- In 2008, a series of updates lined up like dominos - only to be tipped over by a fake screenshot. The community had been tricked and Jagex couldn't calm down the rumors which originated from the largest hoax in RuneScape history: Sailing.

Glad I could be a part! We never planned for the hoax to grow to this extent, and it was entirely by accident, but now we can just look back and smile on good memories. :)

People can say anything they want about RuneScape, but one thing will always remain true. Our fondest memories come from the absurd stuff we did back in 2006-2008. There's good memories like this one, there's bad ones like the Falador Massacre, there's sad ones like the Removal of the Wilderness and there's the controversial ones that came from EOC and MTX.
I just can't say a game other than runescape has given me so many emotional rollecoasters, and every single one of them is as memorable as the next one. With that being said, i'm glad i got to watch this video today and see your comment on this fun little piece of history!
If we ever get sailing (lol) i'll name my boat after you my dude :)

I always assumed Player owned ports just was sailing it would be weird having both in game
It would feel weird, but they have already done something similar with Archaeology. I just did the Dig Site quest recently after Archaeology's release, and it felt really weird because during the quest you are basically doing Archaeology, but the quest was made before Archaeology's release so all the digging you did gave mining XP instead.
They never reworked this after Archaeology came out, so you have this separate quest and activity you can do which is the same thing, but unrelated to the new skill.
If you switch letters in Qwertysumo around, it translates to "Sailing". Guess Sailing is coming afterall.

Hey Will, a quick note on the different cannonballs. Although the items themselves aren't in the game, the models were used in a Quest from 2005, called Between a Rock... where you see piles of different styles of cannonballs and even help make a golden cannonball in the quest!
True! They're not physical items though, which creates the question about what they're doing on quick-chat, considering a J-mod must've added those manually...
@@rswillmissit clearly left overs from the designing of the quest the quest probably was at one point intended to have you craft each ball type to test but since that would be boring they changed it

I remember that "Sailing" website banner. That was a throwback.
The 2008 financial crisis was caused by a flood of people back to the work force after they quit runescape.
As an OSRS player since 2006 and haven’t played in 4 years watching these videos are always great… OSRS was a huge part of all our lives for many years and it’ll always be apart of us.
I am surprised they haven't actually made sailing a thing yet to be honest. It just seems like a very runescape skill ya know
They tried, it was over 60% completed too but dumbass people tanked the poll.
its not as easy as you think, its not just about being able to sail,but being able to fight, repair, board etc... there is a lot of thing to add in the game only for this skill to even have a tiny ray of hope of existing

-Tying ropes for a captain/crewmate of a pre-existing npc crew.
-Moving barrels or containers
-Bringing specialty items brought back from voyages to other crewmates
-Crafting fishing equipment/nets
-Messenger-quests

Imagine building your own boat for construction and sailing XP, to travel out to explore new islands and kill monsters at sea! Manage your ship, make it look cool with cometics you unlock along the way during voyages... Imagine a mix between Player Owned Ports and Dungeoneering... but actually at sea :D

I remember listening to some interview with a Jmod on the old RuneShark channel where the mod discussed how they perceived all the players constantly looking for sailing clues. Was quite funny, but I think the video is gone now

I remember waiting for the sailing skill and we got a unnecessary canoeing transportation instead 😅😅 to this day I'm convinced canoeing was inspired by the prank of sailing 😅😅
I’d like to point out there was a brief period Zezima was number 1 for a little bit during the divination release
The reason they never added sailing simply because they can't make the code work in their game. All major instances of boats moving in the game are done in cutscenes. The game relies on instances that are unique to each player, I can't see how they would ever be able to add in sailing, where you could visually see other players and constantly-updating scenery.
OSRS was at its peak right before the combat update. I miss the summoning and dungeoning skill. And sitting etc

In rs3's gower's quest you actually get to train unreleased skills, one of which is sailing btw.

I haven't played since I was a kid, but I literally remember training sailing with my cousin. It must have been a really convincing rumor for me to even have a false memory of it.
It was briefly added as an April Fools' joke, but you couldn't actually level it past a certain point.

I’d enjoy having a quest locked skill. Like lock it behind all of the pirate quests. But, with ports, that’s not gonna happen. Lol.

Let's be honest, We were all dissapointed that Sailing were not added to the game :( Imagine how much you could make with that content, Sailing to boss areas or clue scrolls.

Sailing was already somewhat of a meme at that point, so to claim that that's when it started is just incorrect
