  • SCRIMSHAW was born from the noble legacy of the rugged, sea-kindly Block Island Boat of the 1840’s. The Block Island Boat’s seaworthiness, great handling qualities, and the simplicity of the unstayed rig make her a natural for short-handed sailing. It has been said of this wide beamed double-ender that “her motion in a steep short sea is like a rocking chair. She never smashes into a head sea, but rides like a duck, and when on the wind she is always inching to windward, no matter how hard it blows.”
It's apparent that this is a truly unique vessel. I absolutely adore this 38' wooden vessel, but beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. What do you think? Leave a comment below.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

This is probably the coolest boat I have ever seen, besides the sailing barge, & the aluminum schooner that was owned by croc sandles. I almost bought the pinky schooner from Washington state. That sailboat had won an award for being the best sailing wooden sailboat in all of the Washington coast line. Double ended, full keel sailboats are without a doubt the best sailing sailboats in the world. No slamming, or jerking motions, just easy movement through the ocean. Like someone stated they are like an old rocking chair. My favorite sailboat are wooden sailboats that have been cold molded constructed with the epoxy west system. I'm also a fan of ketch sailboats with modern rigging, with electric or hydraulic winches, with manual backup.

The Canadians came out with a single masted non-stayed boat line called the "Nonsuch".
They have well thought out interiors. They start at 26 feet. The only p[problem is bridge clearance, the mast is close to twice the boat length to try to get more sail area. Check 'em out.

Love the boat, as I do most every sailboats for their uniqueness and ingenuity. The one thing that struck me the most was the impractictablility of the galley layout, especially that of the stove/oven arrangement. Undoubtedly the arrangement would be fantastic, if not ideal, for a boat moored in protective waters, but the most experienced motion when sailing blue waters is the rolling motion, for which makes this gallery, especially the stove improperly gimbaled for the rolling motion that is mostly prevalent, if not a constant while sailing open waters.
Just nitpicking, as this is a fantastic boat/yacht, and the other details which make this boat outstanding mostly eclipse the small details of which I'm complaining about as a captain aboard a Bandholm 35, spending what years are left to me as far as is practical not moored, but doing what I love best. And that's sailing every body of water that allows me to do so!
Hats off and kudos for those who share my aspirations: God bless, and fair winds to all of you, and perhaps we may meet in some sheltered harbor somewhere on this unique planet we call home! -E-

Nice to see you found a 5-figure asking price. You're definitely learning the meaning of affordable. One thing missing though: a 71 y/o wooden boat must have been rebuilt or extensive planking must have been replaced. It would be handy to know where, when, by whom and what type of wood was used.

This boat was donated to Orange Coast College, who in turn donated it to San Diego Maritime Museum. After a couple of weeks playing with her, The Museum will haul her out and re-fasten her bottom, and probably replace a few planks during that process. The idea is to sail her daily on shorter trips inside the bay with up to 6 passengers. I will post progress updates here.

Beautiful vessel but not something I'd personally not want to use as a live aboard cruiser. I'd love to see you guys do a full review of a Gemini Legacy 35, or even an older Gemini 105M/105MC. It's a boat I have been very seriously.considering for a long time because it puts you into a catamaran for relatively the same price range as 37-44 foot monohulls,.and with a beam of 14 feet it also fits in a standard slip, which avoids the double pricing per foot many marinas hit you with on the larger cats and trimarans.

That is one heavy-duty flush mechanism! It would be easy to bulkhead the chain locker and add a drain over board for to make the into a wet head with a shower.
Beautiful boat! And the price is fantastic!
Does the table drop for more berthing?
The other question is, does the ladder at the entry and bulkhead behind come out?
That would add a lot more access to the the engine.

If it's similar in the sense of unstayed, and two masts, that and the fact that you both seem to love cats (and why not, there's a lot to like about cats) leads me to only one possible alternative...... a Wharram Tiki 46 (if I remember correctly they do have shrouds, so maybe that doesn't count). Maybe not practical enough in terms of liveaboard space though.

I have never seen a helm station that required the operator to sit higher than the deck with only your feet in the cockpit. In bad weather, it would be very wet and at risk of being pounded by waves from the side.
Inside, I noticed a pocket door between the salon and the double berth room. Anyone sleeping in the salon would have to pass through the shared forward cabin. And there is no sitting on that double berth like on a settee. Probably the worst interior plan I have ever seen.
