When I was in college in 1982, a friend of mine just return from his spring break trip to Maui. George Benson has a home in Lahaina. My friend was at club there and George Benson came into the club. Management closed the doors, Benson played for the crowd all night long!!! What a night!!!
I worked at a store called SCOOP on 5th Ave in Pittsburgh. This incredible musician & his son came in..1977..we closed the store to the public for 2 hours so they could shop. He was so charming & generous it is a cherished memory of my life. He sent us a case sparkling something. Does anyone remember the store..carrying a Scoop bag was so cool...not even a Birkin in today's would could compare....much simpler time..let's go back there ..thank you MR George Benson for your musicality & being the classy man I was so fortunate to meet you
Sweet Jesus!!! That bass player is about as funky in the pocket as you could get! Real solid. Good Lawd, George was on God level with that straight up live performance. genius level top notch performer. To just walk on stage, and do that, and walk off!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!
I love his solos dubbing with his voice....lovely brother coloured as I am a pale face... You spell the real Jazz emotion... Be blessed you all in Jesus name...
Every time I hear this song, it brings tears of Joy to my eyes! It is such a Perfect song, and this is coming from a diehard Rock/Heavy Metal Fan! Mr. Benson, you will forever be in the Pantheon of Guitar Gods!
Check out George Benson jamming with BB King for about 20 minutes on the album BB King and friends from I think 79. Wow! My favorite Johnny Winter and his brother Edgar are on that album too!
George Benson a man in heart and soul, and he performs that through his fantastic playing on his beloved guitar instrument, a natural talent! I feel the positive energy vibration flowing through my body ...straight into my soul! Also, I appreciate the many good musicians that surround him... All of them, one by one, are good musicians... ! Thank you !
Once I was in a local music store in Paramus, NJ and there was a loudspeaker page for George Benson. I asked the salesman “Was that an inside joke ?” and he said no, George Benson was probably in the store. “He comes in here a lot”, he said. Then he pointed “that’s him right over there.” And I saw a man all dressed in a white sport jacket and hat answering the phone while his little boy circled. I told the salesman I was a huge fan and he told me I should go over and say hello. He said George was a super nice guy and never minded meeting and chatting with a fan. I could see that he was busily engaged on the phone so I left him alone. But I couldn’t believe how close I was standing to such talent. And one thing I hadn’t expected was how short he is. I’m only 5’3 and I think he was shorter than I. Which explains the scaled down size of the awesome Ibanez signature guitar. Anyway, I’ve always regretted that I didn’t wait around to get the chance to tell him how much I enjoy and admire his guitar playing. Mr. Benson is without a doubt one of the best.
The drummer , oh my God, unbelievable, so talented, George Benson was sweating before he started to sing, really fantastic, my shivers down my back, hair standing on end, Terri Leckner, Montreal, Canada
I was telling a friend once how I thought Mr. Benson was a great guitarist and he reminded me that George is a great singer as well. Yes indeed. Add performer to the GREAT list as well now!
George benson is one of the nicest musicians I've met an spoke to him at upstairs room at trubadaure with my favorite guitar player post jazz bop guitarist Pat Martino❤ in Hollywood 76 it was amazing also seen him at Las Vegas benson is one of the best guitarists theres so many ❤
Scatting and playing at same time and to think at first they didn’t know he could sing! But when they heard he wasn’t just jazz guitar the rest was history!
I saw GB in London 1982 and his oncore was BREZZING and that still brings tears of joy to my eyes. This is also George at his best. Thank you are a true star.....
George Benson is a true master of the guitar. This song is really and absolute piece. No one place guitar like George Benson! Fortunately I had a chance to see live. Great show.
George Benson has been at the forefront of jazz guitar since Breezin' came out in 1976. I got to see two shows in Houston that summer and it was truly amazing. This guy has been ripping it up since the 60s. He started playing professionally (sort of) when he was eight years old. In the sixties and seventies he was considered one of the fastest players in the world. Check out the George Benson Cookbook, I think his second named album.
I saw George in concert in the 70's at Cincinnati Music Hall . . . Great Time . . . opening act was ( RIP) Minnie Ripperton . . . She was Fantastic . . . and then George just "Killed It" . . . everyone was dancin in the aisles . . . best concert ever . . .
And this year if God allows me. I buy my guitar and start playing ... I always wanted to be a guitarist ... And I will be, in the fall of my life. It does not matter!
If you got the itch, scratch it! Guitar is one of the most rewarding and fun things to take up as a hobby and have fun. Limitless possibilities. There was nothing better than learning it and then joining up with other musicians and playing even the most basic of songs with them. I started in 9th grade, that year I played our school talent show with some friends and covered Have a Drink on Me by AcDc. That experience hooked me and I've been playing religiously ever since!
Just phenomenal! It blew me away the first time I ever heard him scat with the guitar note-for-note; (like he does here starting at 2:34) and it was so perfect! What a talent!
Scatting isn’t as hard as it sounds. To use an audio metaphor, it’s like taking another line out of the same signal. He’s thinking this melody line anyway. Singing a regular song and playing lead at the same time is actually harder. Playing a bass line and singing lead is way harder because you’ve got to split your head in half and track two melodies at once, plus lyrics, plus independent dynamic decisions.
Had the priviledge of seeing him in Perth Aussie many, many years ago and I was blown away. Hearing and seeing this just reiterates what a wonderful talent he has. Thank you GB for your mind blowing songs.
On this day in 1978 {April 23rd} "On Broadway"* by George Benson peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart, for the two weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those two weeks was "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams... I met him at the Hill House which had a jam session in Pittsburgh my home town on Labour Day weekend 1991. When i walked in the door the Lady told me your man is here tonight and i heard in the background him playing. He must have been in town for something and when he does he used to walk down to his old places and where there is someone playing and sit in with the musicians. I introduced myself to him and i asked him to sign my off white sport coat i had on and he did.. You can just see he is a wonderful person the best of the best and very humble. That was the ist time and i also bumped into him again in 2008 or so.
I really have no need to state it....but GB is without doubt the finest male jazz guitarist/singer of the 20th century. I should know because I cannot play like he does, but I do know what it takes to get to be a musically proficient and as eminent a stage performer. Years of dedicated musical study and hard learning, self-application to the craft of guitar playing, and a willingness to share the love of it with the world. Having seen GB perform live at Sydney Hilton Hotel was one of the great highlights of my life that I was able to enjoy with my sons, who years later never cease to sing his praises for having so uplifted them. Thankyou GB may you enjoy a long life and long give us heavenly performances here on earth. Cheers. Poppa Madison (Australia)
For those newly discovering Mr. Benson, find his album The George Benson Cookbook released in the sixties. He can really rip it up! While his dancing isn't quite world-class :), he is undoubtedly one of the most incredible singers and players ever.

This is the song that inspired me to get a buy a guitar and learn to play. Mostly now it is classical guitar. Toss in SRV and and "Little Wing" and I am a happy musician. George Benson is a class act....enjoy!
I am watching this video for the second time because the drum solo is extraordinary!!!! The musicians that perform with George have been with him for years and i have heard the drummer but never had pleasure of seeing up close Another thing to pay attention to is George scatting i have heard that like Ella, he is very very skilled at this Finally I just wanna say that I respect The G man as I call him. He suffered a stroke if I am.not mistaken, and made a full George. Benson is a giant in the industry and I encourage everyone to view Absolute Benson on utube.
When I was in college in 1982, a friend of mine just return from his spring break trip to Maui. George Benson has a home in Lahaina. My friend was at club there and George Benson came into the club. Management closed the doors, Benson played for the crowd all night long!!! What a night!!!

Scatting isn’t as hard as it sounds. To use an audio metaphor, it’s like taking another line out of the same signal. He’s thinking this melody line anyway. Singing a regular song and playing lead at the same time is actually harder. Maravilhoso.......
Grand thème de ce grand artiste ! Greetings from France ...! 😉😀
Incredible performance. Thank you George.
...!I ALWAYS DUG HIS CONTEMPORARY JAZZ FUNK FOR YEARS AND YEARS...AND THAT "SKAT DUO" HE DOES WHEN HE TAKES OFF DOIN' THEM LEAD LICKS ON THE GUITAR, THAT'S THE SHOWBUSTER...G.B. IS SIMPLY BADDASS...
NO DOUBT!...
Saw him in Adelaide about 10 years ago. Great show, better that I expected.
Gosh so far away !!!!! Benson does like to travel likely // I was in Perth Sidney ... Melbourne : took ages to reach ... that 😎great country !
Great.drummer player...amazing
This is the song that inspired me to get a buy a guitar and learn to play. Mostly now it is classical guitar. Toss in SRV and and "Little Wing" and I am a happy musician. George Benson is a class act....enjoy!
excellent, i would dream to attend such a concert
🎉❤Quando chegamos numa certa idade da vida, já não temos mais curiosidade com futuro e sim, saudades do passado!🎉
Magnificent, as only a Jazz Legend could.
Magnifique 🎉🎉🎉
Saw him at a concert, in Atlanta in 2004 at Chastain Park, loved it I've been a fan since the late 70s
Classic and still great music!😃💖🎤🎶🎸🎧😃
thank you for posting this ,because I'm a very big fan of George Benson
I am watching this video for the second time because the drum solo is extraordinary!!!! The musicians that perform with George have been with him for years and i have heard the drummer but never had pleasure of seeing up close
Another thing to pay attention to is George scatting i have heard that like Ella, he is very very skilled at this
Finally I just wanna say that I respect The G man as I call him. He suffered a stroke if I am.not mistaken, and made a full George. Benson is a giant in the industry and I encourage everyone to view Absolute Benson on utube.
@Robin Patrice good, and you?
@Robin Patrice im from Gainesville Fl. You?
@Robin Patrice i am, especially Bad Benson. Have seen him perform 11 times!!!
