I had the good fortune to see Ry and Rosanne Cash in Chicago before the pandemic. Memorable to say the least. They started one song that I couldn’t pick out. It sounded like a space jam, but ended with Ring Of Fire. I’ll never forget that experience.
it's strange how music can rip the tears out of your eyes when you feel depressed and you think you have no more emotions left in your guts. thank you for letting me understand i'm not dead on the inside... love you mr. Ry.
" ... thank you for letting me understand i'm not dead on the inside." - Ever notice how that ability to "charm" others in that way is a gift of the great ones, no matter the artistic medium they practice, and no matter what emotion is being evoked, or even provoked. Ry is certainly one of those, with the exception of being provocative. Ry's style is not about catharsis, for him or the listener. Catharsis spits out, for the purpose of relieving inner stress. With songs like "Straight Street", Ry is more concerned with what he, or we take in, or consider for the purpose of achieving inner okay-ness, actually redemption. His songs, like "Straight Street", are about the protagonist righting behaviors, now considered wrong. Plus, the protagonist is offering up a solution, which is long term, as opposed to using episodic catharses as a cure. Just like gospel music does. Music that adds, rather than subtracts. Both can produce the same emotional response, though the prescriptions do vary. Call it magic. // Your comment really struck a chord with me. And got me to thinking about what makes Ry tick. And what makes him different, besides his exceptional skills and touch with stringed instruments. His playing is more like talking out his emotions, with all the verbal inflections included. That you can be touched by his music, already proves you're not dead on the inside at all, though sometimes it can feel like that. Who doesn't need this kind of doctoring? It's good to have Ry on your team of medical providers. Be Well!
Underrated by those unfamiliar with the concept of rating. They exist apparently. First saw Mr Cooder in 1979, just him and David Lindley. Correct rating established on that evening.
One of the best recording artist that ever lived ,is Ry Cooder and his band ..genius at what Ry Cooder sings and plays on slider guitar..the sound is fabulous..
However you do it, Mr Ry, your music never fails to please my ears. Thank you for sharing your gift. May God Bless you keeping you Healthy and Safe 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
You probably dont care but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can watch all the latest movies and series on Instaflixxer. Been streaming with my gf during the lockdown :)
It was a great day for me when the owner of Smokey's Records in SLC suggested a used copy of Paradise and Lunch to my 1986 teenaged self. Cooder has probably been my favorite musician ever since. Thanks buddy, I sincerely owe you!
Ry, you have always been one of my musical heros and continue to be. Your tone, your touch, your ideas, etc., are all so unique. If I had my wish, you'd live forever. Thank you for sharing you musical gift with us.
Ry Cooder and Mavis Staples... how am I so blessed to live in this world at the same time as those two people? I got to see Ry last year, and Mavis this year...
Ry Cooder is my favorite artist seems I was a child and with the years is getting even better (is cool playing with his son joaquim and friends).. salut maestro
I absolutely love this song. What a fantastic reworking of this old gospel song. Been watching Ry since the 70's. His voice sounds beautiful and something on the tone of that guitar reminds me of Peter Green.
I read in the comments that someone mentioned the tears flowing...........I totally get that. This beautiful song is so full of emotion...it’s deep and warm. I have been so lucky to have grown and lived in the years alongside this genius from his first album to this one. A one off, and not likely to be matched for generations to come....a beautiful man. Thanks so much for all the joy you have brought to my heart and soul. The world is a better place for Ry Cooders music and the message that it brings.
RY you are the Prodigal Son , I am so moved bye your music and have bin for some time, I spend much time on youtube searching and listening and watching you play you are a true legend god bless you and your amazing family of creativity to the lord and the soul of true music and not the usual top forty crap .
Not only superb touch of playing or choice of musicians -yet you seem to be able to create an atmosphere in your songs which drags the listener in. I at least would like to stay a lifetime in. Outstanding release!
The whole album is changing my life. How? If I'm doing house work, I'm boopin'. If I'm stuck in a bad traffic jam I am smiling like a jackal and doing a sing along with Ry. I'd like to share it with everyone!
Ry Cooder ,the music legend that entertains all over the world..great guitar Ayer and singer..great performer..great backup .God gives blessings abundantly..fantastic
Love this song. Love this album. Wish I could go to Seattle on the 13th. I have always loved Ry Cooder's voice and all of the wonderful music he has given us - including the many and sometimes obscure musicians he has sought out, brought out, played with and promoted, including his own son -- his whole life embodies the gift & spirit of music.
That's the first time I have heard this song and I love it so much. The lyrics could be my story too. Praise God I moved too. Awesome lyrics and I have always loved Ry Cooder's guitar playing. The other musicians were also wonderful.
First saw you in 74 on an Australian Broadcasting Commission show called GTK. 'Tattler' and a few others and that was it. Overwhelmed. Thanks for being, Ry.
Whenever I feel the need to turn up my happy meter, your music is what I turn to. Thank you Ry , you never fail to delight in all your various genres. Have loved your music for decades. You are a true gem! XOXO
Every time Ry puts out one of these new songs it makes it harder to wait for his tour to come to my neck of the woods. Really looking forward to this show.
Straight Street's a decent place to live. It ain't Paradise because devil's still on the loose. Keep 'Jesus on the Mainline' and He will show you the 'Way'.
Love the Prodigal Son album, this is my favourite track, the BV's are lush, just beautiful. Nice to hear it live and a bit more of Ry playing the Coodercaster, ripe for melodic playing.
Such a magic atmosphere, great song Mr Cooder you sing better than ever and I have all your records but you sound so much profound and relax it just give me gooses and bumps
Hey Cooder,,,,,😎Those lyrics coming from you hit me like a hammer...beautiful. The world needs it, but the world does not no how to thank or see any God behind it....sadly.
I still remember him taking 16 year old son, Joachim, to India with him to play on A Meeting at the River with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Joachim played the doumbek.
I’m about a week into the Ry Cooder rabbit hole and I’m loving it. I’ve had Safe as Milk for 23+ years, but never picked up his solo work until this week. Amazing talent and spirit. He’s an absolute searcher. He’s done so much in his career and still finds passion in what he does unlike almost al of his peers. I’m looking forward to discovering all of the books and crannies of his career
I allso play ultima online one of the oldest online games, in the game there is a DJ and i always requeast your songs in the game, God bless you RY I love your old Guitar so cool :-)
The sheer genius of 'less is more'. Is there ever a time when Ry Cooder is NOT simply phenomenal?
I cannot imagine a world without him. Thanks for everything!
Amen!
He has been part of my life for 45 years....love the dude

Underrated?
I fully agree ..
Underrated by those unfamiliar with the concept of rating. They exist apparently. First saw Mr Cooder in 1979, just him and David Lindley. Correct rating established on that evening.
I've always loved Ry; I love even more to grow old with him and see him mentor his son and younger musicians to a higher place, and they "get it."
Accept no other. A living legend.
One of the best recording artist that ever lived ,is Ry Cooder and his band ..genius at what Ry Cooder sings and plays on slider guitar..the sound is fabulous..
This guy's musical "talking" is astonishing. Understated and sublime musicality. That's no easy trick. Big thanks, Ry!
I am moved by this song, thank you Lord Jesus, RC gospel preacher, saved by God's grace, set free, hallelujah 🙌
That boy feels the music into existence. Always has.
God bless you Ry. I also had to move dear brother. Nothing makes sense in this world except Jesus the only way and straightest of all streets
Ry has always been way up there in my personal musical hierarchy. There has never been anyone like him.
However you do it, Mr Ry, your music never fails to please my ears. Thank you for sharing your gift. May God Bless you keeping you Healthy and Safe 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
