  • After a lot of testing and tweaking with the Dream Hammock Darien I have found it to be one of the most comfortable hammocks out there. Dream Hammock allows for complete customization of your hammock to not only give you specific features and measurements but they also allow you to give your hammock a bit of a personality.

    Wanted to clarify my complaint about the zipper: Though not an issue at all, I have experienced some drag on the zipper when closing. The zippers Dream Hammock uses on the Darien model are YKK #3's. YKK is a VERY well known brand of zipper and makes one of the highest quality zippers in the world. As I said I was trying to find a complaint about this product like I do with all products I review. Dream Hammock will be able to direct you to different types of YKK zippers to fit your needs.

    Awesome review.
    I've been rocking my Darien 1.2 robic xl for about a year now. Definately have put it through all sorts of situations, and have had no issues. I also would highly recommend the Darien, and Dreamhammocks.
    Keep those adventures coming amigo.

      I would like to know too because I love my old blackbird, built quality is amazing, no issue after 10 years, but it's a double layer and I'm on the market for a lighter, single layer option.

    I have (and love) my DH Raven. But I just pulled the trigger on a Darien in the 1.2 fabric. I've lost a bit of weight this year, and can now (comfortably) try out this fabric. I'm really excited to give this hammock a shot, and see how the MTN 1.2 compares to Hyper D 1.6. I'm also curious to see if there is a noticeable difference in lay between the symmetrical Raven and Asym Darien.
    On another note, I think it would be great if you did a post AT thru hike review of your Darien, now that you really put it through its paces!

    Can you do a comparison video between the Darien and the Black Bird? I own a black bird and couldn't imagine not having a shelf in my hammock now. Is the Darien really that much more comfortable?

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no comparing the 2. I like the features that the Blackbird hammock has but I do sleep better in the Darien. If you are getting a good nights sleep in the Warbonnet then stick with it. But just know the asym design offers a really flat lay.

      Outdoor Adventures WBBB is asym too. Headbox, footbox, same as Dream. But only one pullout.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BobPreis you are correct. Warbonnet sews the bugnet on the foot end to make it seems asym. The head end is a little different though but it's forced to asym because the bugnet pulls out as well. If you take the bugnet off though (warbonnet traveler you will find that it's just a symmetrical hammock at that point.

      I have the WBBB. After seeing the review of it the added shelf is better. Now that the WB XLC now has the foot entry and exit it is superior to the Dream. I've had no jamming issue with the zipper or wear on the bug net. Skeeters can't bite between double layers.

    Great review. Maybe I missed it, but I noticed you are 5' 6" and 150 pounds max.
    Do they make hammocks for tall and hefty guys? I'm sure I'll lose plenty of poundage on the trail, but I'm starting at 6' 3", 250 pounds. My plan was to buy a 2 or even 3 person tent for enough room to bring in my gear with me. I had no clue about this new hammock technology. What's your advice for big guys? Stick with the tent plan or explore the world of hammocks?

    Great review. Living in the desert, my close hiking choices lacks trees for the most part unless going to Mt. Charleston or any other place high enough to reach tree line. I am attracted to the idea of a hammock system that would shed out some weight in the future. My sleep system is Thermarest Neo Air Max for winter, I have couple other options for summer like Neo Air lite, also Exped mats and such, ranging from under a pound to 3+pound depending on the pad; the Neo Air Max is about 2 pounds, then I got an EE Quilt Evolution 20 degree around 24 oz. then tent is Zpack Duplex Camo version that with poles included is about 2 pounds; so in the sleeping system alone I have around 7 pounds give it or take, depending on pad used; I can not sleep on those Thermarest accordion mats as they are way too thin. The issues I see for having a hammock for me is that i am a side sleeper and I toss and turn a lot, that is why I do not use sleep bags; I feel like in a coffin on them. I have never tried a hammock but I do not think they are made for side sleepers are they? Going from my system to an all hammock system as Dariem may offer in future may shed few pounds in carrying weight?

  • @GimpyCamper
    @GimpyCamper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What caused you to change from the blackbird? I’m assuming the weight. I have the xlc and I love it. Come to think of it I purchased it and my enlightened equipment quilts based on your videos. Happy with both. Last year I upgraded my winter quilts and went with a Wooki. I’d had the enlightened equipment slide off about once per night. I think the shelf interfered with it. But I swear I’m warmer with the 30 degree e.e. Than the 0 degree wooki.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the weight at all. I can get the 1.1 blackbird to about the same weight as the Darien. It was because I could customize the look and feel. Also when I went to get a new blackbird (so I could give the other one to my friend) Warbonnet's lightest fabric is a 1.6 which is just a bit too firm for me. The 1.2 fabric is just right (Goldilocks). Still love the blackbird. Which they would offer more fabric options though.

  • @adamw6343
    @adamw6343 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you want to leave the bug net on the Darien open, is it just a matter of draping the zippered side over the ridge line? Is there any way to secure it in the open position? How effective is it staying open in the “net less” mode?

    Hey Frozen,
    I just wanted to say that I am new to hiking over the past few months and have learned pretty much everything I need to get started in this hobby from your channel. I have been getting gear together to start going on multiple day overnight trips starting in the spring, will be mostly solo. I have watched most of your hiking videos multiple times because I enjoy then and they are a great resource when getting ideas to plan trips.
    I ended up getting the Darien in 1.6HD and recently just got it. Is your hammock a right lay? I'm not positive which way I should lay in it. Should my head be by the zipper where the dream hammock tag is? Just want to make sure I'm laying in it correctly.

    My question kind of fits your new to hammock series as well. For a newbie how do you navigate through the option on cottage vendors? Same for quilts an tarps. I can't be the only one that can only afford to purchase one time. You know "buy once, cry once" I took a chance and got a Black Bird xlc hammock from what you have said and what others have said. See I have no idea what different fabrics are like and what the advantages are. I understand the numbering system from your video and more about bug net material. For me I look at durability as i will have it for a long while. Love your videos Thanks. Bruce from the City of Orange in Orange county California.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know there are a lot of new cottage vendors since I got into the game. Honestly I've never heard anything bad about any "made in america" vendors. Just pay attention to reviews online. For fabric choices usually vendors tell you about what the fabrics properties are. you can also check reviews for most fabrics on ripstopbytheroll.com Have you heard of reddit there are many subtopics (sub reddits) you can ask other users for their experience on all different types of products.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on the features you want. The last few times I've used a top cover (dutchware winter sock) I experienced way too much condensation. That experience made me switch to a netless hammock for the winter and I just shut my tarp doors if wind becomes a problems. For 3 season I don't want to remove my bugnet so the Darien works perfect for my needs. Everyone has different needs though. Based on the quality of the worksmanship I assume the Sparrow would be a great hammock as well.

    Thanks for the review! I am considering this for my first “real” camping hammock. They have a 1.6 oz RTS version for $110. I bought a cheap hammock to try camping with, but it’s not a fair shake, since it’s not really designed for camping. I’m not too concerned about the extra weight of the 1.6 fabric, but I keep wondering if I should get it customized. Any thoughts? I’m 5’10”, 200lbs.

      @@FrozensAdventures Oh, I was looking into hammocks for a thruhike of the AT I'm planning to do come April. How did it go? Why'd you choose the Darien over the Sparrow or Raven or other companies' offerings? I can't figure out if I want a symmetrical or asymmetrical system, as I've never owned a hammock. I've been in a couple of cheap ones in the backyard of friends' places. I just know I don't want to use a tent.

      @@FrozensAdventures I found out afterwards that you have a whole series on your AT hike and began watching those videos. I have watched the Darian review, but still wasn't sure why you chose it over the Sparrow or Raven or other companies' offerings. I also understand that asymmetrical lets you lay flat but limits which ways you can lay. When I've seen people review the symmetrical Raven, they only say it allows them to lay however they want. They don't clarify whether or not they can lay as flat as they can in an asymmetrical setup. If you can't lay flat in a symmetrical hammock, why would you care if you could lay whichever way, if you're going to end up being a banana, if that is the case? Because they seem to like the symmetrical setup, it's almost as if they are able to lay flat AND in whichever direction they want without having to flip the hammock. That makes me wonder why anyone would choose an asymmetrical setup. That's my point of confusion.

    I also dont like the zipper on my Darien. I believe they use a #3 zipper standard (don't quote me though) Maybe see if they can use a #5 or #8 zipper instead. I prefer the zipper Dutch has on his chameleon and half zipped-but don't expect them to ever use them on their products. Rumor has it there's bad blood between them.

      Dutch created his own zipper so I'm sure he has patent already in place anyway.

      @@FrozensAdventures Thanks. Have you performed any tests with underquilts on your wide-bodied Darien? Based on this video, th-cam.com/video/0cpNN8uo1R0/w-d-xo.html, I have gathered that the additional width from "XL" fabrics like Robic XL and MTN XL is moot once you're constrained to an underquilt's dimensions.
      Perhaps the one exception to this is a torso length underquilt with a short pad for your legs.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had my hammock cut down to 61" width and haven't had an issue. Wider fabrics could pose a problem but I believe you can get wider underquilts as well or simply a longer hammock allowing you to not have to lay at an extreme angle.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I want to say about 3 feet but if you don't do my mod for then they are half as short because they want you to hook into both pullouts. You can add any shock cord you want though. The pullouts are a hook type system works well for any gauge.

    Why having choose the Darien model instead of Sparrow or the Raven ?

    • @steves3760
      @steves3760 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a lighter option. The Sparrow is the heaviest. I have a Sparrow and have ordered my second. For my purpose the weight doesn't matter. But I'm not counting ounces and grams.
      The Sparrow symmetrical is super comfortable though. I love mine

    • @NostalgicLink
      @NostalgicLink 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steves3760 I don't have ANY hammocks to figure out what I want, but I have narrowed my decision down to either the DH Darien, Sparrow, or Raven.
      I think I would prefer symmetrical, but IDK. IDK if I'm going to hate being forced to sleep one way in an asymmetric design, so I think I'd like symmetrical, but I've also gathered that they don't lay as flat, but maybe they do if you get one long and wide enough, but then I'm worried about it being too big for me and the net falling in my face. I'm 5'7", 150lbs. I want to do a thruhike of the AT using a hammock system, so lighter and smaller is better, but comfort and durability have more weight for me.
      If I go for symmetrical, then it's between a Raven and Sparrow. The only differences I can see between them are that the Raven doesn't zip all the way around and the bug net is loose on the ends for some reason, with shock cordage to keep it closed. The other difference is that you can't get UQ hooks added on the Raven for some reason.
      What're your thoughts?

      @@NostalgicLink I would personally email Randy at Dream Hammock. They helped me out with fabric, length and width according to my height and weight. They seem not bothered at all with my endless questions and the few changes I've made during the process.
      Living in Florida I did not want a lose bug net when I wasn't in my hammock because of the various insects (that aren't all friendly) we have so that was one of my biggest factors in choosing the Sparrow. Good luck friend.

      @@NostalgicLink Why yes! I started off with a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro. It is a very comfortable and symmetrical hammock with a bug net. I bought it at Optics Planet for $35 or $40. I ended up with a couple. The only problem I had was after a few night caps I would fall out as it is a budget hammock and.a little painful to set up. But, it lead me on the search for the best custom hammock I wanted. I'll always have my Grand Trunk's. They are awesome. Give one a shot. Don't forget to purchase straps.
      Don't forget, in a symmetrical hammock you lay on the diagonal. I appreciate the extra fabric to offer wind resistance and a little extra storage in my hammock. These are my two cents.
      Randy is in the business to make his customers happy and to make hammocks. That's why he's very patient answering questions. Have more? Just ask.
