the SPAS-12, the -15 allows the used to switch between manual pump action and semiautomatic at basically the touch of a button. There is a grip safety as well as a manual safety, and that manual safety is integrated into the slide lock in an interesting way. The SPAS-15 entered production in 1986, and apparently 180 were imported into the US before the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban prohibited them. In 2005 production ceased so that Franchi could focus on sporting arms while Beretta (which acquired the Franchi firm in 1993) would cover the security and law enforcement market.

I shot this once and I never learnt its name. I've been searching for it ever since. This thing is one of the most impressive guns I ever shot. Quite light surprisingly little recoil. Absolutely fantastic
The box magazine fed shotgun is one place where the old concept of the magazine cut off would be a benefit.
Shotguns in general. Having a loaded magazine full of lethal ammo and loading in a single non-lethal round would be useful.

Had a chance to shoot one of these when I took a tour of the Franchi factory as a teenager - might have been 1988? It was a lot to handle for my teenage self. :)

its more like what looks scary. ww2 era rifle made of wood that shoots 30 caliber rounds from a top loaded clip is fine. But paint it black, put a pistol grip on it, load it with an underfed magazine, with a much smaller caliber and now its a terrifying weapon of war.

Everything but the gas system seems to be influenced by the AR180, quite clever.

I like that Ian refers to the police specialty ammo as "less-lethal" as opposed to "non-lethal" given that the latter description is inaccurate, ingenuous & probably owes more to PR than scientific rigour.

I've only ever heard of them referred to as "less than lethal" in official/police circles. I'd assume "non-lethal" is a commoner misunderstanding similar to "bullet proof vest" instead of the correct: "bullet resistant vest"

Yup, faster reload via magazine changes, but at the cost of ammo capacity. SPAS-12 can load 8+1 shells, although reloading is pretty slow and cumbersome(shells is individually inserted), but some customization and techniques will remedy this.
There's no reason you couldn't mag bigger mags, 9-10 round shotgun box mags are all over the place these days

I NEVER understood why a gun would be semi auto OR pump, i always thought having the pump seemed useless. Didnt occur to me that less than lethal rounds would be used. Very cool feature

Having owned one of these for a short period of time - I can say this... awesome as a semi auto shotgun, a bit too long as a pump action. Slap on the muzzle brake/wad deflector device and you have a super awesome semi auto shotty!

I'm always impressed by how long gun designs stay relevant. Like, this was first sold over 30 years ago, and its still a very popular gun. The 1911 design is over a century old, and yes it has had incremental design changes, but still, it's still coveted by many, and not just for the cult factor.
Allan Zitta of ZM Weapons used one of these with a lot of customization at the Fort Benning 3 Gun Match in open division.

I recently had the oppritunity to work with a local firearms manufacturer that wants to modify the system to be legal to be owned by civilians. I was excited until I saw the ungodly amount of parts to this thing. Love the video wish i could have watched it 2 weeks ago. Keep up the good work!

He's had this as a Q&A question before. IIRC, it's never happened (if he's not completely sure how a gun reassembles, he won't even try taking it apart), but he's had a few close calls.

One of the other guys at work bought a desert eagle one day, so when he went out to talk to a client I field stripped it and put it back in the box. Mind you this was before you could look up videos on TH-cam to learn how to put it back together.

Who else is bothered when the SPAS-12 in video games is pump action and you get killed because it won’t let you shoot faster?
Classic example where devs prefer to let gameplay trump realistic depiction, same reason why SPAS-12 rarely are able to change modes because it's faaar easier for devs to balance the gun around one firing mode. Especially in multiplayer games where gameplay balance is the center, golden pillar that everything else is built around.
Point buy systems are much harder to balance than slot systems, yes?

I remember this auto shotgun gun in Bloodlines back in the day thinking it was completely made up. A more indepth interest for firearms came later. Boy it really rocked vaporized those vamps.

A great gun made by a genius company, which also developed the LF-57, one of the most underrated (at least in Italy) SMGs of the 20th century.
so the civilian version have only 2 shells in the magazine...

Much countries limits to 3 the number of allowed rounds in shotguns for hunting. You can use more rounds for other purposes.
If you need more than three rounds to shoot down a bird, you are doing it wrong.

Random trivia, but this weapon was used in the bank shootout in the film L.A Takedown, which was later remade as HEAT

@@AngPur well the MKA 1919 is more or less the same as a Remington 1100 (but magazine fed of course). The Turkish special forces command uses them. Mine have been very reliable

Perhaps the lettering wasn't big enough, because it says 'Franchi Spas 15'.
I remember how popular SPAS-15s were in Russia in the 90s and early 2000s. They were very fresh, action-movie Western rifle lookalikes in a barren, thirsty enthusiast market, and rather easy to obtain as smoothbores, if obscenely costly; also, seemingly quite popular with private security firms again for the sheer movie-cool factor (same reason there are so many old cheap pump-actions floating around). So 15s disproportionately outnumbered 12s by far. Throughout my childhood, I always saw a few in used gun shops or on sales classifieds - it felt like most of them spent the bulk of their career in attempts to find a new -sucker- novelty seeker to buy them (when not gathering dust in safes). Now it seems most settled down in a collector's safe.
I just added one this week to my collection as a re-enlistment gift. Nothing can touch this for rarity
I do have one small question: how does the pump push the bolt, etc. back when it's in pump mode? I think I get it, that lug on top of the oprod just behind the gas seal probably engages with the pump mechanism when it's locked into pump mode, but I'd just like to make sure.
At 12:45 Ian mentions that the charging handle pin connects to the guide rod, so I assume that the pump handle is connected to those rods which in turn kinda drag the bolt carrier with it into battery.

We used them in the overwatch position guarding gates of US army installations. Had a lot of problems with broken firing pins.

About 10 years ago they flooded the German market with these and you could get one for about 600€... But the magazines cost like crazy.
After seeing this I feel the urge to take mine to the shooting range next weekend. :)

I think the spas 12 looked way cooler than the 15.
Also switching ammo for a single shot or two is better with a tube magazine than a box. You just load the round shoot. and your back to the old rounds.
I still want that SPAS-12. I freaking LOVED IT in games and in real life, even though, I saw it mostly in games.
Hope to see it in real life eventually, and get to shoot it in a shooting range. :D

Both will do the same job, but one will do it with style and class
I don't like it's shape, here in Spain our National Police still have some SPAS-12, but AFAIK they never get any SPAS-15; so even if it was cost effective the SPAS-12 was good enough for their needs.

I was travelling on the Brussels Metro with one of those four man army patrols. One of them was carrying one these and until I saw this video I had thought it was a battle rifle. My immediate reaction was he'd bought an axe to a fist fight.

Thanks for the video, was very interesting to see. I`m from South Africa (where you can still buy this legally - if you have the correct sport shooter status that is -) and I recently bought one new, there is a couple gun shops selling these (I take it someone discovered a few containers full of these somewhere in a warehouse). The interesting fact is that mine is stamped Benelli, all of its paperwork states that as well. The gun store selling them is guys called "Dave Sheer Guns" and are probably the most reputable gun store chain in South Africa, so I strongly doubt that mine is some type of knock-off or fake brand or even refurbished model. Anyway, its an amazing gun that operates flawlessly, would recommend it to anyone.
Always thought this was an interesting weapon, nice to see it get some coverage from an expert with a bit more understanding of its capabilities.
