    Very informative. After following this I now have some polyester blanks curing. I used red synthetic dye for polyester. I’ll see how that works.

    Tim thanks for showing how to: I must say I have use your resin to cast and mix in my basement at 60 degree's then went out in my garage at 10 degrees in the middle of winter fact it was Janauary. I use 4 drops of hardner in a 1oz resin mixture and it was mixed with dry roses (petals) and mix with yellow pigment and it dry in 24 hours and pen turn out nice. I did this test to see if it would work plus I guess i was borne too!!!
    Best Regards, Louie B.

    I really enjoyed your video. Lots of good info. My first two casts of six blanks using pex pipe for mold was with Castin Craft with pearl ex pigment. I put my casts in a pressure pot for approx 10-12 hrs. With both casts the blanks came out of the mold with a little persuading and were very sticky. Any ideas as to problem. With the first cast the stickiness seems to be clearing up after a day or so . Thanks.

    I have that exact same ice cube tray but the resin seems to stick, is there a good way to get it out? Also, just ordered a bunch of your stuff (resin miser, kast-a-blank) totally thrilled with it!

    Hi from England.
    Could you please tell me what the difference is between acrylic and polyester resin and which one would you recommend for making pen blanks for the first time?
    regards,
    Bill.

    • @KFGrandt
      @KFGrandt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Acrylic (and epoxy) resin are thermoplastics, meaning they can be manipulated repeatedly with heat. Polyester resin is thermosetting, meaning that it sets permanently with heat application. That's the easy way to put it, there's a lot more science behind that, but you get the idea.

    If you waited longer for the resin to set up before pouring would the colors be more defined between the two? Great video!

    • @gregoryhalye8907
      @gregoryhalye8907 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love2boat92 yes, if you wait a longer time, the colors will tend not to flow into each other as much.
      @ don hen Yes, the acrylic resin will stick to itself without any problems. It's like gluing PVC pipe, it basically welds itself together and makes it one solid piece. Also, there's basically no difference between acrylic and resin, as the terms are interchangeable for these items.
      @ Steven Corry The hardness will vary depending on how long it's had to set up and the temperature it's been sitting at. Ideally, it will be about as hard as maple or oak, and will turn on your lathe at a similar difficulty, but if you add things in that can damage high speed steel tools it will dull your tools pretty fast. The popular method for turning acrylic is to use carbide tipped lathe tools.
      @ Tim Sheppard Yes, you can use any acrylic paint to color your acrylic resin, just make sure you don't use a lot, as it can affect how long it takes your resin to set up. If you use too much acrylic paint, it may take MONTHS to set up and harden.

      @Lanninglongarmmowing 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gregory Halye I thought so. I wonder if they wouldn't stick to each other as well. Thanks!

    • @gregoryhalye8907
      @gregoryhalye8907 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love2boat92 Oh no, as long as they're not yet set, it's like mixing PVC pipe and PVC glue ... the 2 acrylic resin parts will weld to each other, even if one of them has dried and set.

    Why do you need to wait for the resin to start to harden? It seems it would work fine if you let it harded in the mold.

    As long as the blank is dry and you aren't handling wet resin you can take the gloves off. I think I got so wrapped up in making the video I forgot to take the gloves off while turning.

    Excellent video. but I hope you don't mean you'll have background music while you are talking. That's so distracting I never watch videos that have music playing while the guy or gal is talking. I hope you just mean you'll have it at the end while your adverts are rolling. Again excellent video thanks for making it (and without music).
