  • Maggie Duff is a Edey and Duff built, Phil Bolger designed Bird of Dawning leeboard yawl. She's been converted to a Sloop under the direction of the designer. Her unique features include the hull design, the unstayed and tabernackled carbon mast, leeboards, and a transom-hung retractable rudder to name a few. You won't see many sailboats like this one, and that's why I think she's so special.
She's also relatively affordable for a vessel this size at an asking price of $50,000.
    What do you think?

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

My father had this boat built when he retired on a disability. He worked closely with Duff throughout the (tortuous) process. He and his wife sailed it in the Chesapeake and the Gulf for several years before docking in Florida when he could no longer handle it. I remember those lee boards could release outward as well as being hauled up aft. When it was a yawl it had along boomkin.

I just completed a binge watch of about 90% of your uploaded video's and have to say I wish you all the best. I was a bit disapointed with the direction of your channel as it is just not for me now.
What i liked was the couple diving into a project in this case a Sailboat and learning along the way, the struggles and the misfortune and hardships learning along the way and that is where you two started.
I would not be a fan to point out mistakes or methods in your journey learning the way you had to do things and calling you names about your skill or aparent cost or even timeline of some of the projects. Sure i found it entertaining watching a TEAM doing demolition and making decisions about how to do things on the boat. I expected mistakes and struggles as many other channels in the process dealt with the same, but from what I saw you shoudl be proud of all the work you did complete on the boat.
The letdown for me was to hear that you were giving up on the project all together. For sure I understand "Time and Cost" were the main factors in selling FREEBEE, but I just think of all the hard work and then simply letting it all go was a letdown for me. Even worse was the walkthrough and the unfinished projects on the boat were a realy disapointment for me. Half completed projects really says much about taking on a Refit of a Sailboat. The cost is great, the learning curve is for sure great and most of all the time it actually takes I'm sure is what breaks most people.
The reality is the channels that REFIT a Sailboat and are successfull are far and few success stories.
So what do I think of the direction your channel is going and is it for me? Well a channel dedicated to Sightseeing of reachable or mostly "Unreachable" Dream Boats is just not for me. I have watched a few of your walkthrough videos and it seemed that the research and expertise was a bit lacking and I found it a Floorplan/Look how many hidden storage areas there are on this boat video. Maybe a bit more information and creative Editing can make your videos better and more informative in the future. They are probably better already, but do not slack on this if you want quality. Overall I got the idea before you were to sell your free boat as you started doing these walkthroughs and the project videos or progress seemed to waiver, but I thought you were looking as a buyer and maybe you were at some point, then the videos started to look at boats not in many peoples budget's. It was clear in those videos that you were moving on from realistic videos and just like adverts and I found that borring.
Ok Long enough and I do wish you all the best. Yeah I think a NEW SEAWIND FAMILY CAT woudl be best for your family but I would not go smaller than a 1260.

The European Dutch bones of this vessel are very strong. Navigating inland waterways would necessitate the pivoting mast, shallow draught & leeboards. Lots of practicality below decks for extended cruising & river & canal voyages. Another commenter said something along the lines of a lot of boat in a small space.
*Edit: On another topic, tabernacle was said so many times in this video I couldn't help but think of a French Canadian friend of mine. One of his favourite curse words (mine too for that matter) is: "tabernac!" Said with a Quebecois accent of course.

None of the ports, even those in the galley, are of the opening kind. Same for the head. I didn't see any dorados anywhere. If it is raining or in active seas, the two deck hatches will be sealed. In following seas, the small stern ports in the aft cabin must be closed. This boat appears to have very, very limited ventilation.

I believe I have seen this design in a boat design book. I am a big fan of leeboards which are almost taboo. Shallow draft capability, no keel to rip off or damage, hanging out in clear non turbulent water what is not to like. My next boat that I build will have leeboards. I would buy this boat in a heartbeat.

Her underbody has a much finer entry than a barge. She should handle head seas and chop much better than a typical bluff, full ended barge. Big lee boards are not ideal for big seas off shore. That doesn't mean she couldn't make a passage, of course, to get to the next shallow cruising ground. The lee boards should only be needed when beating.

  • @roadboat9216

Thanks for the look at that unique boat. Pluses: fun, novel, very shoal draft, un-stayed tabernacle mast. Either of these latter 2 could mean the difference of have or not having a sailboat of this size. I also love the LaVac head (best head there is) and the Edson gallon a stroke manual bilge pump. And the engine access is soooooo important. All of us that has spent hours, days, years, twisted and bent over near impossible places to reach really appreciate this. Negatives:
Not sure on the robustness of the leeboards, quirky layout. (Where do you snuggle with your honey). And I take it that the only full standing headroom is the center cabin with galley and head? And do those nice ports in the main trunk cabin open?? Didn’t look like it. The specs said that it was airex cored construction. Just so that doesn’t include below the waterline, thats good. And I personally don’t like bow sprits as they “ punish” you in that you gain overall length in docking costs and difficulties in maneuvering in close quarters. If a pole like that rams another vessel with the entire mass of the boat on that one point, wow, a lot of damage. And it does cause heavier pitch moment ( hoppy horsing). But, its all a trade off.
If the ballast and leeboards are adequate it looks like it would sail well. Especially off the wind. Good waterline length and reduced wetted surface. Displacement to length ratio is 155, which puts it at least near the Ultra light category! And a sail area to displacement of 24.5. Very high! (Fast) And as to oceanworthyness, the capsize formula number on this boat is 1.54 which is excellent. Many serious ocean crossing boats today don’t do that well on this factor. Unique. Thanks again for the look.

@@roadboat9216 Boger was a great shoal draft designer and modeled a lot of his larger shallow draft cruisers after Thames barges, so it's nice to see somebody "get it." He knew leeboards backwards and forwards and if they're made to plan, they will be fine. And I trust Edey & Duff construction, having owned a Dovekie that was built like the proverbial s---house. That airex core is impervious to pretty much anything. I also built a sharpie to his design, Black Skimmer, that exceeded expectations and currently own a Bolger Micro, which I'm always slightly embarrassed by (not exactly a looker) but it sails amazingly well. So, anyway... this is his special wheelhouse, so to speak, and it looks to me like a phenomenal yawl.

Good looking boat for the price. It is not a Yawl, it is a Sloop and the mast setup is interesting but it claims too much space at the forward area of the boat. I would return it to a rigged keel stepped mast, would add the second mast to re make it a Yawl and add two good roller furled jibs at the bow. Of course, I would throw away the window AC and install a marine AC in the technical closet.

Made new interior new el new mecanic new portlights new sails new stering new bow thruster new outside painting. Name of the boat was Hagaard. Kenner boats was building great boats. Scooner rig is really easy to sail one person.

When the mast is stepped, how much rain or wave water runs down the mast into the bilge? When the mast is horizontally stowed, the square hatch does not seem to cover the semi-circular indent for the mast. Same question about rain/wave water. Where is the boom when the mast is horizontally stowed?

Massachusetts' boat builders Edey and Duff (Mait Edey and Peter Duff) should be recognized and remembered for the build quality of nearly 150 Stone Horse Sloops, dozens of Sakonnet 23, Fatty Knees Dingys and a few other "experimental" one-offs built from the late 1970's to the early 1990's. For accuracy, Edey and Duff Boats is pronounced E-D and Duff, not Ed-E and Duff.

What a cool boat. Always like a center line sink. Better when underway on either tack.
I feel like that aft tech room may have originally been designed as a bathroom. Kind of threw me a bit when I first saw it, as I was expecting a head.

    • @Garryck-1
      @Garryck-1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Going by what would seem to be the original plans ( sailboatdata.com/sailboat/bird-of-dawning ) the centerline sinks are not original, and would appear to be a modification made by the owner. Most of the galley has been altered, in fact. The aft tech room, on the other hand looks pretty much as it does in the plans, and seems to never have been a head/bathroom.

@@Garryck-1 I recently purchased the original Bird of Dawning and the sink is also on centerline and there is no room attached to the aft cabin. Instead, the "tech room" you see in this video is but open space in the engine compartment. My boat also has access to the chain locker through a forward bulkhead/hatchway.

Very busy. Be interesting to see a take on this using lithium ion solar heat pump Tesla AI tech...all traler-able and testable for power us by a Tesla Cybertruck of course. Already powerboat design is being revolutionized by a kind of *"fly by wire"* hydrofoil ("Candela") so how that might wind up being applied to under sail optioned motor yachting as not a one off but serial production matter give new meaning to the term *"hyper-miling"* would be an understatement.

An odd boat, but odd can be good sometimes! I wonder why he didn't just put a center board in the middle rather than the two wingy-dingies. Those little dog ears would make me nervous in rough seas. Did you ever find out what that little stainless smoke stack on deck was from?

The numbers inscribed into the bulkhead, for instance in this video above the water tank, that number is the USCG Documentation number and class; that information tells the potential buyer that it is a Documented vessel and when parked in another state there are no taxes due on said vessel being a USCG boat.
