Couple Living in a Beautiful Floating Home on a Peaceful River - Full Tour & How It Works

  • Jade and Tim decided to live on a float home because it was the perfect compromise between wanting to live close to nature and needing to live close to the city for work. Their home is a modern and minimalist black two-story home that sits on top of a floating foundation made with styrofoam encased in plywood. The home is 30' long x 20' wide, and the float is 40' long x 20' wide (the size of a standard float home slip).
    You can follow and find out more about Jade, Tim, and Yoggu Foods here:

    Their journey began 3 years ago while they were living together on a small trawler-style motorboat. Their moorage (marina rent) was at risk because any new float home arriving at the marina would have forced them out of their spot. So they hired a boat house (boat shed) builder to build a simple float home shell, and then they finished the interior with the help of friends and family (it helps that Tim is a plumber by trade).
    The result is a simple, peaceful, open-concept home that perfectly matches the peaceful river surroundings.
    But living on a float home isn't always easy and as the couple says in this video, it can be like the Wild West. Marinas don't have to follow the same rules as landlords on land, so there's little security when it comes to moorage, and there aren't many spaces available for float homes if they do need to find a new spot, like they did this year. Their original marina raised their moorage cost by 35% so they went looking for a new spot and were lucky to find one nearby.
    We hope you enjoy meeting this couple and checking out their floating home lifestyle!

    The hidden cost is they own home but have to pay rent for space at $1500.00 a month which can increase in price without notice. Also, they didn't quote the actual cost of house insurance which is probably expensive. Also, they mentioned other people being careless with their sewage. This mean unwanted odors on the river. The homes are a little too close for my taste. The plus side is that the home is beautiful inside. As the old saying goes, "Whatever floats your boat."

    I've thought for a while now that floating homes are an excellent idea. Especially considering how often areas are flooding these days, how widespread it has become and the experts saying it's not only here to stay but also only going to get worse not better as time goes on. Having a house that can adapt to the conditions better and stay above the flood level would be ideal. Floating homes and/or homes built on "stilts" I think is going to be the future for a _lot_ of places - I mean, we have to figure out _some_ way to live in the changing environment, we can't just abandon entire areas because they've started flooding far more often.

    • @moonfall8972
      @moonfall8972 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Disagree. Hurricanes & tropical storms & pollution and expense of getting a little space will preempt that.

    • @DavidStruveDesigns
      @DavidStruveDesigns 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@moonfall8972 Well, I didn't mean it's the ideal answer for _every_ situation or location. I was more referring to my own country here in the UK where flatter ground tends to flood a lot but there's far less risk of extreme storms (though these _are_ also becoming a lot more common in our country too). Pollution could be an issue for sure, but there's already ways to prevent that. I think the biggest thing right now is expense, but again that _should_ come down if floating homes become more common. Although I do like the idea of having houses on stilts as is done in other parts of the world, but again it's not a solution for every situation or location, and does pose a problem for accessibility.
      I'm just trying to think outside the box when it comes to how to deal with flooding, since fixing our aging sewage systems alone isn't the answer. (We really should have gone with the two-pipe system where rainwater isn't dumped into the sewage network, back in the Victoria era. We nearly had such a system but one rich asshole convinced everyone to go with the single-pipe option which we're now paying dearly for).

    This is a perfect home (not just a float home but for any home). I love the two levels. After living in two level, side-split (3 levels) and a ranch I definitely prefer a two story as it gives you privacy and change of scenery. As your on a connected septic/fresh water system I wonder if you could install a heating cable to the sewer and water lines that you could turn on only in the winter? The kitchen really is the focus of any gathering of family or friends so it is great to see that it is big, bright, and open. The positioning of the windows is brilliant if you like your privacy, which I do. Thank you for sharing a smartly designed and functional living space. ps: love your dog

    Really lovely home and incredible result for the price. Obviously they saved a lot on labor costs because of the work they or their friends/family did. If I understood her correctly, she mentioned that the material that they used to build their home, styrofoam, has a lifespan of about 30 years? If that is correct, then what do you do? That was unclear for me. But again, the home was really wonderful, and it's hard to beat the location.

Well done. And yeah, too bad about the rent. I think the goal for everybody, should be to purchase their own home, (spot), because landlords can’t be trusted with rents, the rents are getting ridiculous and ridiculous and more ridiculous.

    Holy smokes! $1500 just for moorage! This is no sensible investment or housing alternative, just a lifestyle choice. They will have very little equity on this thing when they decide to sell, and only equally well-to-do people seeking the same lifestyle will want to buy it. Mortgages on float homes are difficult and expensive, and you have moorage fees on top of it.
