Had one of these "Gifted" to me since the keys have long since disappeared so it seems. Got it open with some complaints but the serrations on the key pins looked similar to this and some worse. Key pin #5 in my lock didn't even have complete serrations around the circumference. Drivers were made correctly.
LockPickingLawyer aw man, I just ordered one of these from amazon. I was hoping for a challenge. it hasn't gotten here yet. if you want, I'll pick and gut it to see if this is still the case. lock picking lawyer, could you recommend an American lock series that would be a challenge, or possible sell me one of yours?
i can tell you the reason for that: that lock was at one point a US government issue lock. American more than likely made cheaper versions, or the defective ones, got given to the military (happens all the time with everything)
I must have got lucky. I bought one of these from a freight company that moved military equipment and sold their old locks without keys. All the pins look great, legit serrations
@@fixingitrightish whenever you might see this notification, what company, if you don't mind me asking? I just bought a lot of these with keys but keyed different for less than $5 a piece, I have some low-security applications that I can use em for but I'm always looking to learn as well
You say you use heavy tension as it gets locks open easier. If you switch to inferior lighter tension, on this particular lock, would that allow you to feel the serrations then?
I would rather have this U.S padlock then the one currently issued to our government now. Atleast this one has any security pins, an un-crimped core, and no bumpstop. Not to mention the current U.S issue 5200 has a cylinder that is made of a brass-zink mixture that looks and is cheap.
I have one of these with the worst buying I have ever seen in a lock. All of the pins are level with my standard hook pick, except for the back one, which I just raise slightly and the lock opens. I actually posted a video of me opening it. Is there a better core that I could swap out on the new 5200 lock, so I'm not stuck with a master lock core? If I can, what would be the most secure option that would fit? Also, how do I pick out the best security pins to re-key a lock and how do I get a key cut for the bitting I would like? Is there a place where I could just order a key with the bitting numbers and key type once I know how I want the key done?
Very interesting - like a defect in production. Guess that's a rare unique lock ;-) Where did you get it from? Ask the manufacturer to send you a new core. At least it would be fun to read the reply.
LOOL... right, I have a collectors' item. I got it in a package of 9 5200's on ebay, all from different production batches and very different ages... less than $3 each, including shipping!
Potti314 It was an odd package. Two of the locks were like this (with the same date code), and two of them were not 5200's at all -- they were Federal/Paclock 100G's. The video I'm posting in a few minutes with feature the 100G
There are old Master Locks with cadmium, an element that's seriously toxic, as opposed to chromium, which is an allegedly-essential micronutrient with toxicity in limited contexts.
So we use these and the Pacific Lock 100Gs all over work and I can't pick these at all. I just picked up a lockpick set after watching yours and bosnianbill's just so I could learn to pick these specifically and I'm not having any luck.
Three years later and the quality of American Lock continues its downward spiral unabated. The "US" stamped (military contract) 5200's now have zinc bible/outer cores. With the availability of these getting more and more restricted along with the proliferation of Masterlock brand extensions aimed at American Lock's typical clientele, you have to wonder how much longer Masterlock will keep making these knock-off-quality-at-full-price American Locks.
My father gave me a older key retaining version of this lock and I cannot figure out how to remove the core. I removed the retaining screw but the core won’t come out with the key still in. Any ideas? I don’t think the core is stuck due to age/rust.
I have two American 5200 locks Ive had for over 20 years and I cant pick them. I been trying for weeks, day after day. They work fine with the keys but I just cant pick them. I am getting very frustrated with them.
I will look for it now. But I ended up gutting the lock and it had all crazy pins. It was no wonder that a newbie like me had a very hard time. It was very hard but I put it all back together too. I made some special tweezers using my dremel and making small grooves at the tips so I could handle the pins. Im a 50 yr old guy that lives alone so after work I have LOTS of time to tinker. And I used a pick with a round tip to hold the pins down while inserting the keyway into the bible as You call it.
I hope its bad QA, but who knows. Pretty much all of the pro-series locks have one lightly serrated pin that reminds me of these. If memory serves, there was one of these in my recent video on the ML 911.
I have a bunch of these 5200 locks that are keyed the same but I don't have a key. Can you make a key from a lock. I took one unlocked lock to a locksmith and he said no. May have been beyond his ability. Can I send you a lock and make a key?
And I am pissed off - these locks are used by the DOD as part of their secure lock program. Masterlock is bilking the taxpayer. I get it, the locks won't stop a master thief but it should have at least slowed him down. This is disappointing to say the least.
Ok...we have to stop doing this....LOL...Tin foil hat time again...Just yesterday I shot almost the same video and am posting it tomorrow.....How freakin weird!!
I love these older videos.
I work in my county's public works department. Every single lock in the county is one of these. I hope they don't look like this on the inside
I work for a utility district. We have the same thing.

I have 4 of these. Just blew my mind when I rake them open.
Nowadays they havel all standards and non working bump pin.
@@sluzbazaorganizacijucentra4050 It's pretty sad. My brother is in the military and brought me 4 of them to play with a bit.
just seen another one of these from eBay that had a master core with a master key
Yup. I try to avoid them.

Aww. the AL 5200 I just got has the same garbage serrations on the drivers. :( Bummer.
I have one of these locks I use everyday.
Those serrations were painted on to save $

Here in the UK we Matlock padlocks which is the same as the American padlocks. Fun to pick.

I hope you washed your hands after touching that one

Is there a video where you explain the purpose of the serrations? just picked a 5200 with a Lishi and I could feel the serrations
Is that one of their models covered in that incredibly toxic chromium compound?

U need to start with something easier

@@androidkenobi yep, I also bought a key and rekeyed it. Now it secures my desk drawer at work 😆
Anyone know when Master Junk ruined these by swapping to a 5 pin copper core? Mine is the junk one and was made in June of 2014.
I think it was a mistake, but hopefully, we will not see more of such by Master inspired American Locks in the future. ;-)
Here's to hope, and to us, the fools clinging to it! ;-)
@@lockpickinglawyerthat sounds like a pretty epic toast.
these locks are commonly used in military applications
it must of been noob day at the factory
They're just drawn on!
What a shame. Master just keeps killing the rep of American lock. Feels like in a few more years Americans will all come with standard pins.
Agreed. Hopefully, we will not see too many of these in the future.
I'll tell you this my American 5260 absolutely does not have this problem it's got some nice bitting is giving me a rough time haha
Thats very odd, a bad batch of shenzhen pins perhaps, IDK. Thats unfortunate....

You are probably correct that it was a mistake... but a pretty damned big one.
Indeed!
nice shackle hole
Thanks, but that's private. :-P

What a dissapointment. I missread it as "Detective American Lock" and then this.

If not careful this lock will defeat a set of bolt cutters as well.
