Congrats Jules - for those of us out there who are collectors, with the collectors' mentality (who understand your patience, persistence + perseverance), we share your joy - on to the next 1,000!
Congrats SIR!!!!!! I know it feels to complete a collection, Its was you who inspired me to complete my Target Doctor Who Paperbacks, and when I finished purchasing the last one it was another proud moment for me. Congrats again.
Congratulations. A fantastic collection. You inspired me to get into collecting books again and look forward every week to your latest video. Thank you for all the time you give preparing and presenting your collection and videos.
Conratulations Jules. That's real dedication to the cause and an inspiration for all us collectors who are amateurs by comparison. It was good to follow your long journey which, of course, doesn't end here. Great stuff.
Thanks Kenny. It does put some of my other collecting runs in perspective. I always knew it was going to be a long haul but I'm delighted to have finally licked one of paperbacks most extreme challenges. Glad you enjoyed that collecting journey, another bombshell to come next week🙂
A Holy Grail, of sorts, Jules. How extraordinary that you've dedicated a goodly portion of your life to such an ethereal pursuit. It must feel so good! Cheers.
Absolutely incredible. Many many congratulations on your achievement! It was a hell of a journey, and now you have an amazing library that is sure to harbor historical literary significance!!
@@JulesBurt And now for the next thousand right? I have found myself looking at Penguin paperbacks with new eyes since watching you channel, so thanks for your videos.
Funny you mention the book shop in Plymouth. I have also been to that bookshop and had a similar experience as the chap was selling paperbacks 3 for £5 (same price 20 years later!) and I bought an entire bag of SF vintage paperbacks and went back the next day again for another bag full.
Congratulations Jules, what a collection!!! I can't even begin to imagine what a 39 year journey being completed must feel like - Overjoyed? Relieved? Thinking what's next? Speaking of which, what is next for your collection? Best, JC
@@JulesBurt Good luck with the next 1000 Jules, I did catch that shortly after writing my comment. Well done again, I hope the next block are a bit easier to source?
Congrats on completing the 1k. My copy of Day of the Triffids is from the 1970's. Money was always tight so never really got a proper collection. I tried to get the New Wessex paperback editions of Thomas Hardy when they were issued by Macmillan but I may have missed a few.
Love this Jules! Huge congrats again! I talked about Ariel on my Reading the First 1000 Penguins series-such a brilliant and underrated book! So many hidden gems in the first 1000 aren’t there? Thanks for the great content and for inspiring my own series!
You should think about replacing the right shelf. All the boards are bended and even the top on. I had the same problem and the shelf broke down out of nothing damaging some of my books
As usual, another very interesting and informative video, Jules. Thanks for sharing your first 1000 Penguin odyssey with us, and once again, congrats! BTW - any thoughts about making a video discussing the "Travel and Adventure" cerise and white Penguins? Along with the beloved Green Crime and Detective Fiction Penguins, those pink ones always catch my eye and interest. Just a thought.
Thanks Jeff, it's certainly been a journey and this Sunday's video might blow your mind! It takes at least 39 years to fully establish for yourself what a "rare" book actually is. 99% of books described as such are not rare, but you don't know that until you initiate your journey. That "Death on the Borough Council" is genuinely rare can now be verified. All the more surprising since it was a "mass market" paperback, not some limited edition. WWII was a rough time for books.
Love this! I finally got a chance to watch it from beginning to end, apologies for the late response. So interesting and fun to hear the story! Question: Will you embark on another long term collection now or will you just focus on filling in smaller series that are relatively easier to complete? Again, my congratulations on reaching this goal! 🎉
As soon as paper rationing kicked in during the second world war. So about 1941. Things got tough in the UK, the paper got much poorer quality as well.
Just wondering actually, do you own any of the other Penguin imprints? I know you've covered most of the Pelicans and Puffins but I think at one stage there were Peacock, Peregrine and even Ptarmigan books too, just wondered if you owned any of those?
Congrats Jules - for those of us out there who are collectors, with the collectors' mentality (who understand your patience, persistence + perseverance), we share your joy - on to the next 1,000!
Thanks my friend. Yes, the second thousand bekons! 🙂
A video 39 years in the making! Thanks for sharing your journey. The details are what collectors love to hear. Great, great accomplishment!
Thanks Richard, it's been quite the trip🙂
Seriously riveting! I've never seen your channel before and I'm not much of a reader these days, but here we are!! Well done 👏😀
Thanks my friend!
What a amazing story. So happy for you Jules. 39 years, and had to sweat the last few days for the last one. I can imagine. Way to go Jules. 👍👍
Thanks Alvin, there were a few tense moments, that's for sure🙂 So pleased that run is now completed, it's been a journey 👍
Wonderful retelling of your labors, trials, and ultimate triumph. Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful collection! I’m so pleased you got there in the end! Couldn’t have happened to a nicer fella! 👏

Congratulations Jules! Here’s to the next 1000 ?! 😊
I don’t have space to collect books anymore, so this is enjoyable to watch !
Thanks Mark. Even though I don't have the space there's always room for more books🙂

He was 3 for £5 when he opened and has recently gone back to that price point. At last🙂
Your shop Purple Haze sounds wonderful
It was great, I'm planning on producing a Purple Haze video soon.
Wow...that was like a Netflix thriller lol....
It was tense!
@squid4104 It was indeed! 😄

Great stuff, I think my first Triffids was the BBC tie in.
So happy for you Jules, and thanks for the interesting video. Can we please see some closeups of the actual book out of the bag? That would be great!
Indeed I shall do some up close shots when I give it a gentle clean on my next monthly pick ups video 🙂

Well, I started with about ten, it just sorted of carried on and on...

When did they stop putting dust wrappers on their books?
As soon as paper rationing kicked in during the second world war. So about 1941. Things got tough in the UK, the paper got much poorer quality as well.
Just wondering actually, do you own any of the other Penguin imprints? I know you've covered most of the Pelicans and Puffins but I think at one stage there were Peacock, Peregrine and even Ptarmigan books too, just wondered if you owned any of those?
Yes, I have all the Ptarmigans and some Peacock and Peregrine's, but not many.
Bitter sweet
It's ok, onto the next thousand now🙂
When you repair the spines, doesn't that diminish the value? I thought collectors were very much against repairs of any kind.
Not at all but it's very much a personal choice.
Do you actually read them or just put them up on a shelf?
I read about 150 a year. Not all Penguins of course.

Thanks 🙂
