I started my journey as blockchain developer in around Mid last year, it's all started with watching video like this and set my mind to actually code. Long story short now I'm an enterprise blockchain consultant for one of the Big Four consulting company.
If u may, I'll offer u some advice. First up, set your mind whether u want to learn public blockchain or private. Their values proposition is NOT the same. But that doesn't mean they dont share common values. Public is more "anarchist" in nature, they want decentralized everything and rejects centralization. Private or consortium more about building the solution around enterprise, they seek stability and wider scope of views including regulators. Enterprise Blockchain have always been my focus and passion so yeah.
That clears up, i think it's fair to say that i have bachelor degree in Software Engineering many years ago but i have never even code after graduation. I went to banking and finance etc until recently. So your path may be differs from mine. So here's how to get started. It wont be easy for zero trust me. It's hard works. Way more than everyone else.
I would suggest u familiarize with concepts. Not just familiar but truly understand what is consensus from concept to codes, what is container, what is virtualization, u mist be comfortable with linux technologies too. All of that, u also must be able to see the big picture not just codes and what does it do, but what it doesn't do and how should u approach that, be prepared to provide solutions. Okay the last part probably more towards consultant than developer but it's still relevant.
Come to the actual first step there's no running away from coding. If u have never codes before it's time to install VSCode and learn Python. Focus on CRUD which is essential skills for any IT job. Build an inventory management system based on python. Try not using tutorial, just think about the use case, then decide feature u want it to have then start googling from there. If u relied on end-to-end tutorial u may end up like me, stucked inside tutorial loop. U may never actually solved any problem or most importantly knowing how to find and solve the problem. It may not make sense but u will get it once u started on your own.
After u have comfortable with Python and databases, it's time to job hunt. I took Blockchain developer graduate trainee program for 6 months that pays around $300/ month. Do it for experience and learning curves and put your hearts into it.
Needless to say i took advantage of that program, staying up even sleep in the office just to solve problems. U may never have to do that, but I'm a slow learner when it comes to code. So i work more to catch up. It's unhealthy but to each is their own.
The program was over they didn't offer me full time position with them because they don't have any project or client that require enterprise blockchain expertise. So i left unemployed for few months and countless interviews (mostly around cryptocurrency projects and blockchain game) which I don't actually interested in, until i landed on this one with Big Four. Which pretty much what i wanted to do.
So i hope this helps in giving u motivation and views on how to get started. I remember being so clueless how to get started but instead of stuck in that loop, just take the first action. Even certification might helps. Like the one I'm taking with Linux Foundation for Certified Hyperledger Fabric Developer. It may give u significant advantage as beginner to be competing with many others that already coded for years. Always ask yourself, so many other talented programmers out there so why would they want to choose you? If u know wht u re lacking, u know where to improve. Next step is just to find how you going to improve.
      Goodluck. 👍
