It's a running joke that CIG is always making ships much bigger than they were conceptualized... I love how they tied that into the lore of the Idris 😂
I would love to see a video that would explain all existing ship classes that are present in the game, what are their roles, what were the first ships of those classes, why they exist etc.
Ship classes in Star Citizen are a bit of a mess and have been changed and redefined over time. Its mightn't be an easy task to try explain them in a video.
Yea like if the hh is a corvette, and the 890 is the smallest capship, what is the Carrack? Corvette or subcap? And then what is the Reclaimer? So messed up.
@@bsquaredbundles Historically carracks were exploration, cargo runners, and were sometimes impressed as light warships. Hammerheads are corvettes in role, as they are fleet escort craft. In theory the Polaris would also qualify as this, though it's really more of a really large WWII era torpedo-boat or maybe an escort destroyer. The Javelin is more like a modern destroyer, or possibly a light cruiser. The problem, of course, is that the square cube law and the nature of space combat basically renders alot of the basic wet navy designations unreliable at best. Afterall, a Star Destroyer is a cruiser in role, but is both a battleship and carrier in terms of capability.
Wow, this video was fascinating and actually made we want a Polaris. To have a piece of that history. Well done. I didn’t realize how much more connected you can feel to a ship if you knew it’s history. …. And I bought one
The ship that will one day be my base of operations. Originally i chose this based on the concept design, but the redesign, has got me even more drawn to it.
Fun thing about these small hangars in ships like Polaris, 890, Javelin and so on is that Snub fighters allow you to toss a sizable chunk of your crew into micro fighters as needed.
I love the emphasis of Torpedoes (for larger targets), Speed (one of, if not the fastest Corvette sized ship), and it's self-sustainability to act as a Forward Operating Base.
Great lore vid! I picked mine up in the first wave of the very first concept sale for her (LTI and all) They had me at 'the fastest of all capital ships'.
Great content! I love watching these types of videos and learning more about Star Citizens history and lore. Excellent organization and presentation! The Polaris is going to be a great ship. I can't wait to see it in game.
This thing needs to release already. Let me cruise around in my corvette like I’m a Star Wars diplomat or senator. The carrack will have to do for now. Great video as per usual
CCU'd my LTI BMM to a Polaris a few days ago and im probably being optimistic by saying this but im hoping its another 13-18 months when we see this beast flyable
Man there's some excellent SC content that's been coming out of late and this is certainly one of them. Knowing a bit more of the lore made me even more excited to finally fly mine.
In the most recent SCL, they stated that the concept phase for the ship is complete and that the Polaris is slotted to go into production as one of the next ships! :D
As already said. The Production schould habe already started by now. And it will be done in the near future because the need the Assets for the Perseus/Galaxy Production. So its not unlikely, that we will have a flightready Polaris next year :))
Man...I've been waiting for you to make a video on the Polaris almost the same time I've been waiting for it to come out! Damnit; I owe you a $1 now......
So for SC the ship sizes are Fighter < Sub Cap < Corvette < Frigate < Dessie < ?????? < Bengal? The S7 guns are expected to have the tracking and precision to hit subcaps (but not fighters) with the highest possible power, while S8+ (guns, not missiles/torps)are pretty restricted to hitting capitals? And the vast majority of current flight ready ships are sub-caps? The 890J is a Corvette-sized Yaht then? Does that make the Carrack and Reclaimer the largest subcaps?
@@Grimson87 Well the production start is next month or already this week. They said in the last SCL, that they will produce and finish the Polaris "soon" to get the assets for the Polaris and Perseus. Its not that unlikely, that we will see the flightready Polaris next year. Hopefully they wont BMM my beloved Polaris, but for now, thats the official info.
The Polaris is the closest thing to my perfect ship until they have a corvette sized E-war or AWACS ship (which the Polaris already has the largest radar in game) and the hangar bay/ brig just adds to the versatility. Funny enough IMO the Torpedo tubes seem almost secondary to what I think it will be used best as, but they're good insurance.
I really wish they make some sort of solutions to use the turrets without fully crewing each one, as even the lore of the ship says it is supposed to be able to run with a very small crew. And I don't mean that the pilot should have all the guns under control. I mean like if you fly this ship with 3-4 people, I'd like it if you could have a system like in the reclaimer. Where the turret operator can essentially control one turret POV, and multiple turrets on the same side of ship are synced to fire at the same target. So you could have a front/rear gunner setup, or a top/bot setup. That or, a more revolutionary setup with one gun officer that could just paint targets for AI blades etc, which would fire at the targets with mixed results. But being able to somehow use all the turrets to some limited capacity, even with just one or two people responsible. That would be enough to just about cover the ship against NPC fighter ships. And you would still need a pilot, an engineer (when that gameplay comes online), and a torpedo operator. Bare minimum. No idea if you need a manual loader for the torps after 4 has been fired. Would also be an interesting role for crew. And you can have one fighter pilot too. So considering there are so many interesting roles to fill on this ship, it would be a shame if there was no way to make the turrets do a limited amount of stuff even without full crew manning every single one. That should be more reserved for the Javelins of the game, where the turrets are so big that they get exciting to just think about.
I think that it is absolutely necessary for all existing crewed turrets to be converted to remote turrets and allow any gunner station (dedicated or co-pilot, as appropriate for the ship) to select and control any 2 of the ship’s turrets. I’d even support Capital ships allowing for control of up to 4 turrets. More, I think precision mode should be made an exclusive bonus for crewed turrets and select specialist one seaters (like the Ares twins), and finally we need a dedicated anti-fighter weapon (flak! Omg just add flak ffs-lowest dps of any same size weapon, but aoe proximity damage for splashing onto fighters) exclusive to crewed turrets. Until the actual human experience of crewing ships is vaguely comparable to that of simply flying another copy of the ship, we will forever see these massive ships empty and flown solo. Worse, we’ll never get to see most them actually doing their functions. Hammerheads will never escort a Polaris if the HH simply can’t hit fighters, and can’t find people to crew the guns it’s missing with. It’s not a coincidence that one of the only common uses of larger ships right now is to just carry snubs-actually crewing the large ship is pointless, so it’s better to use it to deliver the maximum number of ships.
Yup, gonna be my daily drive. Sometimes, those frontier outposts just don’t have the parking space for my Bengal I, um, ... found. So yeah, the Polaris is perfect for doing these beginner missions, every newcomer should buy one right now.
Ah so lore wise they are in military service but not civilian? I wish they would have a couple in game like the Idris as part of the Bangal escort fleet.
Well that's because CIG hasn't finished the models in game yet. I'm sure people would be screaming bloody murder if the Polaris showed up at Invictus before it showed up in their hangars.
Since the Idris the ships had only gotten bigger, the Javelin was the first ship to step back from bloated ships like the Indefatgatable Class Battleship. It was not only smaller but faster and modular than anything outside of the Idris and was much more modern than the Idris.
I don't own the Ares Ion. But if the Polaris is too good. It will get nerfed, unjustly. If you have the disposable income, get it now. It will have a price increase. But if the ship becomes dog water once it hits the verse due to being nerfed in the PTU -- Melt it.
my theory is that the ship will be one-shot-able due to the way torpedoes / bombs work in star citizen currently. You see the Bomb / Torpedo being fired, you can shoot it down immediately, causing an explosion that damages the bomber that launched it. Most of the Time killing it instantly. It's very easy and enjoyable to do. :) but if I was a Polaris owner, I would cry LOL
