    Hey man.
    I just installed 2 240 volt outlets in my wood shop.
    Watched lots of vids on the topic, and yours was the best.
    I’m one of those guys ,that if I can see it done,I can do it.
    The small details that you show instead of telling about is the key.👍✌️

    I did a lot of wiring in Viet Nam in 1968, I wish I had you as my instructor back then, very easy to follow and understand. I am in the process of wiring my man cave (12 X 28) shed and using your videos as refreshers which will have 2 240 volt outlets. I want to thank you for being so generous sharing your knowledge and great explanation of the process. This is the MOST deserved sub on TH-cam, I would subscribe a 1000 times if I could, you are by far the best instructor on TH-cam. Many, Many Thanks

    Very nice demo. Thanks!! I did this stuff as a young apprentice around 60 years ago. The skills you display in your video show me that the basic concepts remain unchanged. I need to install a 240v line in my basement so this is quite timely and I'll have to thank my buddy who sent me the link. Thanks again for the refresher, and also for your new tips, like leaving loops of wire in case breakers need to be moved. Great idea.

    Great idea clamping the Romex to the connector first before attaching the connector the service panel. I've always put the Romex connector on the panel first and always was nervous when coming in from the top about the nut dropping. With the wire already going through, the nut will stay around the leads. I just subscribed due to your great way of explaining things.

      If you really wanted to you can make a 120V outlet wired with 240V. Yes switching power supplies like my computer's PSU has dual voltage and is slightly more efficient on 240V but don't plug anything else in it! (or just don't do that) Maybe if you have a crypto miner you'd run them 240 volts with the appropriate plug.

    Great video, as someone who does DIY more from a necessity than because its fun, (Sometimes it is)
    this video helped tremendously.
    "The biggest misconception is the 220-volt outlet. Is it 220 or 240 volts?. Well, nowadays it's 240 volts. "
    Your right, that this is definitely something that confused me.
    I was wanting to install a plug for a welder/breaker.. and I was wondering
    how I'd go about it, now I know!
    My only question is, why do plugs have the "keyed" shapes, if.. how you hook up the "hots", don't matter?
    Like what's the purpose of that then?
    Thanks for your time!

    • @Askmediy
      @Askmediy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The two hots that come in the panel are the same hot, but they are 180 degrees apart. Each one is 120 volts.

    • @Askmediy

      Those shapes (slots) are so the hot and neutral can only go one way. In other words, can't be flipped.

  • @mountainbiketim
    @mountainbiketim 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Nice video and well explained. Especially about the outlet itself and how there is not a neutral and how both hots are connected. I didn't realize you can run an outlet with 2 hots and no neutral. It looks like you are using 12/2 wire? When would 10/2 be required? I thought you needed 10/2 for 240V 20A? Can you use the smaller gauge wire for shorter runs? I'm running a 50 foot line to my garage for a 240V for an EV charger. I picked up 10/2 for the job. The charger pulls 16 amps.

      @inspirehomeslosangeles6099 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      same question. Other 240 Volt outlet requires a Neutral but for This NEMA 6-20 doesn't require a neutral?

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby ปีที่แล้ว

      A 240v line consists of two 120v positives, and they are 180-degrees out of phase with each other. Each of these hot wires take turns being the return path to the transformer outside the house as the juice alternates back and forth. With 120v circuits, this circumstance doesn't exist ... you only have one phase with no corresponding return path unless the neutral wire is used.
      In other words, 240v AC "creates its own" return path by definition of how its two positives act (because, being 180-degrees apart in phase, they are not identical positives even if their voltages are each 120.)

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inspirehomeslosangeles6099 Part of it is convention, part of it is requirement ... if the appliance has its own internal transformer it can create a 120v AC source to power an internal clock or other display. This is what electric ranges and electric dryers do, if they use a 3-wire 240v cable. They don't need an external neutral because it exists inside the appliance.
      If they don't create an internal 120v source, they'll need an external neutral as part of the equation. A 4-wire 240 connection also provides an extra measure of safety if the ground isn't healthy.

    Good video. I have a 3 car garage/ man cave fully insulated, ceilings too and even the garage doors. Garage is about 660 sq ft with 8ft celing hight. The lowest tempature during Christmas will be 37 degrees farenhight. My questions is if I install a 5000-7000w electric heater, I have to installed a 240v outlet too right or it can be just hardwired??
    Eventually I will buy a minisplit system and be getting rid of the electric heater. Will I be able to use the 240v outlet previously installed for electric heater when I install mini split in future??
    Also we will be getting an electric car down the road so I will need a 240v outlet to charge car so what will be the correct pathway for my projects, install a 240v right now for electric heater so I have heater in man cave before Christmas or maybe just use propane heater just for that day🙄 until I figure out what minisplit system to buy??

    Great video! Right to the point. Is it within code (or an okay idea) to go from the circuit breaker to a junction box in an attic and then split the circuit to be at two receptacles on either side of my garage? I want to run two tools on either side of the garage not at the same time, but don't want to take up the space in the panel with a dedicated circuit.
    Also, say I did want to run the two tools at the same time - they are 6-20P plugs 12 amps - could I install a 30 amp breaker connected to two 20 amp receptacles?

    I wired an outlet just like this years ago for a compressor....now, I have a new compressor and only need 120v. If my understanding is correct I really only need to remove the marking tape from my white wire, attach the white to the neutral bus bar, and then wire in a 120v outlet...correct?
    I think I might drop in two 120v breakers and run a 3 wire with ground, and then change out my box so I can have 2 outlets, each with their own protection.

    Thank you for the great tutorial. A couple questions: another video said to have the ground on top and the two hots on the bottom. They said it protects it if the cord gets hit or if water drips on it. I don’t quite understand that. You mentioned code and identifying the two hot wires…are there other NEC codes (for a simple install like your demonstration) that we should know about? I.e. fireproof grommet through the panel knockout or using a plastic vs a metal box for your switch. If you have the space on your panel can you install any size amp? Ex. 240v 50 amp double pole single throw switch without worrying about if there is enough power coming into the panel (dumb question but I, for one, don’t actually know how much juice I have coming into my house). Thank you very much for any clarification you can bring as I am about to install a 240v outlet next to my panel for my air compressor.

      Could you yes. Would I? No. Just think about the amp draw.

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby ปีที่แล้ว

      Pig tails/wire nuts are OK. But Leviton and others do make duplex receptacles for 240 that use the same plug style and have a 2nd pair of screws on the back.
      The concept of adding additional outlets is the same as for 120 ... when using any of them, stay below the load limit or the breaker will trip. In this example the circuit is 20A.
      When you see a house with 2-3-4 or whatever 15A outlets on the same 15A breaker, any ONE of them could max out the breaker, depending on the appliance being powered up. But, they know most people never use more than one thing at a time that uses big power.
      For example, the reason why you can use TV, phone charger, desk lamp all on the same circuit is because added up they likely don't go over the load limit. Now add a hair dryer and things change.
