Saw Ry at the Great American Music Hall in SF around 2009, maybe 10. I had just listened to the sound track of Paris, Texas. My friend Wayne said 'we're going'. So I got to see the guy who did the slide on Sister Morphine. A new door opened that night. I've looked at music and playing it differently ever since. There is no one like him.

One of the superb guitarists of all time in my opinion. Ry sheer musical experience and knowledge far surpases most musicians out there. Ketih Richards once offered Ry a job playing guitar, he turned them down but had done some studio work on albums like Beggars Banquet. It's great to see Ry is still recording and making great records.

Always loved his song choices - to say nothing of his playing. I remember how he just slayed the song "Billy the Kid" live in concert at UVM in the early 1970's. Just him and his mandolin - magnificent !!

Ry, I remember you when you were a young kid jamming with my old buddy Taj Mahal. You partied with me, Leslie West, Jimi, Velvert Turner, Arthur Lee and Cynthia "Plaster Caster" Albritton in my apartment above the Whiskey in 1968. Good daze back then.
I loved those political records though. The one about the two brothers was just perfect. Brother is gone is the title amd it's just an emotional punch to the throat. Looking forward to this one!

I started to play guitar in my ‘20s. Of course I came across Ry Cooder and was hooked. So I picked up drums instead! Thank goodness he has a prolific output that sons decades. Lucky us!
What is that sitting on the wooden chair at the 3:00 min mark? It looks like a variac of some type but the guitar is plugged into it with two amp cables coming out. I know you can use one to lower in the voltage for a tube amp to get a sweeter sound but what's going on with this?
It's SOOooo much more than a Variac. Dig up a Fretboard Journal '2018 Electric Guitar Annual' and head to the article 'Everything is Weird'. Every fan should have a copy. There is an entire page devoted to "The Green Man". Look at about 2:57 and you'll see some 1/4" phono plugs going onto it which a normal Variac lacks. That's because this thing drives more than amp circuitry and was built for Ry by an electrical wizard named Danny McKinney. It's doing some buffering and allowing the actual guitar signal to be split to as many as 4 different amps. (Copied from a similar post) There's also a photo of his pedalboard on Pages 92 and 93.
That's cool - Ry also has a Vox Octave Guitar modified to work in much the same way, with double courses on the top 3 strings and single courses on the bottom. Tunes it to some kind of Open A tuning.
Jefferson Martin: Vintage tube gear was designed for 115 volts, but most homes and venues are actually 120. The Variac allows the amp to perform better and can actually change the tone.

This is awesome. Can anyone in Ry's team tell me what tuning he's using for prodigal son in the live version? It sounds like open D with capo 4... But sounds off when I try! 😅
A lot of electric guitars don't do so well with a squeeze-grip capo... It presses too hard, and makes everything off. They are designed more for an Acoustic. For an electric you often need to have something that you can adjust the tightness. That's what I've found anyway.
SURE(!) hope that the live studio version of Prodigal Son is on the record. Raw and pure. In the opening of this video, there's a clip of what I suspect (fear?) will be the album version. The little snippet just seems to lack the edge and energy... too polished. If it is the version, I do hope I'm wrong. Ry'll get it right.

What I have learned from being a guitarist myself, is that you have to have the ability to communicate with and thought your guitar.

You're absolutely right; the clip featured at 0:45 totally lacks the rawness of the live studio video. I'll stick with the latter.
