Bummer about the beetle buckles... wish I saw this before purchasing them for my new ridge runner! Hopefully mine don't slip... thanks for the video and for the alternate suspension ideas!
Thank you Rob! I asked about your Suspension in the comments of your Fugal-Innovations Video. Now you showed it! Perfect 👌. I learned a lot from Jeff in the past years. It always amazes me when he comes up with new Ideas. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪.
Great vid. I'd already been using Jeff's Evo loops on my warbonnet strap and buckle system, but I wanted to lighten my hammock load out even more, and just purchased this same setup from Jeff. Also the Warbonnet buckle system was finicky at times in allowing me to make small adjustments. This prusik setup will be perfect for things like that.
I becket hitch the tail end of my straps behind the beetlebuckle and they've never slipped on me. EvoLoops are great though, I use them on a set of Warbonnet straps instead of hardware.
Ah. So, a single wrap prussic? It looks like I need 2 non-jamming prussics for my new setup. I think I ordered universal loops by mistake. I updated the webbing info in the video description. Thanks Jeff!
@@robpelton hi rob. Just wonder what did you order from Jeff? Was it a setup or individual components. You mention non-jamming Prussics and universal loops. Which set would work best. I love this set up and currently using whoopies I made with dutchwear but keen to make or buy Jeff’s set up. Also how long is the webbing?
I had that with my beetle buckles. I found out that the strap was fed through the wrong way. The strap needs to tighten the slider against the trailing end of the main metal loop with tension. So the strap goes from tree (into the under side) through the large metal loop of the main piece. The slider goes on top with the strap now up and through hole in the slider and then over the back (the tree side) of the slider (outside the slider hole) and down through the main loop again. If done right the excess strap will come out on the tree side of the buckle and be on top of and parallel with the tension side of the strap. I had to figure that one out on the first night of a 3 day trip. PM me if you need a picture.
Yep. They were set up like that from Dutch. I even removed them and tried the other way as well. Which is why I was so confused. All good though. This system is pretty sweet.
I didn’t change up dog bones. I experimented with shorter ones though. It wasn’t a good idea. The hammock was very tippy and I had trouble fitting the spreader bars in the triangle. Thanks for watching!
How do you wrap the blue part of the suspension onto the strap. It’s it a prusik knot? You said like a prusik knot. I bought Whoopie slings from Jeff but this looks easier
Seems like the tree straps are rolled up and will damage the bark on the trees. We camp in a lot of state parks and they worry about that. I bought the Warbonnet Whoopi slings and noticed the same thing. I just use the standard WB straps and I don’t have that issue.
I would call it the best option for rain runoff. A single suspension line will have less run off than 2 from the dogbones. Is it necessary? No, but you may have deal with a little more precipitation.
I have been looking a hammocks for a while now. I’m a total beginner I’m on the between a gathered end and the ridge runner. Leaning towards the ridge runner. Is this going to be a good beginner hammock and should I order the suspension from warbonnet or should order this system I’m not super concerned about weight. Your videos are great. Do know of any places that let you try out hammocks in the twin cities area. I would to try out a hammock before I commit
The stash is magnificent. The straps are too complicated for this dummy though. Ill have to have you show me the "ropes" someday. I'd like to learn more!
I see 2 things to think about. It didn't look like the tree strap part was flat around the tree. It looked sorta rolled up, and not spreading out the load. The other issue is if the suspension gets wet and then freezes. I forgot about that, and the prusik knots I used for the tarp froze, and I was unable to adjust them.
It binds up where the prussic knot is. Not around the tree. Also, the webbing material doesn’t hold or absorb water. Never had an issue with these. And I camped at -27° f this last winter.
the material on these is near zero water absorption and even less than polyester. the "prusic" part has the knot and small loop to overcome the issue should it ever freeze. th-cam.com/video/iuhgM1UdEtg/w-d-xo.html
Yes I do! The way I use them works very well. I run the mods over the ridge line to help prevent rubbing on the tarp. This is why Warnonnet stopped selling them. Dutchware, I believe, has them.
Super helpful video! You do a great of explaining the why and how for Jeff’s suspension system to a novice hammock backpacker. Thank you!
Jeff is the Professor of Amsteel hammock suspension - I've been hammock camping for 12 years and this is my favorite suspension!
Agreed!

Saving for a Ridge runner. I use a Beckett Hitch suspension for my gathered end hammock. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for watching!

Even this system is finicky. It’s super light, but I’m still tweaking it. I’ll update when I find the ultimate!
Wow smart! Really good stuff Rob. Thanks for sharing. 🤙
Thanks for watching!
MyersTech makes great gear, I have a couple of his Continues Ridgelines on my tarps.
I have one too. Haven’t used it yet though.
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing👍😉
Thanks for watching!
I use the daisy chains and carabiners due to the giant trees in the PNW.
Oh I bet! I d love to see some hang pics on those trees!
Great presentation Rob. Also FYI you can make things like the Evo loop etc yourself it’s pretty easy. I used Jeff’s videos and made my own :)
Oh yes, I’m aware. I just don’t want to. Lol. Thanks for watching!

I did that for awhile. One thing I didn’t mention was how the hooks on the beetles poked a hole on the edge of my fly. That was the final straw.
@@robpelton oof, that sucks. Was it because your Ridgerunner puts them further towards the tree? I haven't run into that yet but I'll keep an eye out.
Robert thanks! the Webbing is dyneema uhmwpe, look like you have one extra wrap on the blue piece , you can eliminate that for easier adjustment

Hey Rob noticed you changed up your dogbones here as well can you elaborate on that change?
I didn’t change up dog bones. I experimented with shorter ones though. It wasn’t a good idea. The hammock was very tippy and I had trouble fitting the spreader bars in the triangle. Thanks for watching!
How does the continuous loop of the hammock attach to the system? Do you tie it on with a lark's head?
Exactly right. Good catch.
How do you wrap the blue part of the suspension onto the strap. It’s it a prusik knot? You said like a prusik knot. I bought Whoopie slings from Jeff but this looks easier
Yep. A prussic knot. Jeff can put it in for ya too and have you ready to roll.
Nice system. 👍
Thankee

It does roll up where the knot is. Not so much around the tree. I stay mindful of that for sure.
Is it necessary to have this WB metal buckle in the suspension or is it not necessary and just a kind of water barrier?
I would call it the best option for rain runoff. A single suspension line will have less run off than 2 from the dogbones. Is it necessary? No, but you may have deal with a little more precipitation.
@@robpeltonThank you Rob! I will try it too exactly that way! Thanks for your work here at youtube and best regards from germany! :-)

I would just go with the suspension from Warbonnet. They’re pretty simple. I wish there was a place to try before you buy. That would be great!
The stash is magnificent. The straps are too complicated for this dummy though. Ill have to have you show me the "ropes" someday. I'd like to learn more!
Fo sho!
What’s the weight of the Suspension? I‘ am thinking about ordering one from Jeff for my Ridgerunner. Thank you in advance!
3.8oz/108g

Do you still use the short-pole mod for your Mountainfly? If so, do they still sell those poles anywhere?
Yes I do! The way I use them works very well. I run the mods over the ridge line to help prevent rubbing on the tarp. This is why Warnonnet stopped selling them. Dutchware, I believe, has them.
Woohhhoo! First one to comment!
