    I know they didn’t show it, but I still appreciate the fact that House went to buy a charger for the psp and actually kept using it, it’s like keeping the relationship between him and the boy in a poetic way.

      House is not a doctor that receives many gifts mainly because of the way he treats his patients. This might've been the first gift a patient ever gave him. You dont forget something like that.

      @@Timeward76 First gift might've been the car from the mobster depending on how early that was but overall, House solves rare cases after those people see maybe half a dozen doctors before him and are literally at the end of hope and some episodes, there are people begging to see him. I really doubt patients don't give him gifts even if just to see him. Even the patients they show don't absolutely hate him, most of them warm up to him by the end of it. In real life, a doctor like him is getting gift baskets even if he's an class A a-hole.

    Earlier in this episode, House convinces the child to breathe the anesthesia. When the boy's Dad asks, "Who are you?" House responds with something like, "someone you will never send a gift to".
    That's sort of why I tear up when the kid hands over the PSP to House as a gift. It's a nice callback, and the scene is incredible.

      And that first line itself is a call back to another element in the episode -- House sarcastically noting how many gifts Wilson keeps getting from his patients. It really is a brilliantly written episode; one of the series very best.

    When I was 12 I contracted the worm featured in this episode from a trip to the beach over spring break. I was sick for months, constantly making trips to the doctor and getting sicker and sicker. I lost a third of my body weight and went to the hospital twice. None of the doctors could figure out what was wrong with me, they even accused me of faking my symptoms and purposefully starving myself, making myself vomit and have diarrhea up to 15times daily on the worst days. It wasn’t until my pediatrician I’d been to since I was a baby though of this parasite due to factoring in my recent trip to the beach that I was properly diagnosed and treated. When I was given an endoscopy the worms had worked their way up my stomach and were right below my lungs, I could have died or at the very least had permanent damage if it wasn’t caught when it was. Ironically the following week when I was recovering this episode of “House” aired. You remember watching it with my mother and talking about how ridiculous it was that I had been suffering with this worm for months and then saw my condition featured on tv of all places. I feel very grateful to my pediatrician that he never gave up on me and didn’t try to accuse me of having an eating disorder when I was really life threateningly ill like several other doctors did.
    Too long didn’t read?
    I had this same parasite as a child, it was caught a few days before it reached my lungs by my childhood doctor who incidentally was the only doctor who believed me that I was actually ill and not suffering from bulimia.

      Its a pretty heavy emotional burden to see your child struggle with autism, my daughter has it and if im lucky she might have a day maybe once a week where she will do something as simple as lean her head against mine when I pick her up, she hardly ever looks at me and really only interacts with me when I have french fries or popcorn, those moments she will stare at the food and tug on my clothes. We have a very limited system of non verbal communication and its painful to see her just sit and play without doing things that a normal child would do like talk to me in short sentences or bring me a toy to show me. So yeah im not surprised that they portrayed a family that wasn't leaping for joy that he was ok, they should have been and I know I would have been happy but its very hard to see your child struggle.

      I was working in a supermarket. I used to be a packager. Once, I helped a couple and their son with their stuff. By the way the cashier told me about them, they were regular clients, and I could clearly see the kid had mental issues (more likely than not severe autism. I'm just assuming because I never asked). He was throwing a tantrum because he wanted a toy I had in one of the bags, and he actually calmed down when I stared at him, talked to him a moment just telling him that everything was fine and he was a champ, while I opened a yogurt and gave it to him. His parents were surprised, not only that he reacted to me, but that he gave me a high five after that. When they returned about a week after without him, the mom thanked me for calming him that day. Those little stories are the things you rarely forget.

    • @branlopgar
      @branlopgar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      The parents reactions and several lines when they say the boy doesn't make eye contact with anyone imply that Adam staring at House after giving away his PSP is the first time he made sustained eye contact with someone. Which, if you know anyone with autistic children, is a huge step in their development. A nephew has autism. He rarely makes eye contact with anyone who is not mom/bros, is deathly afraid of dogs and not even his mom can stop his crying if something upsets him. Knowing that is why a scene like the end of the episode is so powerful.

      SUPERSHASHA it's called empathy and for a moment there is a universal connection the world over when somebody connected you felt that connection within you. Your brain was making all the connections between the child's illness, their inability to connect with others, him connecting with House, and you projecting your own self into that position. We have been assaulted by moments like this from TV and Music every day of our lives and it's like clock work for this kind of connection to be turned on when moments like this are shown on TV or played out in a song. Some people are more empathetic then others. The ability to project others emotions onto ourselves and feel what they are feeling or what we perceive they are meant to feel in that moment. Good shows are and good advertising and good music rely on this kind of psychology to sell us their product. Same goes for using kids and young animals to hijack that part of the brain that wants to take care of cute things.

      It's because after season 4 everything started to spiral around House's mental issues rather than focusing on the medical cases like in the first three seasons, it was also kinda disheartening to see House take one step forward into fixing his life then take a huge leap backwards, I wasn't even sad when the show ended abruptly, it felt like they mercy-killed a dying dog.

    • @ultrixsoma2736
      @ultrixsoma2736 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The series was always about House and his issues with other people. He is an addict who happens to be a medical genius and thinks that if he remains miserable, he would not lose his 'gift'. And is not like the other seasons are not focused on medical cases. That's the main thing on the show.

    • @makotomikami
      @makotomikami 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Not it wasn't, the early seasons were episodic, even when something big happened, like, House leaving Stacy, or him getting shot, it was only mentioned on the next episode, but House would go on, he was always the same amount of miserable, whereas the later seasons he started to go more and more insane, but to each their own I guess.

    It's amazing how they were able to set up that climactic moment. House nonchalantly says 'see ya' when the parents go and thank him and looks straight to the ground, showing us that he too shares 'autistic' symptoms; one of the prominent characteristics is not being able to look at others people's faces. But the beauty comes is the parallel that Wilson mentioned between House and the autistic boy, is the final scene where they were both able to acknowledge each other, face to face, showing the highest level of respect which is further amplified due to their ASD.

    I play rugby with an autistic dude and we get on really well as do the team because we don’t talk to him any different. He takes if differently and we are all cool with that but because we talk to him the same as everyone else he loves and understands we respect him. It’s probably based on something similar with this because Adam sees that he treats him the same as house treats everyone else. Which is why he responds.

    I praise this kid's bravery in giving House his psp and making eye contact with him.
    In autism (and aspergers), the patient has a hard time upsetting their self-made status quo (which can be easily confused with extreme OCD). If the boy didn't want to give him the psp, and his parents took it from him, he would throw a fit, because it would be digging a hole in what he saw as his life.
    Also, autism (and its aforementioned cousin) makes it difficult to make eye contact. This is because the patient has heightened senses that relay information to their brain at accelerated rates. Eye contact is an overdose of information, and it can cause panic in autistic patients.
    How do I know this? Because I have aspergers, and my sister has autism.

    House is absolutely the best character in TV with so many different dynamics and sides to him. What makes him so interesting is how complex he is and you could never explain his personality in just one, two or even three sentences. And yes, I know he’s a TV character but he’s always stayed consistent and he’s always been this miserable jerk. I’ve always wanted to understand every part of him because it’s interesting.

    I saw the whole show few years ago and this was my favorite episode. Just for the context of ending: At the begging of the episode House is teased by other doctors for never receiving gift from his patients because he is such an unpleasant jerk to them. They start to treat autistic kid and house manages to communicate with him and saving his life so the kid gives him his PSP that he refused to put down entire episode, so it's clearly something he really values and it just shows how grateful he is. It also means a lot to House since you can see him playing with this PSP in few episodes later.
