The movie still haunts me every now and than, specially listening to mr. Cooder. He creates an atmosphere and there is nothing els you can do than just let it consume you.... The man is brilliant....
It's congeniality! The story, the camera, the location, the spirit, the director with his one and only masterpiece, the actors, the dialogues, the cultural background, the suspense, the fight for survival, the threat, a few careless mistakes with no bad intentions yet punished without no human remorse. The scene when Simms is facing the gun barrels and says "Why are you doing this. We haven't done anything" and then being executed is incredibly touching. What a film that is!
The best soundtrack to any film ever. Ry cooder slide guitar made to make you weep. And to be fair the film does. The Cajun beats are fucking great too. What a film, and even better soundtrack.
Winter 1981, we had a free month subscription to HBO. Southern Comfort was running every few hours & I watched it as frequently as my mom let me. Excellent film and soundtrack!
Saw this movie at 9 or10 the same way That Illusive Balfa Brothers masterpiece "Parlez nous a boire" sedated my brain with that cryptic, hypnotic drone and has acted as a lifelong stimuli and touchstone ever since. And Ry Cooders intro was the gateway drug that got the hook in me thou.
Heck yeah, this song puts you right down in that swamp with the rest of them. Armed only with blanks save for one box of real bullets to split between 7 national guardsmen. A one-armed cajun terrorizing you for stealing his piro.
The first time I heard of, and got introduced to the incredibly talented Ry Cooder was in the Move “Southern Comfort” I was inspiring to learn how to play the guitar - I was captivated by his style of guitar playing. Pure, simple and yet emotionally-driven. Still listen to Ry’s music.
I remember watching this film when it first came out. I was very young and would have been listening to mostly top 10 pop music. I knew very little about other types of music or Americana music. I remember that the music in this film totally blew me away and this was my first exposure to Americana music. The music was recorded and played by Ry Cooder who was Walter Hill's main soundtrack collaborator throughout most of the 80s.
Excellent Cooder! it sure takes me back, & has been a major influence with my playing & so many more guitarists around the world!!!! Love it! God bless one & all, Brian guitarist with the Haley sisters.
One of the few movies that sucked me into it , made me feel like I was there . The setting and atmosphere was perfect not to mention the soundtrack . I dont think anyone could have captured the feel the way Ry did hes a master and doesn't get the exposer he deserves .
F-me! I just melted on the first chord! See this movie if you can! Good story, incredible music! Would love to hear Ry and Sonny Landreth do an album together.
I can remember watching this with my dad when I was like 9 years old when it first came out. Living down in Los Angeles at the time. Everything was absolutely care free back then.
I know what you're saying, longing to recapture the road back to that promised land of yester year and to live it again in the present. It seems to be the hardest thing to find, and music like this makes the soul search harder
To this day, only John Carpenter has delivered scores that send chills down your back like Ry Cooder. Both of these guys are musical geniuses in doing original scores for feature films. Simply amazing.
Both commie finger puppets , put forth as composers . . have you learnt nothing about HoodWood & the collective commie all throwing in to make pie sinister current

I cant believe the comments from one comment on this film. Love it! You love it as much as I do. Fantastic! I dont know the name of "Bigboy" but he was a Southern guy guy that played mourhharp in front of a general store down south. For some reason they took it off TH-cam. That fat man made me smile. Please share it if you have it.

That's Milt Holland (our late father) on Tablas and percussion, probably some drumset, he and Jim Keltner used to do some dual-drumset recording for Ry. . He played with/for Ry a good deal, Milt was also part of the "wrecking crew". (The Tabla sounds here are sometimes mixed with bangs on the hull of the boat from the Foley or production sound)

Deep down, every man has wanted to be in this situation, just as long as we have this music to go along with it.

I've never wanted to be hunted by Cajuns with blanks as my protection.
Loved this movie (and the actors in it). Ry Cooder elevated it to unforgettable. I've liked a lot of movies and forgotten them. Never this one.
Me too! It's a masterpiece!😊
Southern Comfort is such a haunting piece and a perfect match for the movie. Both are great. Love it.
