  • Fair WARNING! This is a long one. Way too long. But I was enjoying myself and riffing away and the time just flew by. Feel free to skip about or skip off to Carl's next vid ;)
    Having said all that. This is a video I have been wanting to make for a while now. Comparing a damn good pair of raw selvedge denim jeans with a pair of "fashion" jeans that cost the same.
    It's interesting what I found out.

    I had a decent pair of Diesel selvedge denim jeans years ago. I remember discovering them in TK Maxx. I was overjoyed. Selvedge wasn't really a thing yet, and it was hard to come by. Loved those jeans. One of my other interests is shaving, I make a whole ritual out of it, hot towels, artisan soaps, vintage safety razors, ancient fragrances etc. There are forums, youtube videos, the whole thing. Seems to me that it's very similar to wearing good denim, a very similar buzz of nostalgia and pleasure in quality. Really hard to describe. You could take a look at men's fragrances as part of your output. It's a whole different world.

      This is nice! Didn't know about the shaving thing. I have been using fast fashion for years and now I'm jumping into high quality, durable garments. Not flashy, fancy brands. I'm interested in the materials and manufacturing process.

    Late to the party but I needed this vid, thanks. I'm no brand snob but Armani always fit me like I was their model for designing them, I knew the differences, knew it's mainly about the name for them, but was happy because nothing fit me better and 5 years life to me is ok because I batter them. Few years out of it, come back to find they're all under the Armani Exchange name, they don't seem the same, I've worn them long enough to know. I didn't like what I bought. Time for me to take jeans a bit more seriously till I find my new favourites. Your channel is helping me learn more, thanks

    Armani does have selvedge denim, raw denim and even made in italy denim. In the fashion luxury brands you first pay for branding and then anything else is just extra luxury. People wear armani to get compliments and also to signal to people that they are wearing jeans from an expensive brand. Denimheads forget most people don’t know what selvedge is or the quality of jeans. People usually buy luxury brands because it’s a status symbol.

  • @tonysoprano4883

    Those are Emporio Armani jeans, not the same as Giorgio Armani jeans. They are owned by Giorgio Armani but not the same level of quality. I don't own anything from Armani or Emporio but I think a pair of Giorgio Armani jeans would be a bit better than Emporio.

  • @iam_juls
    @iam_juls ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I feel like this needs to be addressed as I don’t believe it is in the video (correct me if I’m wrong and it is noted in the vid) but it should be noted that the “Armani” denim being reviewed is Emporio Armani which is a lesser/more affordable sub-brand variant of Giorgio Armani. These are by no means the same as a pair of “Giorgio Armani” jeans

    Would really be interested to see a comparison like this, but with a standard Levi’s 501 (non-stretch) that can be purchased at times for $30-$40, instead of high fashion +$200
    As a new dad myself, I’ve found myself recently considering wearing some rather than my multiple pairs of raw Japanese pairs. Maybe just becoming harder to justify the cost?
    Congrats on the news and keep the content coming!

    • @CeeAreDee
      @CeeAreDee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Brett. Appreciate it buddy. Yeah. I’m also thinking of doing a vid on something similar. Maybe the 501s or a super cheap selvedge pair on Amazon maybe. In regards to the coast. I’ll admit that I think twice about dropping 500 bucks on a few things these days. Thinking where that money would be better spent. But if you’ve got a few pairs then you’ll be good for jeans for the foreseeable future, no?

    • @rduderacer3410
      @rduderacer3410 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d go with putting up the Premium line of 501 in the comparison. They are sold at a moderately higher price point than the base 501 but have some respectable upgrades in build quality and features that can be a real value at the Levi’s outlets or at the well executed Levi’s online store. And even better deal when scored at a 30% or more on discount.

    Constructive criticism from someone who’s watched every video you’ve released on this channel:
    Yes; your videos do tend to go on too long, and yes; it does make them less accessible. I appreciate that you’re going for a blog-like feel, but being a little more structured/organised would help. Little things like locating the pair of 3Sixteens in advance, or setting up lighting prior to hitting record will help reduce the duration without compromising the conversational tone of your videos. You don’t have to (and I wouldn’t want you) rehearse or script the entire video, but giving yourself the best platform in which to deliver the subject matter in a punchy way would really make it easier to ingest, at least for me.

    • @luismendoza6983
      @luismendoza6983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agree on the “unstructured” style of the video. I feel there’s too much info that is irrelevant, like you having to look for jeans for forever just to show us the jeans or heritage wear you have all over the place, that you own all pairs in all styles, until you make a video about them, no one is going to search the models for 316.
      Love the channel and will continue to support you because you do provide information that the community needs. Most heritage wear channels die or stop making vids and I applaud you for continuing to do what you love and providing how to guides to all.

He has knowledge and will to share, which is very cool - he would benefit to go to the point and not focus on his Zalando order or stuff like this. Also we can not say that he is charismatic, so why all this buzz about himself?

    I never buy fake-faded jeans and/or "distressed" (torn). They're unnatural! The one you put on has a fade that no human being would make with their actual legs! And of course, every-body is different and when it doesn't line up, it looks ridiculous. I have never understood it. And that price! For that? There are ways of buying quality without spending a fortune. But to buy something with no quality, that's literally torn for a fortune? That's nuts.

    Congrats on the baby! My wife and I had our second child a week ago today. 😁
    I think that both pairs are expensive and both of them are a flex, each to a separate identity. The selvedge ID, the runoff stitching, etc are all visible brand identifiers that show you as a member of the denim-head tribe, just the same as the Armani eagle identifies one in the designer/yuppie/nouveau-riche crowd. Sure, from the perspective of a denim-head, you're getting more value with 3Sixteen, as they are going to last a lot longer; or that is to say, they will have a lower cost per wear over the lifetime of the jeans. But this is a disingenuous argument, it at the very least an incomplete reason; if the cost per wear were truly the deciding factor in which jeans to buy, then we'd all be buying secondhand wrangler's, or some ugly shit like that.
    Basically, I am arguing the same as you stated in this video, though I don't think truly believed it when you said it... it's all a value proposition based on one's perspective. We value certain things based on the tribes we belong to, and demonstrate belonging through certain identifiers. Both pairs of jeans are opposite sides of the very same coin: costly signifiers to allow those around us who are "in the know" to know we are one of them.
    That said, I do have some designer denim that I've found good value out of: Tom Ford. They are rugged, hard wearing and do place emphasis on the denim they use, the location and quality of their manufacturing, as well as their retro styling. They have lines of Japanese selvedge which are pretty nice, and all of their jeans are either assembled in Los Angeles or in Italy.
    Thank you for the in-depth review. I would encourage a bit more of the fat being trimmed in editing, though I can appreciate the Kerouac-style stream of consciousness. Enjoy the new baby, it goes by so quickly!!!🎉🎉🎉

    Wouldn’t it be distressing rather than a wash in the case of the Armani?
    I tend to feel that although denim heads can be a bit snobby and “one up-ie” when showing of the salvedge cuff, etc, they truly respect the quality and bespoke feel of breaking in a pair that is there’s and only there’s. Even if you pick up a pair second hand or score vintage, they are quality; but someone else put in the work and you benefit from the fact that the jeans endure.
    I feel the Armani crowd are purely interested in shouting- “I’m rich enough to wear Armani, so look at me!” Next year it will be another look at me, over priced flavor for the season.

    I reside in a very warm area in the States. Heavy denim will not work at all. Even in the winter, unless o go to a place with snow or really cold weather they will not be worn. I avoid Emporio Armani just as I avoid Ralph Lauren. Probably made in the 3rd world for a few dollars and sold for hundreds of dollars to naive brand hunters. If you want Italian jeans - try those which are 100% made in Italy using Japanese or Italian denim. IMHO.

    I like your videos, but the first 10 minutes of this one didn’t need to be included.

      Well. Yes and no. I mean, in a way of imparting the essentials of the info, you’re totally right. It was superfluous. However, I’m still learning this stuff and also still having fun with it which is the driving force behind making these. The first 10 mins taught me a lot and made a lot of fun when filming and editing. Things I can apply to future videos.

      @@CeeAreDee I see. Well, I really liked the subject of this one. I laugh at jeans that I see put out by high-end and/or luxury brands for $300+ that are light, thin, and aren’t even selvedge; basically just really luxurious toilet paper.

    3Sixteen wins here, without question. But I don't like their back pockets. The runoff detail...I just don't get it 🤷‍♂️ Not really off-putting per'se, but not attractive/alluring either.

      I think it’s good to see it in the context of the times they were looking for a “signature” pocket design. Levi’s were sueing anyone with even a hint of an arc and other brands were coming up with weird and wonderful pocket designs. 3sixteen looked to the more minimalist side. They were trying to do something contemporary with raw denim at a time when most others were either going repro or damn weird.

    Well I think that the raw denim does not look as good as the other jeans. And of course it won’t be as comfortable at first. I think there is just a following for this raw denim and people pay crazy money for it. When personally I can get a nice pair of Abercrombie or Hollister jeans and they are very comfortable and fit well

      That is a fair point but as with everything else, there are some people that really like and enjoy Selvedge denim. It is true that there are non-selvedge denim that is good too

    Wow those Armani jeans just seem generic. I’d be disappointed paying all that money for an Italian brand not made in Italy. It’s just been done to squeeze as much profit as possibly. Because if you can buy a Japanese/ American made product both countries have high labour costs there’s no excuse.

    👎🏻 Long video with tremendous detail BUT WHY DID YOU SELECT DISTRESSED ARMANI JEANS vs NON DISTRESSED 3SIXTEEN??? So therefore your video is totally unvalid - STRUCK DOWN BY INITIAL POOR COMPARISON CHOICE… ESSENTIALLY A WASTE OF TIME BECAUSE OF HORRENDOUS ERROR IN INITIAL COMPARISON SELECTION.
