Tyson was absolutely the best boxer of my lifetime (41 years old). Sadly, his lifestyle out of the ring completely ruined what probably would've been the greatest career of all time.

Speed is an important element of creating power. You can be strong, but you still need to generate speed to create power. Mike Tyson is a perfect example of this.

I mean I remember being young watching Tyson wreck people, but never really got into it, kinda got into MMA, I guess I appreciate it. It's def been interesting learning about some of these guys from the 80s and 90s though, which seemed to be the peak for the martial art.

My dad grew up in the 70's and 80's; always says that's his favorite fighter and watched all his fights. It's interesting to me because my dad is from Puerto Rico, moved to the mainland in the late 70's and became a huge fan of SRL.

Tysons head and foot speed was unmatched in his weight class. He was 5 inches shorter and weighed 20 pounds less than the average heavyweight during his time. So he had the smaller frame for the speed, but he was built like a brick shit house with frieght trains for hands, and he was hitting harder than anybody else. Tyson is a freak of boxing nature in ever good way possible.

I tried to watch some of the full matches of these and found that the footage was completely unwatchable haha so all I can say is WOW!!! Well done for putting all of this together and you guys' ability to bring back old footage to this quality is pretty amazing
mc365mc I think it's more like 6 out of 10, there are plenty of boxers throughout history who have slow hands but immense power, like Foreman and Liston. Some boxers are a slouch in the speed department but they are still blessed with natural power, just like there are plenty of fast boxers who couldn't break an egg?
@@muz4050 I would call guy Like Foreman and Liston heavy handed. Meaning the punch with a thud from the first bell to the last. Those kind of guys get latter round KO's. Power punchers like Tyson and Wilder get KO's early on fresh and sharp opponents. Their hands are quick enough to connect with shots you don't see comming, but powerful enough to put you out cold with just one early in the fight.

I firmly believe Ali and his management would have dealt with Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and all the fighters who he would’ve dealt with on their way up the ranks.

I met him n Jessie Vargas the same night we all stood around n chaves was giving Jessie some boxing pointers as the slowly spared n I held Jessie’s championship belt on my shoulder. Little did I know Jessie would box manny a couple months later!… fantastic memory for me. What a night!

I appreciate your knowledge and ability to translate that into something anyone can understand. I am a soldier and thought boxing was boring. It wasn't until I started to see the level of skill that can be achieved. How someone can come from behind a guys low gard,pulling there hook in to slip the punch behind the arm and straight into the liver. Or just being able to change direction of a punch in mid flight without losing power. Thank you for what you do for the sport
What is amazing to me is how much power a punch carries. Imagine in training hitting a huge bag of sand with both hands 100s of times a day. When you take someone like Foreman or Tyson, one of their punches carries enough force to knockout down a brick wall. This is why many boxers get their jaws broken and end up with brain damage later in life.
OMG boxing is the most unboring sport there is, I'm glad your eyes are open, combat with rules is great because like in MMA if you just take someone down break a limb, or sleep someone that means death in real fight, but the art of hands takes a gentleman to do, and appreciate, you sir are now a gentleman

It's a really great explanation of the fight tactics and the adjustments being made in real time. James Toney as a fat and out of shape heavyweight is another boxing master to learn from. You'll enjoy it and learn a lot from it. Boxing is so much more than two guys just throwing punches at each other. There's so much that goes into it , it's like human chess and a lot like poker ,it takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master, where the right answer is always " It depends ". I'm glad that I was lucky enough to catch most of these fights when they happened. It was a real golden era for boxing , so many excellent fighters fighting each other. I hate how these days the biggest fights don't get made or if they do happen , it's years after they should have been made. Also , fighting once a year is b.s.
For real, the uppercut that made his opponent retreat to the ropes before those two lethal right hooks looked like something straight out of video game like teken or something. It was just brutal to watch. Straight up warrior stuff.

Bc Norris made a mistake, but he didn’t lose concentration as the original broadcaster alluded to in the moment. Only on analysis was it clear JJ was willing to eat Norris’ shots electing for water in the basement as he knew he’d lose a decision but only needed one big shot. The angle at which he threw that right he’d been choreographing all fight as a liver punch. He was dropping his head and slightly tilting to the right in what I always thought was him tipping his punch overtly. Superb patience to throw at the right time bc if he missed, Norris was way too smart to fall for it again. Turned it over and pivoted into what I still think is one of the most devastating single blows I’ve ever seen. Even JJ held his pose for a split second revealing how devastating it was with Norris having a vertical nap

I still feel like it was the speed. At the end of his career he still had the power but he was just a short muscular guy who lacked the speed to close the distance.
I’ll tell you one speedster who had underrated power was Sugar Ray Leonard. He may not have had the one punch knock out power, but his combinations were heavy handed.

Well I don´t know why they included Hearns as a power puncher either. He was quite powerful, but all of his knockouts came through his amazing speed. Hagler(RIP) was truly the most powerful fighter of that time in this weight. I don't know how they consider Eubank as a power boxer. Man has barely 40% knockout ratio. Considering Amir Khan against Canelo was also pretty stupid choice.Khan knows nothing about defense.
I'm a relatively new boxing fan, but Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime had the kind of fights that you really don't see anymore. 15 rounds where two guys are punching each other like it's a Rocky movie. Absolute slugfests and yet the fighters were super Tactical probably the most entertaining full fights I've ever seen
The craziest thing is through Canelos loss to Mayweather, he took the knowledge from that fight and became the most dangerous man in the sport. Both offensively and defensively.

Big error in first 3 min…Hearns recorded 2 knockdowns vs Leonard not one…in two different rounds thus two 10-8 rounds in which Hearns won 7 rounds thus easily winning the fight…except everyone overlooking Leonard’s shortcomings to give the golden boy a face saving draw that Ray later admitted he clearly lost the fight,despite having some good moment’s

I don't think punches did it. Seems like something else. He was very skilled so it's not like he got hit clean that many times over all throughout his career.
Tyson is the universal proof that hitting fast does not mean lacking power. What make those punch rifle possible is mostly the resistance of the opponent, but most of these guys just hit like trucks. A knockout is also done out of sight most of the time. A diret punch in the face will rarely knockout, you have to hit out of the line of sight so that the brain cannot prepare for the impact. Tyson was really good at this

Some boxers are a slouch in the speed department but they are still blessed with natural power, just like there are plenty of fast boxers who couldn't break an egg?

@@muz4050 I would call guy Like Foreman and Liston heavy handed. Meaning the punch with a thud from the first bell to the last. Those kind of guys get latter round KO's. Power punchers like Tyson and Wilder get KO's early on fresh and sharp opponents. Their hands are quick enough to connect with shots you don't see comming, but powerful enough to put you out cold with just one early in the fight.

I firmly believe Ali and his management would have dealt with Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and all the fighters who he would’ve dealt with on their way up the ranks.

I appreciate your knowledge and ability to translate that into something anyone can understand. I am a soldier and thought boxing was boring. It wasn't until I started to see the level of skill that can be achieved. How someone can come from behind a guys low gard,pulling there hook in to slip the punch behind the arm and straight into the liver. Or just being able to change direction of a punch in mid flight without losing power. Thank you for what you do for the sport
What is amazing to me is how much power a punch carries. Imagine in training hitting a huge bag of sand with both hands 100s of times a day. When you take someone like Foreman or Tyson, one of their punches carries enough force to knockout down a brick wall. This is why many boxers get their jaws broken and end up with brain damage later in life.
OMG boxing is the most unboring sport there is, I'm glad your eyes are open, combat with rules is great because like in MMA if you just take someone down break a limb, or sleep someone that means death in real fight, but the art of hands takes a gentleman to do, and appreciate, you sir are now a gentleman
There's a video with a breakdown of the fight between Duran and Barkley, I believe it's on the Motivedia page. It's a really great explanation of the fight tactics and the adjustments being made in real time. James Toney as a fat and out of shape heavyweight is another boxing master to learn from. You'll enjoy it and learn a lot from it. Boxing is so much more than two guys just throwing punches at each other. There's so much that goes into it , it's like human chess and a lot like poker ,it takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master, where the right answer is always " It depends ". I'm glad that I was lucky enough to catch most of these fights when they happened. It was a real golden era for boxing , so many excellent fighters fighting each other. I hate how these days the biggest fights don't get made or if they do happen , it's years after they should have been made. Also , fighting once a year is b.s.

17:15 underrated is not a word I enjoy using bc JJ could take contenders heads off in weight classes well beyond his which I wish got more attention but man this knock out was so brilliant. Bc Norris made a mistake, but he didn’t lose concentration as the original broadcaster alluded to in the moment. Only on analysis was it clear JJ was willing to eat Norris’ shots electing for water in the basement as he knew he’d lose a decision but only needed one big shot. The angle at which he threw that right he’d been choreographing all fight as a liver punch. He was dropping his head and slightly tilting to the right in what I always thought was him tipping his punch overtly. Superb patience to throw at the right time bc if he missed, Norris was way too smart to fall for it again. Turned it over and pivoted into what I still think is one of the most devastating single blows I’ve ever seen. Even JJ held his pose for a split second revealing how devastating it was with Norris having a vertical nap

Well I don´t know why they included Hearns as a power puncher either. He was quite powerful, but all of his knockouts came through his amazing speed. Hagler(RIP) was truly the most powerful fighter of that time in this weight. I don't know how they consider Eubank as a power boxer. Man has barely 40% knockout ratio. Considering Amir Khan against Canelo was also pretty stupid choice.Khan knows nothing about defense.
I'm a relatively new boxing fan, but Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime had the kind of fights that you really don't see anymore. 15 rounds where two guys are punching each other like it's a Rocky movie. Absolute slugfests and yet the fighters were super Tactical probably the most entertaining full fights I've ever seen

Big error in first 3 min…Hearns recorded 2 knockdowns vs Leonard not one…in two different rounds thus two 10-8 rounds in which Hearns won 7 rounds thus easily winning the fight…except everyone overlooking Leonard’s shortcomings to give the golden boy a face saving draw that Ray later admitted he clearly lost the fight,despite having some good moment’s

The crazy part about the fight between Taylor and Chavez was that Taylor took such a beating that he never recovered from it. In his following fights he looked physically broken. He never reached his potential because of this.
Meldrick got hit a lot by other fighters. His damage was not from one fight. he was too much a warrior.
He also fought people out of his natural weight class like Terry Norris and Aaron Davis.

Tyson is the universal proof that hitting fast does not mean lacking power. What make those punch rifle possible is mostly the resistance of the opponent, but most of these guys just hit like trucks. A knockout is also done out of sight most of the time. A diret punch in the face will rarely knockout, you have to hit out of the line of sight so that the brain cannot prepare for the impact. Tyson was really good at this
