Don't Make this Mistake with your Shimano Deore M5120 Derailleur / 2021 Trek Marlin 7 / Clutch

- I took my 2021 Trek Marlin 7 out for its first ride and the chain had fallen off. Then it skipped gears once or twice, but it was something easily solved on my Shimano Deore M5120 Derailleur, and something I should have checked before even taking it for a ride. Check out this video to see the clutch lever on the Shimano Deore M5120 that comes on the 2021 Trek Marlin 7.

I would highly recommend also checking the derailleur setup. I bought a very slightly used Trance X 29, where the previous owner may have never put the clutch on. Worse, the B screw had never been set, and the H and L screws were also incorrectly set.
welcome to mtb where price is skyrocket
Bro...I was going nuts for the passed two days. New bike but whenever I was riding hard in the high gears, something undefinable happened. Something "snapped" back, sometimes very hard. Happened when I was padelling very hard and stopped to roll. I DIDNT EVEN KNOW WHAT TO GOOGLE. At some point I realized it was the chain that got lose and back to tension, which causes this snappy feeling. BUT I STILL DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO GOOGLE. I tried for hours to find someone having this issue, to get a solution. Then at some point I read something about "clutch". Turns out, it was off and this was the only problem to all this.
I got on it by your video, im just here cause im so happy it was just this.
Thanks for the shout out really appreciate it. Feel famous now 😂😂😂😂😂. Enjoy the bike did abit of riding & i enjoyed mine. I also subscribed to your channel. Thanks once again
Your reply immediately fixed all my frustration with my chain. Thanks for replying and pointing me in the right direction.
@@DadTechTV I enjoyed your videos. I watch alot of bike videos & pick from everybody else lol
You have no idea how many people's frustrations you've solved here. You're a hero my man
For all of you wanting a marlin 7 I got one of the first in production 2021 in the same deep blue color, and I have had many issues with it, the hubs become rough easily and the BOTTOM BRACKET HAS A LOT OF PLAY IN IT I have had mine for over 6 months and just purchased a title st1 35 mm stem, race face bars, and odi lock ons. I will update the comment if I remember when I get it back from the shop and tell you how it feels.
Always good to hear everyone's experiences so please keep us updated.
I need to have a look at the new model of trek marlin 7 didn't see it yet, had same problem with mine it was a 2018 model I changed the wheels and the bottom bracket absolutely dirt not even a bit of grease on the b bracket, was rusty, rear hubs making noice, didn't even made a complaint to their website that's the problem if every one makes complaints they might put better things on the bikes !!
Same thing happened to me. Just got a gem 2 Marlin 7 and took it to the ocean for the weekend. It kept skipping in the second gear to lowest. I thought it needed adjustment but it was the clutch on the derailleur
thank you. Good to know. I've just bought one of these.
Great video and advice. I just bought a 11T/46T sprocket and my current derailleur doesn’t work with it. The M5120 is compatible so need to order one.
5120 rear derailleur can be used with 2x10 (11-42 casette), 1x10 (11-42 or 11-46 casette) or 1x11 (11-42 or 11-46 casette)
Chain need to be HG-X 10 speed (CN-HG95, CN-HG54)
Or
HG-X11 11 speed
Now I Know what the switch is gonna to use.. thanks Bro, it's solve my courage
Glad to hear the video helped!
This video just saved my bike! I was having some of the same issues now I switched this much smoother
Glad it helped. That little switch makes a world of difference
I have the deore shadow + on my 2022 full suspension trail bike and i use the clutch "on" when im on the trails and i have it "off" whem im just riding around town etc... it works great ive never had and issue with it.
My bike was fresh from upgrade, my dealer didn't flip the lever to the on position. Chain wouldn't stay on, chain twisted under the strain of my 750W Bafang.
sorry to hear that. Hopefully they work it out for you.
Oh Snap! Me too! Same model... I’m on it! Cheers from Oz 🍺
Holy Bat Vids!! This....Wow, thanks man!! I had no clue what this thing was for!
Glad I could help!
I have the same bike and did not know that. Thank you
OMG. I did the same thing just today hoping to end my woes. And I guess I was right looking at your video. Thank You so much. Somehow, the internet has very little information regarding this issue. I recently bought a Marlin 6 2022 with a similar setup. The chain started slipping after a few rides. The local dealer couldn't figure out the reason. He actually advised me to replace the chain and cassette. I didn't believe him. Another technician said he replaced my smallest cog and it would solve the problem. Paid him (although I am sure he did nothing). I even asked him if its due to the clutch. He advised me to keep it off. Problem persisted. I just trusted my instinct to switch it on this morning and had a great problem free ride. And now your video says it all. Thanks again
also flip it off if your chain comes off and you need to get it back on the gear. Found that out this week after that plastic thing came off mid ride and bumped my chain off.
I cut my plastic thing off. Seems like a lot of people are having issues with it coming loose and causing issues.
thanks alot ! didnt know that, im brand new into mtb. was just checking up on what to do before hitting the trails.
it made a world of difference for me. hope it helps you out!
Merci ! Cette vidéo a sauvé mes sorties !
Glad it helped!
thanks, I didn't know about this, made a big difference
Glad this video helped! Thanks.
Thank you.
my dealer explained none of this to me. also new to biking with an M6. I think I need to adjust the deraileur, it has gottan hard to shift in the higher gears.
Make sure to download the documents for each component from the manufacturer of that component. They will help with any adjustments you want to do.
If you take the cap off I believe you can actually adjust the friction of the clutch to your preference (mostly for full suspension mountain bikes)
Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look into that.
I watched your video prior to buying my new bike. I just got delivery of a new Kona Dr Dew 12 speed Deore and has the same lever and set to off. The shop told me to put it ON ie tension the chain only when rough area and offroad otherwise leave it OFF position. You are saying leave it on all the time.??
The info I provided here came straight from the manual and I believe it’s still properly linked in the description if you want to take a look. Says to leave it on unless doing maintenance on the bike. But that’s just based on the manual.
Mines on order until April cant wait
April seems far out, but worth the wait!
I was wondering what that was for. I'm glad I looked it up
Glad it helped!
Thanks for telling us, also new here.
OMG thaank you so much i just got my new bike vitus nucleus 27 vrs and it come with that shifter. i thaught that the shifter is just bad but know i get it thank you so much and i am new to mtb too so yh
Glad it helped!
@@DadTechTV damn this video came out like 1 year ago and you still reply your a legend
We call it clutch system 🙂🙂🙂.
My brand new Cube Touring has the same derailler as presented. I had my chain dropping from the front blade every once in a while without any obvious reason. After 2 unsuccesfull bike repair shops the third spotted immediately the wrong lever position. By switching the lever. the chain tension is increased. The chain did not drop since. Thanks a lot for your info.
It made a huge difference for me, so I'm sure you will be much happier riding now. Glad the bike shop noticed it for you.
just surprised that no one in the comments seems to know this
Hi, I'm new to switch gear bikes and I just bought a bike with this same Shimano Derailleur, so I have a question: Could you ride with the clutch disengaged, say you only ride paved, smooth roads, would the pedaling resistance be less with the chain being less under tension? Or is my thinking wrong here? Or is it not recommended to ride without the clutch at all?
I'll just say that the documentation from Shimano says to leave it on except when doing maintenance, however it seems like a lot of people ride with it off, whether they realize it or not. I don't notice a difference as far as pedaling, only notice that the chain falls off when riding off a curb sometimes with it off.
Thank you you help me out. I bought my bike today and it was down. I was doing a quick search on my derailer you would’ve thought the shop would’ve done it when they put it together
Glad it helped!
Thanks a lot! This video saved my a lot of grey hairs! :)
Glad it helped!!
Dude, I’m riding the same bike from few weeks and feel there’s something wrong in the shifting ( very noisy) I took it to bike shop twice and they said nothing wrong..after I locked things change dramatically...thanks
Glad the video helped. It’s been a great bike!
thanks for the video u solved my problem
Glad to hear it helped!
That was the problem on my wife's bike. Saved her a trip to the bike shop
Glad to hear the video saved you a trip.
This switch needs a warning sticker on it! I rode my brand new Nukeproof Scout for 10 minutes. I had checked everything. Read all the instructions not new to bikes but I am new to the 1x drivetrains. I went over a few bumps, chain came off the front sprocket and locked everything up which sent me over the handlebars. Cost me a new chain bc the original was twisted to hell and back.
Can’t even tell you how many people I have heard from after I posted this video that had an issue. Sorry to hear this screwed up your chain and caused a fall. Hope all is well now that you got it flipped.
@@DadTechTV Thanks man! Yeah no real injury and the bike is amazing now. Your video should be included with every bike that is sold with this derailleur on it. LOL!
Man... I'm new too and I made that exact same mistake
Edit: I'm riding GT Avalanche Elite
Wow - many thanks for this - I have exactly same thing on a newly delivered cube nature 635 2021 - just pushed the lever up and hope it works
Hope it helps. Keep me updated!!
Is it just fine to change gear while the clatch is on?
Yes it’s fine
Thank you
I have slx and it’s much better when it’s on
Last 5 bikes I had sram gx nx so didn’t know about this
Thankyou for that good info. Mine has been off since i bought the bike
Glad it helped
thank you 100 ..appreciated
Glad to hear the video helped!
If i didnt saw this video i would do the same mistake... Thanks man
Glad it helped!
Gonna move it to the up position when riding now n see difference as I've been riding with clutch down..
How did it work out for you?
@@DadTechTV I'm unsure there still something making noise
I’ve just picked up what was supposedly “professionally assembled” Norco Storm 2 MTB from a shop and rode it back home for about 20 KM. Gorgeous bike with quality components but I was really annoyed with the slow gear shifting and occasional phantom shifts during my trip. Started doing research, bumped into your video, checked whether it was in correct position and what so you know, it was not. I pulled it up and definitely noticed how tighter the chain got. Just went out for a quick ride and definitely noticing smoother shifts and no gear skipping on the short trip. Will see how it goes on a longer ride but the difference is very noticeable. Thanks for the tip, mate!
Same bike... exact same problem and same solution. It mustn't be a well advertised component.
Same issue here, just got a rebuilt drive train, they either forgot or didnt know which position to have it in. I can see why it happens buts its annoying none the less.
Same thing, after switched to ON position I finally can feel expensive components, and yes bike was assembled in a shop with good reputation
I"m a road cyclist who has recently bought an MTB to change it up a bit so, I'm new to this. I've got a Giant Talon with the same set up and I've had conflicting information as to where that switch/clutch should be. I looked on TH-cam and some "experts" have said it should be on (up) and only off (down) when taking off the wheel or working on it. Others have said on for the road and off for the trails. Even the mechanic at the shop where I bought it from said off for road and on for trails. I'm confused now!
Wow, I didn't even know that existed hahahaha
I'm picking my Marlin 7 up in two weeks (hopefully). Thanks a lot for all the info :)
I was also unaware this feature was on this derailleur. To be honest, the bikes should probably leave the bike shops with the clutch on, but I'm sure its easy to leave it off when putting together a ton of bikes. Always good to know how your equipment works also. Hope this video helped!
You won't regret it best bike for the price in my opinion. I upgraded from a Minelli
Peace and war be with thee. Battles already won to win with when connecting the DNA'd education humbly. I am seeking a video how to place low temperature grease inn my hub and crank shaft (for a 2021 Dew Plus 650B, etc).
Any ideas?
God's wills wheeling
Thank you guys for sharing your experiences with Shimano deore m5120 because I just bought one. I haven't put it in my bike thou. This is very useful to me. You are truly great people. Thanks again.
Glad it helped!
Dork disc gone just need to remove those reflectors
I can proudly say i have now moved the reflectors. Much cleaner look.
I imagine how exited this guy would be when he finally upgrades to a fs bike, like soo much comfort and much, much better traction, etc..
I almost put in an order near the end of last year for a full suspension bike that would have arrived in April. I ended up waiting and that company stopped taking orders when I finally went back. I'm up in the air right now if i just keep waiting or if I find something else I like.
Useful. 10x
can you make a video about rapidfire...
i dont know how it works.
push my thumb and gear up (easiest) push my index and gear down (hardest)
i think this is not a way to take advantage of the rapidfire.
Rapidfire is what? change tow ou tree gear at once? how i trigger it?
i think i found it at 11:20
th-cam.com/video/-Hn1r7SPec0/w-d-xo.html
Thanks!
Nice video we are same Deore GS. Ride safe bro.
Thanks, you too!
how many speed your cassette is? and that teeth
It's a 1x10 setup.
I was told to flip it on when riding on trails.
based on the documentation from shimano, it said it should always be on except for maintenance. Not saying you have to do that, but just passing along what i read from them.
thanks sir
Thank you, exactly this. Now I can enjoy my Trek!
I've been riding my Norco fluid for years and cursed how often my chain comes off on descents. My fiance also hates how much noise the chain slap makes on her Kona. I can't believe the fix has been right under our noses this entire time 🤣
glad the video helped, and i bet when you go ride now, it will be a whole different experience!!! it was for me.
helped me out, i had no idea what that switch was for. thanks
Thank you thank you. This is the exactly what happened to me. I sent a a video to a bike shop and they told me my bike needed a tune up. New bike only 6 rides. All it was was the Lever Switch was in the down position. Thank you for this video!!
Glad to know it helped!
Nice
I was trying to find info about this M5120 everywhere if it has a clutch., Thanks!
Question sir. Do you experience chain dropping to lowest cog if you back pedal from 46t?
I have not seen this issue with my bike @Allyn. After taking a decent fall OTB, I have had the chain go between the wheel and gears. But I think it just needs adjustment. If you are seeing that issue, it is probably something an adjustment can fix.
Hey man, about to get this bike and really want to know as much as I can, this is really helpful. Thanks a lot 👍🏻
Hi Nix. Check out my channel as I have some other videos on the marlin 7 that may give you some additional info.
Protip: If your changing to lower gear and your rear derailleur starts making sounds, you could open the clutch system with 2mm allen key and service them. Use teflon grease or any similar. While at that, adjust the other 2mm allen key screw inside to make the pulley stiffer without impacting shifting to reduce chain slaps.
Thx, Now im Know what it was✌️
Glad it helped
Thanks a ton for this.
glad it helped!
Ik its been 3 years before this was published but i hope you removed the thing on your wheel.
Thanks for that. I had seen that and I didn’t know what it did. 👍🏻
Just checked mine after this video I was riding mine the same way thanks for the info
Thank you for sharing this i have the same bike as you are so i will do that to my Derailleur....
hope it helped!
My X-caliber 7 came also with clutch disengaged but when engaged the shifts don't seem as clean . Think a 1x11 would have been better? that low gear ⚙(large sprocket) is a big jump up .
Derailleur tension also as to be accurate on this model mech or it does not sync with the cassette teeth & if you look closely it as big & small teeth to help chain pick up .
I'm pretty happy with the 1x11. All a matter of preference depending on how and where you ride. When switching gears i do notice the big jump, but hasn't been an issue yet.
@@DadTechTV Yes I'm happy with it but it's Big jump mechanically if you don't have tension screw set up accurately you won't get a clean shift . Some models of derailleur have set-up marks for this purpose.
so with the clutch on will it wear out my back derailleur quicker or will it not?
I bought a mtb for the first time a few months ago. I wish they told me about the clutch when i bought it, annoyed they didnt as its a thing that could have really caught me out if i didnt watch so much YT
I've gotten messages by more than a few people who have said the same thing. Glad the video helped out!
Didnt know what it did and thanks for exaining what it dose havent had the chain come off but good to know what it dose
Dude thank you for this. I just got a mountain bike and there was a switch with labels on and off on the derailer I had no idea what it was lol
Glad it helped!!
I forget sometimes after fixing a flat to flip it. Put it on your checklist.
Love my Deore 10 speed. Bulletproof.
I'd also think about getting a chain guide.
A little extra protection.
Keep biking dude. Top man for getting out with your lad.
Next you'll be Bikepacking
There is a a good trail near the beach in NJ that you can bikepack. May try to hit that up in the fall.
Thanks man .. i have the same issue .. Cool .. no more skipping .. On a Scott Axia E ride Crossover gravelbike
Glad it helped!
Hi, my shimano deore rd m5120 is brand new but the cage is like bent a little or it's just the design of deore rd?
Not sure what you are seeing, but I would say mine isn't really bent, but not saying yours isn't correct.
teah just the video ive been looking for. thanks man
Glad it helped!
Damm i just got this fixed on my bike today and find it get clanky at the smallest gear. Thanks man! Im gonna flip it on tommorow and see how it goes
did flipping the clutch on help out?
@@DadTechTV Yes! Smooth like butter. No clanky sound etc. Thank man! Ur awesome!
Ah what a relief! I just got my bike back from having a service and rear cassette change and the chain slap was horrible and there was a weird creaking noise I could not trace - This was the cause of both! Thank you :)
I find it interesting how many bikes have been purchased and the owners were never told about this. Pretty simple walk through of bike by the shop would add a lot to customer service on their end
Ano tawag sa ganyang pwesas bibili kase ako ng bago nyan plsss pake explain
Just in time thanks for the video
I had the exact same issue. It came with the clutch disengaged and I left it as is for over 200 miles. I'm now hoping I didn't damage it before I noticed.
I'm going to pick up my 2021 Marlin 7 today- anyone know what general Hex Wrench sizes are used across the bike? I'm ordering a multitool for the saddlebag, and I just want to make sure I get the one that suits my needs the most
If ur looking for a bike specific tool, check out all the products from Pro BIke Tool. This one right here probably has everything you need, amzn.to/3qtLul7. If you want to make sure you are torquing everything correctly check out my videos on two of their torque wrenches. Their on the go t-torque wrench, th-cam.com/video/EHX6q-Soflw/w-d-xo.html, and the larger torque wrench with the most used sizes you need, th-cam.com/video/mO7LiNb8-4c/w-d-xo.html. There are links in the the descriptions of those videos to buy them also.
Thank You because I have the 2021 roam2, same deore 2x10. Now I have the goods on this lever.
hope this helped you out!
My Marlin 7 came with the lever in the "Off" position and shifts fine. When I moved the Lever to "On", there's a lot of issues with shifting in the shop/garage. I haven't tried it under load.
That's interesting that you have an issue with shifting once it's turned on. You may want to download the documentation direct from shimano and dial it in a bit as it suggests leaving it on except when doing maintenance.
Well I did test it under load and it is much better. But when shifting in the shop without a load, it had issues. My guess is the clutch has to be off when working on the bike or removing the wheel as per the instructions. Also, going to the 32T chainring which retains the stock chainline as well as using this clutch really quieted things down.
Your video helped me. Thank you for posting!! Greatly appreciate it.
Glad it helped!
Thanks man! that info should be in every bike's manual that has this derailleur
Glad it was helpful!
I have the same mistake. Mine is down when I ride
but can you shift gears when its locked ?
I didn't understand the clutch before watching this, thank you!
I just bought my Marlin 7 and on the 4th run i took on it the chain kept on coming off and to the point i could not even ride it. Brought it to Trek and they did fix it the cable tie broke and i thought the guy thought i took it off the cable was sticking way out. so he put a new cable tie on and guess what the cable tie broke...:) He did put a tougher one on it and he re adjusted the derailleur and i went out on the trail again and it was much Better. however it was ghost shifting from gear to gear, i for get what gear i was in but will pay more attention next time i go out. I saw this Video and i went to my bike and sure enough the lever was down, so i am hoping that will fix it, if not back to Trek..
How did turning on the clutch work out for you? Guessing no more chain issues
@@DadTechTV hey thanks after turning that clutch up never had a problem, that must have fixed the ghost shifting.
Great video
Hey dude....What shifter are yiu using??
I got the same product but my switch is in the off position. it has been working great without the extra tension. (no chain falling). I was questioning myself if the whole clutch thing it was just BS. My bike comes with a chain guard so is pretty quiet already. I will change it to the on position to see if I feel any differents.
For me the change was night and day. Just hopping off curbs would sometimes cause an issue before I realized it had a clutch. Always interesting to see how the same product functions differently.
@@DadTechTV I knew I had a clutch, but thought it was by default on. But I just realized is not. Maybe I will feel a differents while changing gears in rough terrains (when chain is bouncing around) idk.
