That “shank” is tali’s boot knife! The developers enjoyed that small detail of her character model that has been present in every game and they really wanted an excuse for her to use it at least once. That stab with that knife at that juncture was actually a big “HELL YEAH!” for the teams working on Tali’s arch. I can’t remember where on TH-cam I heard it, but it’s a cool story if you can find it.

Also, Tali stabbing Legion in the back has value if you take into acount that she, as an admiral, tried to avoid a war with the Geth and was open with Shepard and Legion about her friendship with the latter.

Yes, and as a quarian tali knows exactly where to stab legion to instantly deactivate him, much more efficient than using her shotgun and much safer for shepard (as he’s also very close, and it’s a shotgun)

In regards to the car ride in Garrus's loyalty mission, I always find it extra funny if the extra squadmate in the car is Thane. Like it's Garrus and Shepard discussing taking out Sidonis, meanwhile the literal master assassin is just chilling in the back seat saying nothing

Tali keeps a knife on her boot, which explains where the knife came from. But as for why she uses it, I think it’s more symbolic of legion being stabbed in the back by those he called friends. This means less when raan i the one that does it because raan and legion are acquaintances at best.

To be fair the only squadmate in ME2 gameplay that can stand up to a YMIR mech for more than a few seconds without cover like Jack does in the cutscene, is Grunt once you give him Fortification.
Garrus can do some damage from longer ranges, but overall most squadmates don't last long without the player managing the mech's aggression. Grunt is just built different though, and he's my favorite squadmate for the Long Walk sequence for that reason.

Well those nerfed biotics, especially in ME2 gameplay, were not a smart move after all. You really have to "work" your way through the game as an adept on insanity. I can't even lift a Husk? What are you trying to tell me game? While in ME1 you were that Biotic God who lifts anything.
I think they should have utilized the difference between Barriers and Shields for the gameplay. While barriers protect against biotics, shields protect against tech.
While Overload shouldn't have any effect on barriers, Warp shouldn't do anything against shields(which is mostly the case for warp with the actual gameplay, making it really unbalanced and difficult for an Adept).
With these barrier/shield mechanics, there is no real need for armor(grounded targets) and the different classes could shine more in the game.

as for the #9 entry, we can see at the start of the ME2, that there is forcefield just behind the cockpit, so Joker doesn't technically need helmet. We could assume that ship has several forcefields acting as emergency bulkheads for breaches. Funny thing about ME2 is though, if you look closely, you can see that forward escape pod is behind the forcefield, so Joker has to walk through vacuum for a while. as the Expanse has shown, it can be done, but I bet it still stings

    • @dweller132
      @dweller132 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

And if we're going by book lore, the shields aren't really hard to overwhelm. The only thing that doesn't make sense is some characters, like Ashley/Kaiden NOT having their shields active while protecting the Council. The Codex states that the shields generate just enough of a mass effect field that it's possible to sit down in a chair without it moving away, so it would have been possible for Ashley/Kaiden to have them already active without harming the Council. Though I do think, considering the attire of some characters, that some choose not to wear any hefty armor or shields for improved mobility. Thane would be a good example, as armor/shields may slow down his speed regarding martial arts and the quick getaways he'd need to make given his assassin work. As opposed to Garrus or James, who are more militaristic and used to wearing armor and shields.
Also, I found the excerpt regarding shields/kinetic barriers: "Kinetic barriers are repulsive mass effect fields projected from tiny emitters. These shields safely deflect small objects traveling at rapid velocities. This affords protection from bullets and other dangerous projectiles, but still allows the user to sit down without knocking away their chair."

Besides there were the reports from Miranda to TIM and that Liara and Shep took someone from the SR2 squad with them for that mission, so everyone in the Normandy should know who the new SB was. By the time i played ME3, i had played both ME1 and 2 to 100% several times, and knew pretty much everyones names at that point, so when Anderson just casually drops the line about what Cerberus did to "You (Shepard) and Grayson", i thought i had missed seeing the name somewhere throughout several playthroughs, and it makes absolutely ZERO sense that either a player who hasn't read the books, or even Shepard themselves would have any idea who Grayson is! Grayson was a Cerberus operative who went rogue...
It's just so weird to me that they would use a name and plot point from the books as the basis for the Cerberus implants in ME3, when they could just have used the pieces of Sovereign and the Collector base to develope them, instead of using a plot from a book that only a tiny amount of players would have read...

I assumed Tail's knife was something she quickly fabricted with her Omni tool, because her tool is active in the clip. You can see Cortez doing something similar when he's working on the Kodiak's thrusters in the shuttle bay. With regards to the Normandy not depressurising, in the final scene of ME2, Shepherd looks out of a hull breech in the hanger bay, which seems to be protected by a kinetic barrier. The last point about shields is why any scifi writer should be hesitant about adding that level of defensive technology to their universe. It makes quick kills break internal logic for the sake of expediency and/or plot. Like starship shields suddenly not protecting ships in Deep Space Nine whenever its a big battle.

5:57 Um Tali always has a dagger in a sheath located on her right leg, it's there in all 3 games and that moment is the only time you will see her use it. Surprised you didn't notice that one. Geth weaponry uses Plasma other than the shotgun and SMG which has it in its name the assault rifle and sniper rifle do as well which probably screws with shields more than other weapons used in the galaxy. The first game they had not encounted the Geth until Eden Prime and the shields were not designed to withstand Geth Weaponry hits. Mass Effect 2 and 3 they developed shields with those weapons in mind.

I've totally seen all of these before, but it's nice to see someone else witness them too! Strangely enough though, I've played through moments in the original trilogy where I've killed off Wrex in ME 1 and didn't recruit Garrus & Tali and ACTUALLY managed to only have Tali with me on the Virmire mission. Plus, I've had Mordin die on me in ME 2 during the final mission without getting his loyalty, but he's alive on the ship and able to do his loyalty mission afterwards; unfortunately, the records will show him as dead in ME 2 & ME 3.

I saw on a reddit post that apparently if you revive a fallen squad member with unity while Harbinger is "assuming direct control" of a nearby collector, it'll have unique comments for each member/race. I think that could make for great content for another "Things you probably didn't know video. " I know I haven't heard them in my countless playthroughs.

I don't get your point about the Normandy getting damaged and getting spaced point
The Normandy took far more damage in the opening of ME2 rather than the collector base attack where you don't upgrade any ship stuff, so it stands to reason the ship in the lather scenario could use some shields to patch some holes and leave the life support systems in the cockpit functioning, rather than the former scenario where half the roof of the Normandy is missing...

IIRC, there is a codex entry in ME1 that describes spaceship combat, and it mentions something like "The scenes in movies of people holding onto something to prevent being sucked into space when there is a hull rupture are pure fiction. Either the hole is big enough to be instantaneous, or small enough to be immediately patched by damage control systems." (I'm paraphrasing)
Also, the shield thing is probably just for narrative ease. I wouldn't want to watch poor Jenkins getting shot for an additional 10 seconds to wear down his shields, lol

Anyone with two brain cells can see that Ashley is pushing Liara out of harms way. And if you’ve been paying any attention, you’ll notice that Ashley changes over the course of the games. She had her reasons to not trust the aliens in ME1. She then sees them as family and mates in the 3rd gane. It’s called character growth. Google it. 1. Liara and Shepard were the first to find the SB Ship but that means other could do it too or were close who knows.
    2. She putting all efforts on the war meant she couldn't keep her secret as well as previous SB. Liara keeping tabs and helping the crucible narrows the possibilities of who could be the SB

I might have an answer for number 9: Cerberus knows how the sr1 was destroyed, so they will have built the sr2 with that in mind. But as Gabby and Ken point out, they don’t care much for the safety of individual crew mates, as long as the entire ship doesn’t blow up. So if you don’t upgrade, the ship does the bare minimum to withstand the blast, and someone dies.

Regarding the shields point, here's my theory:
The shield boost skill in mass effect 1 implies that shields can be actively turned on and off. The one you used to emphasise the pistol had Ashley, a former member of Shepard's crew. It's likely she didn't think that Shepard would actually shoot her, hence the reason why the shield didn't block the shot. She didn't activate it

The Liara "shove" was hardly a shove. At this point in ME3 she really isn't xenophobic. During dialog in ME2A, she exclaims something along the lines of "I might not love aliens, but cerberus takes it too far." She very clearly becomes more open to the idea, and by ME3 it could very easily be argued she has, at least, a neutral disposition towards alien or at most, a friendly one, depending how dialog had with shep

It seems like characters almost never have armor or shields in cutscenes. For example, there are numerous times where you see krogan (who are supposed to be incredibly tough) go down from a single pistol shot in a cutscene. One exception is on Virmire, when Shepard tries to shoot Saren and it bounces off his shields.

Legion held Shepard in front of him, but Tali stood behind his back. So any use of firearm could hurt or even kill Shepard as collateral damage, since bullets could possibly get through Legion right into Shepard. So use of cold weapon, especially when she had a chance of attack from the back, was simply the best solution.
PS. Regarding, where shank came from. I'm replaying ME2 right now, and in Tali loyalty mission Shepard asks Tali about delivered parts from Haestrom - (something like) How do you managed to get these parts from Haestrom, it was warzone? To which Tali replies - that their suits have more pockets, than Shepard can imagine (thou it doesn't sound legitimate, because those suits are wery snug)

Of course, TIM would know Cerberus gave Shepard the info on where to track the Shadow Broker down and in turn he/she gave it to Liara. TIM did this to plug a data leak on Cerberus, probably linked to the Cerberus mission in Mass Effect 1. But I doubt he released the info without knowing what it was but gave it to Liara so she would do their dirty work for them. But was unable to seize the Shadow Broker's ship and equipment within as Liara took off with it and sent the ship on a collision course with their cruiser. But most of the squadmates and former squadmates keep it to themselves for her safety.
