man, it's almost a crime that Mark never had his championship. For me the best driver that never won one, by far and wide. But he faced three beasts: early 90's Earnhardt, late 90's Gordon, late 00's Johnson
Glad someone finally made a video about this season, it was such a wild points battle that seems to have become relatively forgotten nowadays. The 2003 Busch Series season would make for a great video as well, it is very similar to the 2002 cup season in the fact that the points lead changed on a weekly basis late in the year.
Brother thank you for the walk down memory lane. The 02 season was a wild fun ride and unfortunately I missed a lot of it because I was in the Navy. It was also the first full season of NASCAR when I was pulling for a new favorite driver with Newman after we lost Dale. God I miss those days. But this was a hella good video thank you so much for taking the time to make it for us and I hope you are having a wonderful day and keep up the amazing work.
If you really want to do that, watch the S1apSh0es compilation of all of Mark's runner-up seasons. It will make you both proud of how he handled himself throughout his career, as well as realize that he was 3 bad races and a b.s. penalty away from being a 4 time champion.
@@gilliganallmighty3true but when you consider that the guys he finished runner up to would go on to win a total of 21 championships, it does show you that if you wanted to win a chip, you better make sure you're better than the bridesmaid
This is a great video. I love your point at the end about the point system changes. You should make a full video on that topic. I totally agree with your sentiment and think it's one of the biggest things keeping me from being a diehard NASCAR fan like I used to be. More points for wins, top 5s, and leading the most laps would have tweaked a system that made for a great sport.
And to think Sterling's bad luck with officiating would carry on into the 03 Daytona 500. Ken Squier had a fantastic line about Marlin. Marlin opened his own body shop on the Daytona back stretch
2008 ARCA Season video would be awesome. Justin Allgaier won the championship at Toledo Speedway, the last race of the season. Beating Scott Speed, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Frank Kimmel. Back when ARCA was great.
I went to Autumn Atlanta. Had breakfast eith Tony Stewart and Home Depot employees vip. Rain ended it early. Mark & Johnson were close. My father went to Talladega. Mark’s steering locked up in the opening laps and he was a lap behind for the entire race. Mark Martin lost the.championship because of Talladega.
Tony had probably the worst season for a champion in that era. He had the most DNFs for a champion in Winston Cup. But he made it happen due to all the stuff that happened to the other contenders.
as well said, seemed like no one wanted to win the title that year... I don't know if you are only a nascar fan or watch other stuff, but for a race like this, i highly recommend the Bathurst 1000 of 2014. Especially the work of Josh Revell on the race (th-cam.com/video/XMkzDMAP-80/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZzCSF87W0vLOw8Cc)
In my opinion this is what made nascar so great and awesome back then you jusy never knew what to expect for the championship battle now it's all manufactured don't get me wrong there are still good races and or finishes but peak nascar for me growing up was 1998-2015
As much as I like Stewart, I kinda wish Mark would have won it all in 2002 Latford himself suggested changes to his point system that would give more points for winning yet NASCAR never implemented his suggestions
If only Dale was still alive 😢. He definitely would have been a contender in 02 and likely would’ve retired in 03. But even to this day I still miss his ass, and Ik a lot of people miss him too.
I don't understand, why when Jimmie Johnson finished fifth in the standings in his debut season with 3 wins, and Ryan Newman came sixth with one win in his, why did Ryan Newman win Rookie of the Year in 2002?
It's been a long time since I've read exactly how this works. But from what I remember, Rookie of the Year is in part determined by a certain number of "best" finishes (I'm wanting to say somewhere between 17 and 20). Ryan Newman had more "best" finishes than Johnson, but also more DNFs and "worst" finishes. As such, his greater "worst" finishes put him lower in points; but the "worst" finishes didn't count for purposes of determining "Rookie of the Year". As a simplified example, suppose Rookie 1 had finishes of 1st, 40th, and 10th; and Rookie 2 had finishes of 2nd, 15th, and 14th. In terms of points, Rookie 2 will be higher due to Rookie 1's 40th place finish in race 2. However, Rookie 1 finished higher than Rookie 2 in 2 out of 3 races (race 1 and race 3). And this is what counted for purposes of Rookie of the Year. Plus, a portion of it is also determined by a panel that takes into account the rookie's conduct with officials, track conduct, media acumen, and personal appearance.
Newman had 14 top fives compared to Johnson's 6, and 22 top tens to Johnson's 20. He also led in more races. Only reason Johnson beat him in points (by only seven points) was because he had two more top 20's. Until sometime in the playoff era, rookie points were different from regular points, and were based on your best 15 races. Which IMO produced better results. Under the current rules Dale Earnhardt would have lost ROTY to Joe Millikan and Alan Kulwicki would lose to Michael Waltrip.
Its weird 2 think that every year that in with a 2 had a great championship battle that ended kinda of anticlimactic. 1992 went from 6 to 2 in the first half the race. 2002 went from a 5 car fight to just tony by seasons end. 2012 had a great 3 car fight untill ism where boyer and Johnson Championship bid went away, 2022 was one of the closer(on paper) championship 4's only for logano to dominate from start to finish with bell and Elliott taking themselves out of contention. So look out 2032 lol
I agree with a format somewhat like it, but only the top 15 scoring. 50 or more percent of the field scoring is a lot... probably because I grew up with points being for the very best in F1. Top 8 in a field of usually 22

Kurt Busch's rally in the last 10 races was something
It really was. He was strong on those tracks and I think it helped a ton in 2004
What’s even crazier? Jimmie Johnson who finished 5th in the Standings, lost to Ryan Newman who was 6th in the ROTY battle
And Jimmie had 3 wins to Newmans 0 lol
A great season is one competitive enough where the champion had an average finish of 12th, like 2002
2000 was a great year too
And Jimmie Johnson did not won Rookie of the Year just like Dale Jr. in 2000 2 of Chevrolet drivers.
Mark, he cool
It was only weird because Sterling Marlin got hurt. Otherwise he probably wins the title.
