Dale Jr and his sister Kelly CAN afford to sponsor a Cup team, they just can't be guaranteed that the price of the charter won't drop in 7 years when the NASCAR tv deal is up. They are NOT willing to take the chance of losing all that money. That is what Kelly said in a recent interview.
I would like the Charter system if NASCAR was a proper sports league with franchises, and not still technically a family business with a poor money-dispersal model. The initial buy-in should almost inherently pay for itself, unless you wreck every other race or something

Charter prices are negotiated by the seller and buyer. NASCAR has nothing to do with it. Crowds are noticeably bigger, TV ratings are going up and they just signed a $7.7 billion media rights deal.
