Totally awesome! I met Chuck Berry after a show in St. Louis a few years ago (he always hangs out and talks to people afterwards). When I shook his hand I was totally in awe, and told him, "I'm shaking the hand of the man who started rock and roll". He goes, "and I'm shaking the hand of one of the guys that's gonna keep it going". How cool is that :)

The camera doesn’t realize that Eric and Keith aren’t the only stars on the stage. It takes the camera almost 6 minutes to get a shot of Johnnie Johnson, the greatest rock and roll piano player ever, who literally carries the whole session. If you can, don’t watch the images and just listen to Johnnie tear it up.

Nah Chuck didn't have a clue what's going on. He thought it was a live take for the documentary. He tries to play in different keys, he mimics the other musicians and feigns respect for Johnnie Johnson. The guy's a prick. Watch the DVD versions with 2 and 4 extra hours footage. He almost ruined the concert by ruining his voice. There's Nothing nice about him but I love his guitar work.

@@grimmertwin2148 You got that right. I was at the show at the fox theater in St. Louis ( and it was being filmed by Taylor Hackford ( Director of ' An Officer and a Gentleman " ) and Chuck Berry was a total egotistical jerk....doing things his way and constantly changing things....people on stage and off were getting upset at his antics....I heard Keith who had done all the planning shouting at Chuck Berry repeatedly...even pleading for Chuck to take it seriously ' this is for prosperity man ! ' when Chuck would shout' it's MY birthday' and then do something crazy and disrupting everybody else's rhythm......it was actually a bad concert cause almost every song was stopped and redone.

That's not being humble -that's being truthful. Chuck started it all but no one wanted to admit it back then because he was a black man.The blues came from black men and Rock n roll derived from the blues in which Chuck invented.Im a white man here to say "Elvis was not the King. Chuck Berry was and always will be!! " No diss to Elvis at all. Elvis was an awesome artist and legend -but no "KING" im afraid. God rest both their souls.

@@buckwild6759 It's kinda disappointing...I don't claim to be a great guitarist but I have to been playing Johnny B Goode since 1976, based on the original recording...got to be a bit boring so I have gradually embellished it. I have only just recently looked at Berry's live stuff and....WTF! I would be too ashamed to play if I was that bad. He always seems to have another guitarist playing the "signature" licks and relies on the pianist a lot.

Funny thing though all due respect to Chuck Berry, whenever he was jamming like in this session he would always add extra notes to his guitar licks. and add other embellishments to his music. not that anything is wrong with that a lot of musicians do that. it just made him a little unpredictable to work with. Keith Richards even mentioned it in an interview. he said that he was almost as hard to work with as Mick Jagger. but he still liked him a lot. that's part of what made Chuck Berry so incredible was that he was always trying to improve himself.

This was shot in St. Louis as part of the rehearsals for the concert movie "Hail Hail Rock & Roll". There were some tunes shot at the Cosmo Club in East St. Louis ( reopened just for the film ) that didn't make it into the movie. Hope that some day the outtakes will be released. One of them had Chuck doing a pantomime while the band vamped. It was great ... he was a total entertainer. Sure he could be irrassable at times, but he could also be gracious and understanding. It's not widely known, but for many years Chuck would travel to Jefferson City, Missouri, and play for the inmates at the Algoa medium security prison where he had done a stretch as a teenager. Long may Chuck Berry Rock, and long may Johnny Johnson Roll!

I turned on my twin reverb, tuned up the strat and jammed for a few hours to "Johnny b goode", "rock and roll music" and "roll over Beethoven". it was a normal practice to some great rock classics and I thought nothing of it. then when I got a text from a musically uneducated friend that read "someone called chuck berry has died u might know him idk" I ceased and started thinking of what I was doing earlier on that day... I like the thought and the idea that i was remembering him and paying tribute to him myself just before he died... the true father of rock and roll. RIP
