    I've made around 100 pens. About 75 acrylic and 25 wood. I decided to try casting my own blanks. I followed Christopher's instructions precisely. I got a very pretty blank. It was the best drilling blank and best turning blank I've ever turned. Roller ball pen for my 85 year old retiring father (professor) turned out beautifully. Thanks Christopher!

    This might be the best video on using this brand of resin. You actually show how many drops of catalyst to add! 👌🏾

    This video is a godsend! I've been searching for how to DIY acrylic rods for 2 hours now and this vid seems to be the perfect one with instructions on how to do it as well! I'm gonna make my own acrylic rods for my pipe stems. THANK YOU!

    Its funny that Mike Mac said the background music was too loud because I sorta agreed with that after I posted this. It was a little distracting. On the other had I had multiple comments like "cool music" or "who is that". I no longer have music running though out my videos. Not sure what others feel, but my thoughts are that this is an information video and not a music video. Anyway I am so glad that so many people have viewed this and have gotten inspired.

      +Christopher Demetrick Hey Chris, thanks for the tutorial. I really enjoyed it but I have to agree that the music is too loud. That's the first thing that I noticed about it. Other than that, you did a fabulous job at explaining the process. Now off to Michael's to get the supplies! Thanks

    Thank you for this video. I just tried this yesterday and the blanks look great and unlike all the videos out there using alumalite it was great not needing a pressure pot which easily would have set me back $150, which is more them I wanted to spend on my hobby.

    Probably amazed that you are still helping people with this video after over two years! With 45 years of woodworking under my belt, I decided to try the pen thing. I started with aluminite and the pressure pot thing, did the bubble dance, and every other thing that could go wrong, including the learning curve on applying CA glue for a finish. Finally got five pens in my gallery where I sell. Whew!
    Then this caught my eye but the polyester will be interesting on the lathe compared to he Acrylic. You seem to have the portions down pat. I think the catalyst drops are critical to the portion. I also think that is 3/4" PVC pipe. It all makes sense, and I bought what I needed and plan on making some blanks very soon. Thanks so much!!

      +Tsunamiguitars I've been using this method for a while now and it works great. I got a few different sizes of PVC so I can make pen blanks, bottle stoppers, etc. Its fun to experiment with different colors. I also keep a toaster oven in the shop so I can speed up the process a bit if needed...otherwise I just pour the blanks and let them set all week, by the time the weekend comes i can just slide the blanks right out of the PVC...if they don't slide out they aren't ready yet.
      These blanks don't come out anything like the ones you get at the supply stores, but you can kind of do whatever you want with them, make your own molds and make your own blanks. The ones you see in the stores that have different colored ribbons are actually made by pouring those colors you want for the ribbons on a sheet of glass very thin, one it cures you scrape it off and lay it in a mold then pour the base color over it. I haven't tried this year as I haven't made the molds, but that's how that part works.

    I thank you so much! I'm learning to make "Sonic Screwdrivers" the 11th Sonic Screwdriver specifically. They use resin cores and resin cores are much harder and take longer to make, a way of cheating and getting it to look like resin cores are by using Pen Blanks. This video helped so much, thanks!

    I like this method, and plan on using it! As another note, just recently, (February 1, 2016), my wife and I discovered five inch ice cube makers in Walmart that are actually 28 grams each. They make a blank that is almost 3/4" around. They come in a silicone mold, six on a mold, for about $4.00. Check it out! Just a small display on an endcap near the household stuff. We bought two, and I poured my first two blanks using the resin you suggest in these silicone molds with great success. I added gold and silver powder, and they came out great.
    Still, I bought the correct pipe and plan on doing what you do. Great idea, thanks!!!

    Thanks for the video. I just started using the same products you are and I'm hooked. I have two questions. After you put in the catalyst, don't you wait a bit before you blend the colors in the tube? My first batch I mixed and added to the tube right away. The black and yellow turned into a green and black swirl. The second batch I waited for it to thicken and the two colors remained in tact. Also, what's the music? Thanks again!

    I’m getting ready to do exact thing you did in this video . Same everything, except I will be using a slightly smaller pipe , 3/4 “ sharkbite pex . I also got a great price on pearl ex pigment at Joann’s. Do you ever use a pressure pot to cure the blanks. Very timely and informative video.

  • @jonohoff
    @jonohoff 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, this was a really neat and informative video to watch! I've always wondered what the allure of turning pens was, because 99% of people just buy blanks, but you make it so much more personalized by doing this! what size of PVC pipe do you make those in? And what chuck and jaws do you use for turning them? I have a Supernova 2 with the 70 and 100 mm jaws. I know they make jaws for it that are specifically for turning pens from the rectangle blanks, but those probably wouldn't be the best choice for turning from your round blanks. Do you ever make rectangle sheets and then cut them out to the 3/4" pieces, or do you only make round ones?

    Thanks for sharing your experience, just getting started in pen making and have some ideas for blanks that I want to try! I see lots of people are using pressure vessels to help eliminate air bubbles. What is your experience without doing that? I was looking online for some type of tubes or tubing to cast in and your solution is perfect! Have you considered trying to cast the pen tubes in the mold as well?

    When you pour the colors in the blank... do they mix or do they stay separate?

    Mr. Demetrick, thanks for the great video explaining the process. I want to make a pen that is white on one side and red on the other (team colors). Could I make a white blank and red blank, saw them in half and reassemble? Would I use glue or more resin?

    • @diogenesegarden5152
      @diogenesegarden5152 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would have to experiment but if you poured the first colour and allowed it to cure, then the second colour on top (a bit like doing layered jelly), that might work. If you wanted the colours vertically you could get an elbow joint for the pvc conduit, mark the half way point, fill with the first colour, allow to set and pour the next.

    About how many blanks can you make out of one container of castin resin

    • @davidackmann662
      @davidackmann662 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 3/4" diameter piece of PVC is about 1/3 of a cubic inch in volume for each inch of length. Therefore, a three inch length of PVC will contain about 1 cubic inch of resin. A 16 ounce can of resin could fill about 36 linear inches of 3/4" PVC pipe. Of course, this all depends on the density of the resin, but Castin Craft polyester resin is "close enough" to that of water that you can use this as a rough approximation. Of course, a different mold will yield different results, and some resin always remains in the paper cups, but you get the idea.

  • @Daniel-wn4yj

    • @davidackmann662
      @davidackmann662 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the recommendation is 5 drops per ounce, but that depends on your mold, ambient temperature, humidity, colorant and so forth. Too much catalyst will lead to a brittle blank

    I tried turning a pen with acrylic. I used a thick CA just like for my wooden blanks, and left it alone for a good hour and it still did not bond. Is activator a must for acrylics?

      I have never tired it without - I will do an experiment on some scrap and let you know.
