Joel eats, drinks and breathes music and has done his entire life. He’s got a musical mind that nobody else will have for a very long time. He’s such a rare talent. I’ve been listening to him since 2009 and his music is still just as groundbreaking and memorable now as it was back then.
The Modern day Mozart. The moral of Joel's story is he totally IMMERSED himself in music production and took zero fucking shortcuts. Success never fell on his lap. It was self engineered. I love this mans music
deadmau5, kaskade, Morgan page. They are the origins of the early 2000s electronic music. Before electronic music became main stream into pop music. Deadmau5 takes the cake as the most influential.
I'm not saying that Garrix is a bad producer, just saying that probably he can't create sound from scratch using a Moog or an Eurorack Modular as Deadmau5 does, garrix uses presets and drag and drop ready samples for drums probably. PS. Of course his music got better, with all the team you got behind you when you are famous like him, from songwriters, to producers and sound engineers of course you music get better.
The amount of inspiration im getting so far from this video is leaving me speechless. So much respect for you Mr. Mua5. Im at a point in life where i dont know where to turn, i just turned 25 yesterday march 7th. There are so many things i want to accomplish in this life we have, my main goal being helping the less fortunate. I dont know what else to write at the moment as ill continue watching this video, just know that you've inspired yet another lost soul, thank you brother. Keep doing you..
Welp since daft punk retired and split up, the other biggest influence on my life is now the only person I look up to. And he is so down to earth. Love ya Joel!
Don't know his music very well but I took an interest in him and the more I see his videos / Twitch, the more I appreciate he is an artist with integrity, believes in what he does, is demanding with himself and does search for sound innovation, instead of making a record in 5 minutes with samples and plugin presets. I'm glad he succeeded artistically and financially. He looks like a pretty decent human being and fun friend. Too bad I'm not in Canada ;-)
Mutually beneficial relationships are soooo powerful. I think a lot of folks are so focused on only doing something for cash. Especially younger ones struggling to survive. Education and knowledge are some of the most important "things" anyone can have. No one can steal it... the same can't be said about the cash in your wallet or bank account.
I love the purity of the approach. I'm trying to learn to make music and this is inspiring. I wouldn't say "don't watch videos" to pick up abilities and understanding - but figuring things out on your own really is the only way to come original. Not everyone has time for this (if you're doing music as a side gig) - but you get the point.
Everyone needs to stop hating on the person who runs this channel and Deadmau5 alike. TH-cam automatically takes down any video that it finds to have "copyright" infringement. It's not like Joel is personally going around taking these videos down.
Jeff J I don't think Joel is known for this vast knowledge and use of the English language through storytelling, as his ear is more in tuned than most of us that turns out popular electronic melodies and beats.
This is so inspiring! Of course I decide to turn my life around and pursue music seriously and then covid hits. Making the face to face connections is much trickier now. But I completely agree with Joel, there's only so much you can create in your bedroom without meeting any anyone, jamming or sharing ideas. It gets really boring eventually
Awesome. Actually I never stopped to see his real life story. I've got him up randomly when I saw the hit "Not Exactly" on a website, but never thought he'd overcome that much. In other words, I didn't know he swore so much, hahaha. He's a cool guy in the end. Very original and unique. Kudos for the mau5.
25:35 lol even today, some company try to sell you their plugging and tell that they are better than the other one, but they can't tell why at the end it's just a EQ with great vizualisation but most of the people who buy those EQ don't know how to use it
i always tried to connect with ppl in person, to get my music out. But the problem is, i live in fucking Germany where everyone is just there for themselves and dont care about others. And in the internet its so hard to stand out of the million other people creating music in their bedrooms and uploading it on soundcloud.
Yeah, many things changed over the year! i found very difficult to make real life connections too, specially when you start to get older, people have a hard time trusting in my intentions and actually caring about stuff that i do. I'm from Brazil and i've tried to go on a studio close to home, just like joel did, but people there don't really want me hanging around there XD. I tried doing that, didn't work, but i accept that, i'm not in canada, i'm not in the 90's. I have to try diffirent things, be persistent and always learn, like joel recommended, that didn't changed. It's not a quick process, especially today where anyone can do this from home, it's not a new and difficult thing to do anymore, it takes more effort now. I wish you good luck in your career and much success with your music!
How is that going now? I just moved to Germany during Covid and yeah it is quite impossible to make real life connections...but I do want to be surrounded by music everyday, create and hopefully make a living out of it. Now it's crazy hard, you gotta to be on Instagram like everyone else, people buy loops libraries and make tracks instantly, everything keeps getting more and more saturated. Rough times :)
In case anyone wants to listen to Joel's first ever remix:
th-cam.com/video/Rzt9Bf_rGLU/w-d-xo.html
F*cking bonus points, man.
that bass line is straight from the party boy theme tune

Deadmau5 is so down to earth
he actually isn’t and that’s what make’s him special
he's the looniest guy I've ever listened to and that's what's awesome.
The Modern day Mozart. The moral of Joel's story is he totally IMMERSED himself in music production and took zero fucking shortcuts. Success never fell on his lap. It was self engineered. I love this mans music
I think the Modern Day Mozart would make music with Orchestra's and not be making Electronic Music but I see what you mean.
"make music with Orchestra's" -- your understanding of classical music is baffling.
try to compose melody like he does
@@fefobiz or lack thereof
I just come back here for inspiration whenever I'm down or in need of some sort of motivation for music.
I do the same. I was stuck on a beat today and needed to listen to this guy speak his story.
totally agree with you mate! I usually losten to joels story of he begun his career in music producing for to be more motivated in creating music

13:48 When your trigger word is "pears" lol
That thing that Garrix uses as a fucking laptop stand... xD
Garrix is a good producer/DJ but mau5 is right xD
Ahahahah xD
I'm not saying that Garrix is a bad producer, just saying that probably he can't create sound from scratch using a Moog or an Eurorack Modular as Deadmau5 does, garrix uses presets and drag and drop ready samples for drums probably. Yeah but his "fucking laptop stand" was on the channel of a SSL Consol
Yes of course, is garrix is 1 mau5 is 10, in terms of production skills

I threw my USB at getter back in October haha
Quoting " being very offline... take in music and go to a f*ckin' nightclub", beautiful.

"I don't wish that on fucking Garrix" lol
13:09

Welp since daft punk retired and split up, the other biggest influence on my life is now the only person I look up to. And he is so down to earth. Love ya Joel!
I really ENJOY seeing young people grinding out their youth and learning a Trade and becoming successful. You ARE a Musician!

My opinion has changed.
Genuine!.
Great insight. 👍

thanks man for sharing this !

Not unless him or his label reports it
A lot of good advice here for anyone wanting to do anything they love. Not just for electronic music.
Great words from Karma K!
Great interview. I noticed he doesn't exhale his cigarette smoke
Rick Elliott I was thinking the same thing😄where tht smoke went
I can do similar thing but still some little smoke comes out. Dunno how the fuck he does it :D
Shit man.... I'm not really into his kind of tracks but I really really liked the guy after seeing this. Seems really honest. Good vid
i think he's a great personality to talk with, real and no bullshits
"I don't wish that on fucking Garrix" - lol :D :D
Pretty dope your vid is officially linked by Masterclass. Flash was awesome. Way beyond my html tho.
Every 10 words he says, 5 are "you know" or "fuck"/"fucking" hahahahahh
Um, yeah. His diction is pretty limited.
Jeff J I don't think Joel is known for this vast knowledge and use of the English language through storytelling, as his ear is more in tuned than most of us that turns out popular electronic melodies and beats.

He talks so much shit about Martin Garrix lol. I love it
Awesome. Actually I never stopped to see his real life story. I've got him up randomly when I saw the hit "Not Exactly" on a website, but never thought he'd overcome that much.
