He came to my elementary school and spoke to us kids in the classroom. He didn’t just have all the kids in the school in one room, he spoke and met with each individual class. He’s a great guy and still loved in the community.

Roy was a once in a lifetime kind of boxer. In his prime there wasn’t a person that he couldn’t hit. He was insanely fast, could punch from any angle and direction and had a super high boxing iq. I’m grateful I was alive to see him back when he was in his prime.
I never knew that Roy, by far the best fighter in the world in his prime, actually declined higher-paying fights in Vegas so that he could put on shows in his hometown. That's awesome, man. He never forgot his roots and where he came from. How you haven't been signed to make more of these documentaries for a king's salary is beyond me, man. Another incredible video.
Pensacola will always love Rpy for what he did and still does. He was just as great out-of the ring as he was in the ring

Dude, initially just appreciated your comment as RJJ is still, IMO, the p4p GOAT. (at least until Loma retires. Roy himself agrees w/ me here) Then I noticed your pic. Again IMO as a (former) lifelong FB fan, #16 is, for me personally, another f’n GOAT and another one just as genuine as Jones. Was a fan since his ASU days, lived in Phx then, and his Rose Bowl game was straight-up legend shit, even in a loss. I’m a CO native and when #7 retired I dreamt about seeing “The Snake” in orange & blue, when that finally happened I can’t even describe the emotions. I hadn’t ever even cared much about that side of the ball until Jake, he brought a defensive intensity to the offense. Maybe not the most skilled QB ever but he GENUINELY wanted to WIN and didn’t give a shit if it looked pretty or not! Favre & Elway are really the only close comparisons. Those seasons were the summit for me and really the demise as well, wasn’t ever the same after that. The contempt I developed for Mike Shanahan over that situation boiled over to the rest of the game and essentially ruined it from within for me. It stayed fun thru the Manning years but that was the end for me, they’re all just a pack of showboating, money fueled whores now. No more ‘TEAMs’, just a bunch of ‘I’s.
Apologies for the ‘life story’ comment but Roy Jones Jr. and Jake Plummer are 2 men that I hold in equally high regard, not just in their respective fields but also in life. It's not Jones fault that Toney wasn't disciplined at that time. Toney would've beaten any other super middleweight that night, but not Roy Jones Jr.

Easily my favorite boxer of all time. I remember watching the Y'all must've forgot "Can't be touched" boxing highlights well over 1000 times. I first saw it on youtube around 2008/2009 and it was the most jaw dropping spectacle I've ever seen. Hands down, hands behind his back, Dancing, spinning around, bob and weave..
A masterclass in exciting and entertaining combat. Smoked two legends in Bernard Hopkins and James Tony.

Roy Jones was such a class act. My brother was in the press corp and I had the opportunity to see a bunch of bouts. Roy was always a gentleman and was gracious to Everyone, not only the people that he needed to be. He was great inside and outside the ring.
The guy who “won” the gold holding Roy’s hand up was awesome. Hates the way it happened but it was good to see him know Roy won.
Roy said the so called winner, came to his locker room afterwards and said, "You beat me". Roy said, that was all he needed to hear and then he was ready to move on!
The MOST honorable thing the Korean fighter could have and SHOULD have done was, not accept it and gave it to Roy! He probably would have been killed tho because, you KNOW how them Asians are about their so called honor🤷

The only fighter who was ever able to duplicate, and maybe even surpass Roy is the Boston fighter Joe Calzaghe. He actually beat Roy Jones and made him look average. Hats off to Joe as well. He was just as sick as Roy if not better. He retired undefeated if I remember correctly. Still Roy's skill and ability was one of the best ever.

Roy Jones Jr was an absolutely astonishing boxer! I watched his bouts in the '88 Olympic Games and thought that nothing could stop him winning the gold, he was so dominant in every fight. Then that fucking shambles of a robbery occurred and I was gobsmacked.
The thing about your man Roy Jones Jr was that, throughout his career, he invariably fought top-notch, quality boxers and not only beat them but made them look like amateurs. Furthermore, there wasn't a single journeyman among his opponents. Which can't be said for many world champions of any era. A boxer with such supreme skill and punching power comes along about every 50 - 60 years or so. It's small wonder that he's become a true legend. He absolutely deserves it!

I remember Tarver giving Roy a hard time about how losing the weight didn't matter but when Tarver bulked up to heavyweight for the Rocky movie he was in then had to get back down to 175 lbs to fight Hopkins he finally admitted the weight loss really set him back. Chris Byrd experienced the same thing as he was a legitimately competitive heavyweight for a few years but tried to get back down to light heavyweight and got destroyed. It's one thing to lose 5-10 pounds for a fight but once you start losing over that, especially muscle weight, your body isn't in good shape when you're fighting at an elite level. Yes, in terms of health compared to a normal person you're in great shape but not in MMA or boxing, that kind of loss is really damaging and it sealed Jones fate. Tarver eventually moved up because he also just wasn't the same. It's a lesson future boxers hopefully learn.
RJJ had a major issue, in that he had no rival. nobody was even remotely competitive. so he kept going up in weight, to find new challengers. shouldn't have gone up to hw though.

He was smart, he should have known eventually his physical skill would decline and started adding things to his repertoire. Sucks because he is my all-time favorite fighter and watching him unable to adjust was rough. In his prime though, the man was a sight to behold.

I'm from Pensacola and watching him when I was a young kid and teenager was amazing.
There was a time when you thought he could never be beat. In his prime no one had that combination of speed, power and elusiveness. It was amazing that he was able to keep his power as he moved up all those weight classes. He was something to see.

When he jumped down from HW his body was too compromised by the fact that he went up, he just wasn't himy anymore.

He's right up there with Sugar Ray Robinson and his skillset was amazing. He had a Middleweights body and fought mostly at Light Heavyweight towards the end. He just wasn't the same when he came back down in weight. Once you go up you have to stay, he lost too much muscle and was around 35 which is getting up there for a fighter. Still one of the all time greats in my book.
@Bruce Wayne , I don't know what your trying to say? Sugar Ray Robinson was a Welterweight, Middleweight. He did start out fighting as a Lightweight in his early days. He fought for Light Heavyweight title but was mostly regarded as a Middleweight. Salvador Sanchez was a Featherweight. Ray Robinson was taller, faster and could punch. So you obviously never seen Robinson.

No doubt Sanchez could be rated as one of the all time great Boxers and top pound for pound. Yes, He's in any conversation because he was a special fighter. Where your argument fails though is when you start saying he would rip Ray Robinson apart ? I mean that's laughable because Robinson was 160 and I don't remember any 126 guys ripping apart any 160 guys. He was also around 5'10, 11 longer reach. He was way too big for Sanchez. I mean you are trying to make an argument that you have nothing to support it with. Ray Robinson fought bigger stronger men and Sanchez fought primarily as a Featherweight and was pretty much always fighting guys 126 and under.

His decline happened when he was 35, for a fighter who depends on them you just drop off around that age. Seen it in Australian rugby league (NRL), seen it in cricket. Seen it heaps in MMA. Roy is the poster child for it because his reflexes were so much better than everyone else's, the man was a genetic freak. He got me ifrom being a casual fight fan to a lover of boxing, then MMA. My favourite fighter by a country mile, will always be a Roy fan, he's my vote for goat.
True, but Glover Texeira won the LHW title, I think he is 44 I believe. He is definitely an outlier, this doesn't happen often at all, but just pointing out that some people can last longer than others. But it's not usually a good idea to fight past that point even if you CAN still fight. It would be better for your brain and body to retire, at least before you actually get seriously hurt, or make the CTE worse than it has to be.

@@KenMastersxtc yeah, you dont suddenly turn 35 and your body instantly falls apart that day, granted it doesnt recover as fast as it would if you was younger, but if you have bad lifestyle habits and a bunch of injuries, thats when it starts catching up to you quick imao, usually when people are still at a elite level in their late 30's 40's its because they took care of themselves, and they avoided any major injuries up to that point.

In his prime, probably the best middleweight of all time, he struggled as he put the weight on, it sapped his insane speed and he didn't have the power to threaten the bigger men. But at his true weight he was virtually unstoppable, he literally ruined the division for years with people going to other classes to avoid him.
Roy arguably did more work at light heavy than middleweight and holds several records for title defenses
@@DJRedrumofEPG I agree but part of the reason for that is that he had chased people out of the middleweight division and had to go hunting for fights. I still feel that he was at the peak of his powers at middle 👍

When I was a kid, Roy was that dude! Roy and Pernell Whitaker were my two favorite fighters. There was no one like Roy, and I don't think there has been anyone like him since.

Jones in his prime was one of the true greats ...he was so good that he didn't even really need to work on his fundamentals...he based his style on watching rooster fight .
If you look at Hopkins ( who put up a pretty decent attempt against Roy in his prime but he wasn't in Roy's class ) he's a classic case of "what is not born is made " and that's why he was able to keep on fighting well into his 40s whereas Roy faded quickly ...his punch resistance and I also think his legs ...but having said that Roy was THE most exciting fighter that I ever watched ...he was a fucking freak.
