Excellent gameplay, NL. Keep it up! If you want to make the whole Consume thing easier, think of it this way: If you have N Orbs before playing, your upgraded Consume will add 3 Focus to the N-1 remaining Orbs. If 3(N-1) is more than a single passive Orb, then Consume is the correct choice. Eg you have 7 Orbs and currently each Frost Orb has a passive of 15. 3 * (7 - 1) = 18 > 15, so in this case Consume is the correct play.
I would change it to, if 3 times N-1 is equal to or greater than Current Passive, then Consume is the correct option. (because more powerful evoke is better than more orbs total). Great job on the formula though, seems really simple when I read it but for some reason couldn't parse it till I saw it. :P
Thin deck meta finally pays off, congrats on beating it with all the characters, this run in particular was really well crafted and taking the time to run the frost orbs numbers helped you not rush turns and thus play much better.
NL here's the easy formula (for full orbs): your current number of orbs -1 times focus gained from consume, compared to current focus. Examples: 6 orbs, 3 focus, consume (6-1)x2 = 10 10 - 3 = 7 you will do 7 extra damage by consuming. 6 orbs, 15 focus, consume+ (6-1)x3 =15 15 - 15 = 0 consume doesn't change damage dealt. 6 orbs, 16 focus, consume+ (6-1)x3 = 15 15 - 16 = (-1) you will lose 1 damage by consuming. this way it's easy because all you have to do is times tables of 2 and 3 and check whether it's more or less than your orbs are.
Here I was just about to post something like this as I paused on the heart when he's passing by consume repeatedly when its a no brainer increase in damage and defense. I'm guessing its a loss and can't help but wonder what his boosted damage output might have done for him. Edit: And he scrapes by and gets his kill with that galaxy brain thorns potion he held onto while bashing through act 2, Yah did damn good NL.
you should use orb power not focus and compare that to focus gained you are not only losing the focus for that orb slot also the base block/damage of an orb with no focus
NL For consume: IF Amount of focus added * Number of orbs remaining > Current Value of an individual orb, then consume adds value, if not, it removes value. So un upgraded Consume is 2*Remaining and Upgrades is 3*Remaining.
NL your math is wrong, you don't consider the amount of time your orbs get evoked. It would be exact only if you never channeled any orbs again The more you channel, the more focus start to matter example: it is always better to have a high amount of focus on 1 orb slot if you make a static discharge play
The butt clench was real. Especially around 59:15 when he was contemplating playing a card that would've killed him, because of Echo Form and the Heart dealing 2 dmg per card.
8:13 ...and you absolutely are. 30 hp is perfectly winnable especially with your deck quality and especially with the extra upgrade you would have otherwise had.
When calculating whether consume is worthwhile, keep in mind that focus also makes evoking orbs stronger. The gisnt head fight where u didnt play it because not playing it meant u gain 96 a turn instead of 95 is an example
Straight up good run. People love to call misplays because it makes them feel smart, but everyone makes them, and you built a strong enough deck that misplays didn’t really matter
NL I'm actually so stoked for you!! Haha that was great!! Honestly well done. Took it slow, thought it out, evaluated objectively. The boot sequence would have had you so confident early I swear.
@northernlion you forgot something in you're precious mathematical equation.. not only is it what bonus you'll get per orb.. it's also how fast you generate orbs... if every turn you're able to pop out 1 or 2 orbs, having higher focus and less orbs would yield more damage/defense than more slots with less focus... 12:56 cold snaps are better than a strike because they do dmg AND summon an orb.. if you're doing a frost deck, cold snaps are essential... 29:21 creative AI can generate more capacitors, defrag etc... .. amplify defrag - 2(4) focus... amplify capacitor = 6 orb slots.. 6 orb slots is 18 focus via consume... if amplified 2 capacitors thats 36 focus.... that's higher focus than any battle you had this run :P 47:57 nope.. you don't want amplify on defrag with consume in deck... having it on capacitor is much more powerful :D totally 100% CONGRATS on the win!
One trick for knowing if it's better or worse to Consume. Check if the difference between the value of the orb and the amount of orbs is smaller afterwards. The smaller it is, the higher the total value ends up. 2x2>3x1 3x3>4x2>5x1 4x4>5x3>6x2>7x1 ...
Fantastic! Great job, NL! Misplays or no, that was a great deck, a great run, and a great video to watch. Reaching that milestone of beating the Heart with all three characters is just the icing on the cake.
[3(consume upgraded) *x > Value of the orb] . X would be the amount of orbs after the use of consume. So if you have 10 ice. You would would need 4 orbs after consume with 13 ice to have more Block than before, because 4*13>5*10 [3*4>10]. Hope I could help you Mister Eggman. Love your videos by the way.
There isn’t really a “perfect formula” per se, as there are many variables at play, such as: how many orbs are you playing each turn, what types of orbs are you playing, do you have cards that synergize with orb quantity(fission) or orb variety(compile driver). So there are many(maybe even most?) situations in which a basic formula wouldn’t apply. However, if you are looking to EITHER SPECIFICALLY MAXIMIZE CHANNELED/PASSIVE BLOCK PER TURN OR CHANNELED/PASSIVE LIGHTNING DAMAGE PER TURN(aka frost/lightning orbs not being evoked) you could apply the following BASIC formula when using consume. Frost: #orbs/(#orbs -1) = x(as a fraction). (2+focus+2||3)/(2+focus) = y(as a fraction) /** 2||3 representing the focus gained from either unupgraded or upgraded Consume**/ Lightning: #orbs/(#orbs-1) = x (3+focus+2||3)/(3+focus) = y if(x>y){ consume = bad; }else if(y>x){ consume = good; } Example: You have 3 orb slots all containing frost orbs, and 6 focus. If you want to maximize your passive pseudo-metallicize block per turn, is it better to play Consume+ or not? 3orbs/3orbs-1 = x = 3/2 (2+6focus+3consume)/(2+6focus) = y = 11/8 x = 3/2 * 4/4 = 12/8 y = 11/8 x > y, therefore Comsume+ should NOT be played. This method is easiest when working with a large amount of focus, otherwise you might as well use basic multiplication. Aka- 3orbs*(2 + 6focus) = 24 block 2 orbs*(2 + 6focus + 3consume)= 22 block. Again, this is a bad way of assessing when to use Consume, but it works if you are exclusively using frost/lightning orbs for passive block/damage. Personally, I just use Consume whenever I can safely play it and also have 4 or more orb slots. Typically the value tipping point happens at around 3 or 4 orb slots. But I also typically roll a high-orb quantity deck, 5+ orbs usually.
1:01:09 sir... look at that strength buff he is getting. At 1:01:11 he has 18 strength.. 18 x 12 is some good amount damage (aka 216) Yes 58 is a joke in late, but the 216 damage.. oh man.. Look at the way he does damage. His single hits are really treatening in the early (cuz its base damage is 40) and multi hits are treatening in late because it's a 12 multi hit. Getting to 40 block at turn 2 is quite possible, but you get debuffed the first turn, making you get vuln and weak, making you get 60 damage. Now thats difficult for the second turn. Anyways, nice run NL abd lets see what you have in store for us :D
Hi NL! I figured out a logic explaination of the optimal ratio of orb slot to focus: the total orbdamage is focus*orbs and you can only increase each of these numbers via addition. you get the most effect by adding to the smaller of the two. That means the optimal ratio is 1:1 or for your gameplay this means: if you got less orb slots than focus-> increase orb slots and vice versa.
Kay Kunack he adds 3 focus for each 1 orb slot lost, so the actual ratio is 3:1. Other than that I think that’s a great method for estimating when to consume.
4:08 I saw this fight going really badly from a mile away. Elites and bosses almost always have some decent form of scaling which makes them 'dps checks' for your decks. Making your deck almost nothing but defense and then taking on Act 1 flaming elite before you can make that defense pay off with good scaling of your own is REALLY asking for a bad time.
He went through act 1 while taking a single elite fight and avoiding every possible chance at adding damage to his deck. NL's every win aren't crafted, they're just a recurring mathematical anomaly. He's not getting better because he doesn't understand very basic principles of the game.
How to know if you should play consume in a frost deck: if(The amount of passive block you get from 1 orb < focus gain from consume * the number of orbs you have left after using consume) You should play consume; else Don't; Example (consume is upgraded): You have 4 orb and gain 5 passive block. If you use consume you will have 3 orbs left. 5 passive block < 3*3 (9) So you should play consume.
Consume Justification Formula A/B=C A = Damage or Block one orb does B = Amount of focus youre gaining using Consume/Consume+ C = Amount of slots you need remaining Example: Orb does 12 dmg / 3 = 4 4 = Amount of slots you need after using Consume+. Dont use Consume+ if you have 4 or less orb slots. Orb does 12 dmg / 2 = 6 Meaning youll need 6 slots remaing after using non upgraded Consume.
Assuming you start with 3 frost orbs in play: Going from 3 orbs to 2 using Consume stops being worth it at 2 or more focus Doing it with Consume+ stops being worth it at 6 or more focus No, i'm not accounting for things like Loop or GPC. Yes, I did go outside today.
So the easy way for you to see if an orb slot is worth it is look at if a single frost orb is worth more than 3 times the number of orb slots you have -1 This is basically what is worth more, 1 orb slot or 3 increase to each other orb
Fun fact for everyone! Beat of death doesn't actually kill it will bring you down to 1 hp, though that makes burns precarious where one can slap you in the face!
I'll admit, I've disrespected both Capacitor and Consume in my own games, as well as Frost Orbs in general, and this may yet turn my opinion around. Usually my Orb-build for the Defect revolves around cycling through as many orbs as possible as quickly as possible, and following up with a Lightning Strike for ~500 damage. Very few blocks to make sure Static Discharge works, depending on Self-repairs to get my HP back up after the fact. It doesn't work as often as I'd like it to.
princess egg, if you put ascension on 1, the game actually gets easier for doing the boss since you get the chance to do more elites which helps you scale better
DippersTaco he actually could’ve predicted a win cause NL on twitter mentioned an OP frost deck days ago, and taking backlog into account it was likely this run or last run. Because last run was a lost, this run had a high chance of being a win.

NL here's the easy formula (for full orbs): your current number of orbs -1 times focus gained from consume, compared to current focus.
Examples:
6 orbs, 3 focus, consume
(6-1)x2 = 10
10 - 3 = 7
you will do 7 extra damage by consuming.
6 orbs, 15 focus, consume+
(6-1)x3 =15
15 - 15 = 0
consume doesn't change damage dealt.
6 orbs, 16 focus, consume+
(6-1)x3 = 15
15 - 16 = (-1)
you will lose 1 damage by consuming.
this way it's easy because all you have to do is times tables of 2 and 3 and check whether it's more or less than your orbs are.

There isn’t really a “perfect formula” per se, as there are many variables at play, such as: how many orbs are you playing each turn, what types of orbs are you playing, do you have cards that synergize with orb quantity(fission) or orb variety(compile driver).
Frost:
#orbs/(#orbs -1) = x(as a fraction).
(2+focus+2||3)/(2+focus) = y(as a fraction)
/** 2||3 representing the focus gained from either unupgraded or upgraded Consume**/
Lightning:
#orbs/(#orbs-1) = x
(3+focus+2||3)/(3+focus) = y
if(x>y){
consume = bad;
}else if(y>x){
consume = good;
}
Example:
You have 3 orb slots all containing frost orbs, and 6 focus. If you want to maximize your passive pseudo-metallicize block per turn, is it better to play Consume+ or not?
3orbs/3orbs-1 = x = 3/2
(2+6focus+3consume)/(2+6focus) = y = 11/8
x = 3/2 * 4/4 = 12/8
y = 11/8
x > y, therefore Comsume+ should NOT be played.
This method is easiest when working with a large amount of focus, otherwise you might as well use basic multiplication.
Aka- 3orbs*(2 + 6focus) = 24 block
2 orbs*(2 + 6focus + 3consume)= 22 block.

How to know if you should play consume in a frost deck:
if(The amount of passive block you get from 1 orb < focus gain from consume * the number of orbs you have left after using consume)
You should play consume;
else
Don't;
Example (consume is upgraded): You have 4 orb and gain 5 passive block. If you use consume you will have 3 orbs left.
5 passive block < 3*3 (9)
So you should play consume.
Jesus that last fight was the definition of a war of attrition. Good on ya Egg
Consume Justification Formula
A/B=C
A = Damage or Block one orb does
B = Amount of focus youre gaining using Consume/Consume+
C = Amount of slots you need remaining
Example:
Orb does 12 dmg / 3 = 4
4 = Amount of slots you need after using Consume+. Dont use Consume+ if you have 4 or less orb slots.
Orb does 12 dmg / 2 = 6
Meaning youll need 6 slots remaing after using non upgraded Consume.

One. Hour. Latair.
Assuming you start with 3 frost orbs in play:
Going from 3 orbs to 2 using Consume stops being worth it at 2 or more focus
Doing it with Consume+ stops being worth it at 6 or more focus
No, i'm not accounting for things like Loop or GPC. Yes, I did go outside today.
I was literally jumping up and down and yelling at my phone!
You have the best commentary I have ever heard. I dont see a twitch or stream link. Are you strictly youtube?
NL streams on twitch daily
About "the formula" ,keep in mind that every orb that gets evoked also does more.
Curse you and your avatar picture!

46:10 - Such maths, much count, very egg.
1:00:20 - What are you on about?... Great run, crazy ending, many genuine congratulations and the clapping of hands.
Well done NL.
Btw, does anyone know what episode he defeated the heart as the Ironclad in? I can't find it and I want too.
Pleasant Whale 355 and 377 I’m pretty sure are the only two
@@zinc_magnesium Thanks dude! I'll go check those out now.
So the easy way for you to see if an orb slot is worth it is look at if a single frost orb is worth more than 3 times the number of orb slots you have -1
This is basically what is worth more, 1 orb slot or 3 increase to each other orb
Fun fact for everyone! Beat of death doesn't actually kill it will bring you down to 1 hp, though that makes burns precarious where one can slap you in the face!
Is that real???
@@gattomeccanico6943 it was mentioned on discord server but haven't tested myself
I recently obtained a Defect Heart kill with a Static Discharge deck.
It was amazing.
Egg
Edit: HE HAS FINALLY DONE IT
Does playing core surge before consume negate the orb slot loss?
No
I'll admit, I've disrespected both Capacitor and Consume in my own games, as well as Frost Orbs in general, and this may yet turn my opinion around.
He isnt chasing elite paths anymore
Just nice to watch. Good job.
So close to losing since he didn't notice the "beat of death" of the heart increased to two damage per card played.
Prediction:
[ ] Defect loss
[X] Defect Win
see you boiz in an hour
DippersTaco he actually could’ve predicted a win cause NL on twitter mentioned an OP frost deck days ago, and taking backlog into account it was likely this run or last run. Because last run was a lost, this run had a high chance of being a win.
someone put that run in a museum
NL when you have plasma recursion is really good
This was such a good run, really is a testament to how strong Focus is, Blizzard would have been insane if it showed up. Can we have ascension again now?
Without the thorns potion this video would have been 6 hours long.
Watching this with 0 context as to how to play the game or what's even happening, just because I wanted to see what NL does when he's not (mis)playing Isaac. This game's pretty neat.
You never factor in evoking when looking at orb possibility
But i guess that wasn't the focus of this one,
REJOICE, DADDY HAS ASCENDED
HE DID IT! I'm so proud.
in most cases, cosume; you didn't take in all the evoke blocks/dmg you get in your math.
Good Job but side note for your next Heart fight. Don’t draw it out. Yes you have high block with frost but he was buffing his multi attack by 24 each time. If not for the potion you would of been in some heat.
Lightning form?
So whats their plan with this game? Are they going to make an StS2 or continually update this one with new stuff?
NL, when you don't NEED the block beyond to avoid the auto damage from the heart, play charge battery for more energy next turn pleaaaase.
Math is so hard, better overblock by 200 and make fight 20 years longer, than quickly count how much you need and let lightining do its job. -.-
That was ten extra strength on the final turn. That coulda hurt.
18 x 12 lul
thorns potion MVP
finally nl builds a real deck. good job ryan.
This run was fucking 200 IQ
>greentext the formula
I did not know NL partook in alt-right culture.
/a/ is dead anyway so bah
don't spill the soykaf
3 HEALTH AND A DREAM!!!
finally NL beat the heart with defect, even if it was necessary to use the most boring deck possible, still glad that hes maybe back at ascensions
Let's fucking go!!
posted THE FORMULA on the last video, let's see how long the backlog is
Yo I think you should take the 5 bites when you have molten egg. 1 bite heals for 3
then again im probably wrong since I don't really play defect at all
I believe in him.
Please NL. Defects only saving Grace is the orbs it channels. If u can gain multiple orbs you can do tons of damage without even trying. Think about it instead of trying to constantly build a deck that basically makes the orbs useless. Constructive criticism. Love the content
mykal Markward Did you watch the video?
@@zinc_magnesium unfortunately I watched after I made the comment, done jumped the gun on that one lol
great run
Imagine if he got a blizzard in that deck.
Defect loss length. Guaranteed. lets go bois
*1 Hour Later*
WHY YOU THROWIN SHADE AT DAD?
Eat shit
glorious run
This was amazing
The liquid bronze carry
Congratulations!
Doot Doot Great run, Dude!
