  • Thank you everyone for stopping by and sharing in this video with me. I have another great set to show you all, this time it's the High Polymer Resin Chess Set that sometimes is sold under brand names of Wood Tek and sometime Spruce Tek, sometimes it is labeled as Pro Plastic. Resin is made similarly to plastic in a sense that it is closer to plastic in feel and look than it is to wood. Be sure to let me know in the comments below what you think about this particular set and wether you think its worth it. Be sure to stay tuned as I have more wonderful sets I am looking to review in the upcoming weeks.

    I love your walk through the woods and the way you do your videos differently from most other chess TH-camrs. It's refreshing and gives a personal touch to your videos. So many chess videos and TH-cam videos in general are done in a generic way, often with people talking too quickly and in the same way. Keep up the great work!

      Thank you! It's possible with time I might have more subscribers, but this channel is new, I am new to this type of content creation. I realize that I am not a professional with this and that it will take me time to improve! My plan is when I get to that 1000 sub mark and get this channel to monetize, then I could really bring you guys much more interesting sets and chess things, possibly even find time to travel to some chess events, but that's all planning for now!

      Lol, thanks for that! Actually I used to do many of my videos in the park before, I had the time to do that on Fridays. It's not always easy to do, since there's people, weather conditions, noises, construction, cicadas, but I made due somehow!

    My set came in a reddish brown box labeled, Tomo kazu BestChessSet (Chess Pieces High Polymer) with a photo of the pieces on the front. Inside were two fitted trays for the pieces separated by cardboard and a piece of foam.

    Interesting, about the value. I knew something was happening with that because the package invoices I get from Indian retailers is like $80 for sets I pay $300 and more for. This is obviously not the case with HoS but checkout your package invoice next time you receive an Indian chess set. As far as the polymer chess set it's in a weird place for me. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable using that set in blitz because pieces often fly get some damage. But I pretty much don't mind to much because my plastic sets (Ultimate Chess Set being my favorite) are cheap. $20-$35 at the highest. Then on the other side of the spectrum.....would I use it in a classical time control game. Possibly for diversity but it would definitely play second fiddle to any of my wood sets. Even from your collection I would much rather play with the wood sets you bought and reviewed, especially the Cambridge Spring set. So then for me it comes down to where does it fall in terms of usage.
    That's not to say that its not a pretty set because it is. But its a bit of a tweener for me as a person who already has a a few decent wood sets. I can see it being more practical for someone new who only has the cheaper plastic sets and wants to upgrade. Also I can definitley see why someone would prefer the look of that knight which has a very sleek taper from its head to its base and overall very elegant lines. As opposed to that fierce grimace of the Cambridge Springs knight. The set design in general looks very long slender and elegant. Again thanks for the thoughts and excellent review.

      Thanks a lot for the thought out reply, I appreciate you taking the time to view and comment, as always! I agree with you that one must question what niche would a resin set like this occupy, which category would it best fit. On one hand I can see this set trying to compete with some of the higher end luxury wood sets, like the Paulsen, and yet some may say it falls short. I think this would be a good set for someone who wanted some degree of luxury look without having to pay the luxury price and would be ok with it not being wood. As far as chess pieces from India, seems a bit odd too these days, some of their sets are not expensive, especially compared to HoS sets, but I still prefer to see quality if I am to invest some money into a set, I want to feel certain that I won't be terribly disappointed with it, which I am not usually disappointed with too much these days.

    I think it’s just a plastic pcs and they use hydro printing to put the grain pattern on surface.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The density feel a little bit different, when you hit it with a nail, it feels more muffled, but you might be right about the hydro printing technique, I would be curious what we would see if we cut the piece in half, but I would rather not.

    I have this set in brown and cream. The only thing that I don't like is the high gloss finish. I only paid $70 for my set on sale. So, I'm thinking about taking a chance and knocking that finish down. The knights are nice... but weirdly fat. Both the cream & brown pieces have a fake wood grain.

    Hello from France! I am looking at this set and am interested in purchasing it. (I found a shop that sells it in France). I don't have a nice game of chess at home. so that would be my first of quality. The price is not too high that suits me. But I'm not bilingual and I don't understand everything you say during the video ... So can you tell me if this set is ok for a 1st purchase? Thanks in advance!

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daremo78 that's a hard question to answer since I have so many chess sets. Honestly, the very first set that I had was the one I would think was the best 1st time set for me. It was an inexpensive combo I picked up at a tournament back in 2006, it was a solid chess set with a roll-up board and carrying case. I wish I still had that set. Ultimately, I feel like the best set is one you take with you, one you grow to depend on when you play games.
