Yes! I keep arguing with people over which real world aircraft influenced which Star Citizen ships. Gladius = F16, Hornet = F15, Sabre = F14, Eclipse = B2 Spirit, Retaliator = B1 Lancer. It's obvious right?
@@pirateradio8420 Wouldn't the Sabre be more the equivalent of the F-22? Even in lore it's designated as a stealth fighter. And Hornet = F/A-18 Hornet, right? They're both primarily carrier based fighters
It's worth noting that the original Gladius fighters actually didn't have quantum drives and had limited range, acting more like snub ships with shields. The Mk2 (or Mk3, I forgot) Gladius added a quantum drive and associated fuel tank, hence why the Gladius ingame has the weird extension under it's belly. That little thing that holds components and fuel is supposed to be the Mk2 upgrade package containing a quantum travel system.
Interesting, do you have a source for this information? I saw nothing about the early versions not having quantum, I did see they didn't have Jump Drives.
Until recently, the Gladius was the only ship I could clear Pirate Swarm solo with. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts. I fly a Hornet or the F8C mostly, but I appreciate the Gladius for what she can do.

I'd love it if cloud imperium, made a game during the tevarin war after squadron 42. I can imagine being a pilot flying these old, bulky, slow fighters with no shields and seeing a talon or prowler in those old ships. Just the speed and agility of something close to what we have now paired with shields. It would make the player look at tevarin ships in a whole new ptsd kind of light. Then, seeing the massive leap in tech from the stelleto to an old version of the tali or gladius. I could see the story being a military campaign in the first half then like an "enemy mine" or "last samuri" second half. Where you crash and get stranded with a tevarin pilot. Then, towards the end, flee to bremen or nyx
I finally decided to try flying a fighter after having some fun in a friend's titan. (I started with a cutlass so kinda skipped right past the smaller ships) i hopped in arena commander and tried a few of them, and man the gladius was just love at first fly for sure.
Visually and without lore videos I would say the hornet is the ancient fighter and the gladius is the upgrade as it has a similar design language as the f8. Cig.... no one said they knew how to name or date things well.
@@heathmorris6100 there a few reasons it actually makes a lot of sense. 1. Gladius is old and been easily retrofitted for longer ranges by adding a center underslung fuel pod (just like older irl jets) 2. External Fuel pod is easier to keep cool, space is -270°c. Star Citizen ships use hydrogen as fuel, presumably being stored as liquid hydrogen which needs to be kept below -250°c to stay liquidadet 3. The quantum drives gets very hot so that being external also helps with cooling. It's in-game compartment is too the rear of the pod 4. The in-game refuelling port is behind a little door on the rear of the pod for easier/quicker ground crew refueling (this is a jet meant to be scrambled off a carrier so easy access is important) 5. The gladius is extremely thin even compared to other light fighters, the wings and main fuselage don't have the space to carry much fuel aswell as stuff like oxygen tanks etc The radar/avionics is underneath the cockpit, computers in the center of the main body behind the cockpit canopy and life support is on the top inbetween the engines :)

@LK32019 you're missing a lot of information. Irl jets use fuel pods because they can be jettisoned to prevent parasitic drag during a fight and the only effective way to cool something in space is through radiation which is not really possible from inside an armored compartment. Also I wasn't saying it should house components like radars and whatnot I was just saying it doesn't make sense to design it that way regardless of what's inside. Realistically it would make more sense to keep the fuel tanks in the wings (like real world aircraft) to avoid wasted space and added weight and complexity
