I realize it's a year later but if you suspect yours is still original, just replace it they're not expensive. If it doesn't seem very old then I'd consider cleaning out the valve inside it assuming it actuates freely.

Just out of curiosity, are you running the factory idle air control valve on the 97, if so have you ever cleaned it out?
