I am curious to know if Elizabeth changed her mind on the whole divorce thing , I wonder how things would've turned out for Margaret . She obviously loved Peter and he loved her back and the fact that I guess he was divorced was a bad thing ? if only they made the ok for them . Margaret led a sad life being in the shadow of the Queen ,and she wanted one thing and that was to get married to the man she absolutely loved .
I don't get something. Elizabeth denied the marriage because she's the head of the Church of England, right? Wasn't the CE started by Henry VIII, who did it so he could divorce and marry as he pleased? So why is the CE against letting divorcees marry? What's the point of being a queen or princess if you can't do what you want?
cshubs . technically he nullified his marriage to Cathrine on the grounds that it was illegal in the eyes of the church. the pope disagreed so henry broke with rome. apprently he found a passage in the bible that said a man should not marry his brother widow. he nullified his marriage to anne of cleeves because they didnt consummate the marriage. a nullification is like it never happen.
Henry VIII is a bad example and precedent for how the CoE should behave. So no monarch really wanted to duplicate it or come close to him. Since Edward VIII had to abdicate only 20-25 yrs before, Elizabeth II was very careful and the times' mores were strict about this issue. For a monarch or heir to marry someone divorced was verboten. The divorces of Charles and Andrew also softened the view on this as well as the way Margaret's life went. I'm not sure what upset royal courtiers more: that Ms. Markle was divorced, American or biracial. Still, Harry is currently 6th in the line of succession (Charles, William and William's kids precede him) and the fact that he's further from the throne than when Margaret wanted to marry Peter Townsend probably had some influence.
Henry VIII was an absolute monarch; he could do as he pleased without being questioned. It became constitutional monarchy after Queen Anne (early 1700s), and there are certain protocols the crown must now follow
The whole thing is a misconception in what she had to give up. Not too long ago it was found that the Queen and her council had drawn up a plan In which Margaret would be allowed to keep all her privileges as princesses if she married Peter. However, she would have had to forfeit her and any children she had place in the line of succession.
I've also heard this account. Something tells me they ( the Queen and Government ) never mentioned this prospect to her. I would like to believe, if Margaret had know of these planes, she would have jumped at the chance to mary the love of her life.
I read somewhere that Margaret told her biographer she ended it because the love wasn't as strong enough after they were separated while he was in Belgium. This makes sense but still very sad that the royal family even made this happen.
This show is so frustrating sometimes. There was an agreement made and an amendment of that law where Princess Margaret would be able to marry Townsend without losing her titles or place in the family. The only thing she would lose was her place in the line of succession and her children would not be in the line of succession. With Elizabeth having 2 children, there wasnt any real belief that Margaret would attain the crown. She would still be Princess Margaret, be able to work for the royal family, and would recieve an allowance like other members of the royal family. What really stopped her was that she changed her mind, plain and simple. This was not the Queen's fault, and while I disagree with her religious reasons and how they stopped everything, she still made it possible for her sister to marry Townsend. They literally got support to change the law in parliament. This show is good, but it makes me angry when they try to pass blatant inaccuracies as facts
Because that would get in the war of a good story. The Crown's traditions are evil, story ends there. Saying that Margret chose status over love wouldn't make a good plot. The real tragedy here is the people who actually believe this fiction as real history rather than do their own research.

Bingo. PT’s ex was still alive so he was considered still married. When Charles married Camilla he was seen as a widower not a divorcee. The Church says/said marriage can only be dissolved by death, not divorce. They don’t recognize the civil/légal of marriage.
They didn't let her marry the love of her life, friend of her father and war hero just because he was divorced. But they did let her marry a man who cheated on her (she cheated on him too, okay) and was probably bisexual. So so unfair... I think she was never truly happy without Peter.
Margaret could've married the love of her life. But she didn't want to give up her place in line. She made her choice and she chose wrong. Only a foolish and vain woman would sacrifice true love and a chance at real happiness for a title that would never amount to anything.
It seems like the queen likes to take control of everyone else's lives, but when it comes to her own children and grand children she goes "oh sure my little cutie, you can have whatever you want my loveydovey even if it means changing the laws of the monarchy because you know mommy is queen!" Lol.
Not really. The Anglican Church modernized quite a lot in the 60s under the influence of Vatican II, just like the Catholic Church. The church rules were quite different from the 70s on so the Queen's children didn't run into a lot of the same stumbling blocks as Margaret did in the 1950s.
I didn't know the actual history beforehand so I watched the two as if it's a romance movie and I was rooting for them. But after all, this is a historical show and history is unforgiving :( Vanessa Kirby is PRETTY but what caught my attention first was her last name- I knew Kirby as the Nintendo character
It’s not entirely accurate, Margaret was given the choice to marry him in the consequence that she would loose her title and place in the family. She chose not to marry him in order to keep her life and I’m pretty sure Peter backed her decision.

why couldn't she just leave her home and marry him? She wanted all the luxuries and love. She had a choice and she chose money. Nothing wrong with it but I don't think she gets any sympathy
Because of this trauma Princess Margaret would eventually become radicalized, dye her hair blonde and take up arms dealing under her new name: the White Widow.
This is not the "Woe is me" story that Margaret and the history books made it out to be. Margaret was told that she could marry Peter, but only if she gave up all of her royal priviledges and her place in the succession line. She refused to do that on her own accord, and broke up with Peter instead. SHE MADE THE CHOICE.
Never in the field of human conflict was so much been owed by so many to so few... Bullshit Bullshit mega Bullshit.. They should have allowed the marriage...
this is where i feel u can spot the succes of king george the 6th as monarch and queen elizabeths failure , king george let his daughter marry the man she loved , because the when the day comes and she becomes queen she will need a strong pillar by her side despite the fact the prince phillips background was not big problem , still he let her marry phillip despite the reservations from everybody , and queen elizabeth did not have the same foresight as her father

Hmm. Tragic love story. The Queen probably looking out for her sister he was alot older then her though she was probably a young adult by the time they got together. The rules were different then. She probably fresh into her reign
She could of married Peter if she had wanted too but she was a selfish little brat who was far more in love with being a princess. She would not give that up for anyone even the man she claimed to love
She picked crown over self. Something that Elizabeth, Philip and Margaret had to do. She didn't want to end up basically in exile away from all her family and the country she was raised in. She would've been in a situation similar to her uncle which we all know that they seemed pretty miserable and unhappy.
@@smellycat264 The power of love isn't as great as you think it is. The west has romanticized it to the point where it's the most powerful thing in the world and it is simply not. Ask yourself if YOU could abandon your family and your friends and your identity, never to see them again for the sake of one person. It's a huge risk to take. It's easy to say they would've been so much better off, but I doubt it
I don’t find the romance of Margaret and Townsend at all touching. In the show it’s certainly portrayed like she was pursuing him when he was still married. The reunion scene between them was very awkwardly filmed, not at all romantic or erotic for that matter. To see an intense emotional love scene of star-crossed lovers watch Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis in Witness. Now that was well done.
Pradnya Meow i think cause he was a divorced man and then you could not marry if your spouse was still alive. For example the abdication crisis with king edward and wallis simpson.
Peter was a divorced man and it was quite frowned upon to be such. Queen Elizabeth was in support of it as it was her sister and of course you'd like to have your family members happy. But at the same time, the crown had to win, as Queen Mary's letter stated to the Queen in this series and with the Duke of Windsor's abdication still fresh in the minds of everyone in England, along with the Queen Mother's anger towards him for hastening her husband's death (King Geroge VI) because of much pressure of the crown, the Queen had to have her feelings put aside for the sake of the country, as Princess Margaret was next in line for the crown, had anything happened to The Queen and her son, Prince Charles.
she was marrying a divorced man whilst also being the sister of the queen of england who was supposed to be acting on all laws of the crown which was passed. In the episode gelignite, the queens secretary states that Goegre III passed the royal marriges act of 1772 which meant that the church was in a position to refuse any marrige which would be deemed unacceptable with the moral values of that time. The church took that as their purpose and they acted upon that. That is why the queen refused her to be married to peter if margaret wanted to remain part of the family. that all changed in 2002 before charles married camilla and harry married meghan. t was also due to the tolerence of attitudes at the time as well
Why is no one blaming Peter tho. He was not a responsible man. He was a royal staff. He had no morals and definitely didn’t took his job seriously. He destroyed her. I am so upset with him. he wasn’t suppose to let the relationship happen in the first place.. he knew what will happen all along and he allowed it, he even enjoyed it the media attention.

@@LadyCheshire95 why did he divorce Anne Boleyn?

i actually think peter twonsend wouldve been great for margaret. they really loved each other
And she remained lost for the rest of her life
When she read the letter again when she was old killed me :(
Ah, the lush voice of the Divine Sarah Vaughan is the perfect complement.
The whole thing is a misconception in what she had to give up. Not too long ago it was found that the Queen and her council had drawn up a plan
In which Margaret would be allowed to keep all her privileges as princesses if she married Peter. However, she would have had to forfeit her and any children she had place in the line of succession.
Just goes to show dunnit......
Never heard this. But her kids were far down the line. She should have done it.

"I'm mad for you. Me, too."
I think it will be interesting to see how The Crown portrays their 1992 reunion
davidpar2 they saw each other again after he left the country?
Emma Barthy yes; look up the “Margaret and Townsend” documentary here on TH-cam. It features their reunion at the end
Or a sliding doors situation!
I want this so much!!!
The real tragedy here is the people who actually believe this fiction as real history rather than do their own research.
but why did Margaret say no to that?
@@itsflowerside Because unlike what this would have you believe she didn't love Townsend enough to give up her status for him.
I agree
If there was an amendment in the law then why didn't she marry him?
The two should have ended up together, very sad. But in the end, she chose money over love.
Peter didn't want her thrown out of the family, it was a mutual decision. He was the one who drafted her speech to the press
@@missyadams That's sad because Margaret would have been thrown out in name only, for the sake of the family's public image. Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and everyone respected Peter and knew he was a good man :( The couple shouldn't have worried about it.
No, she chose THE CROWN over love
Money? Liar. Her uncle won a title and earned an allowance. She would lose EVERYTHING, title and money. There is no comparison.
Remember that royalty only educated Elizabeth. Margareth received no education. How would I get a job? she would lose EVERYTHING, it didn't happen to her uncle

How did Charles get to have an affair and then married to Camillia but Margaret couldnt marry Peter.
Because times and mores change
His ex wife was dead

Very lovely...
Très bonne actrice.
It seems like the queen likes to take control of everyone else's lives, but when it comes to her own children and grand children she goes "oh sure my little cutie, you can have whatever you want my loveydovey even if it means changing the laws of the monarchy because you know mommy is queen!" Lol.
Kinda
The best comment...
Not really. The Anglican Church modernized quite a lot in the 60s under the influence of Vatican II, just like the Catholic Church. The church rules were quite different from the 70s on so the Queen's children didn't run into a lot of the same stumbling blocks as Margaret did in the 1950s.
And Queen Elizabeth herself watched this
Really?
He also cheated on her while they were seperated. I don't think that they would have been happy if they had actually be Wife and Husband.
are there any proofs for this?
she was betrayed by those whom she trusted...her family to whom she poured her heart out !! a life destroyed
I love them togerher ...
I didn't know the actual history beforehand so I watched the two as if it's a romance movie and I was rooting for them. But after all, this is a historical show and history is unforgiving :(
Vanessa Kirby is PRETTY but what caught my attention first was her last name- I knew Kirby as the Nintendo character
It’s not entirely accurate, Margaret was given the choice to marry him in the consequence that she would loose her title and place in the family. She chose not to marry him in order to keep her life and I’m pretty sure Peter backed her decision.
I watched this for the first time ever.. last night, I'm still on season one though.. But knowing that they won't end up together is heart breaking. They obviously love and adore each other.. Her family get to be with the one they love. Her sister get to be with the one she love.. But sadly for her... She can't and it is unfair...uggghhhh...😢😭
She could’ve just relinquish her titles like her uncle
I can relate 😭😭
Nice Sarah Vaughan song
this is
beautiful
Poor Margret you can tell that she can’t marrying him and he moved on so fast extremely broke her and even truamatized her 😢
I am a moderate Royalist, but it is right that some things have changed within the institution. A more humane approach to love for example. One can't help but feel a lot of sympathy for Townsend and Margaret especially with the false hope they were given.
when one realises he is Patrick in Coupling...

Hey! What the heck? I thought this was going to be about the guy from The Who.
Margaret was only 17 years old when she fall in love with Peter
I absolutely loved it, you need to make another one but this time with margaret and tony
Then he went off and joined The Who and lived happily ever after

Because of this trauma Princess Margaret would eventually become radicalized, dye her hair blonde and take up arms dealing under her new name: the White Widow.

What episode is 2:27 from?
And 2:41
This is not the "Woe is me" story that Margaret and the history books made it out to be. Margaret was told that she could marry Peter, but only if she gave up all of her royal priviledges and her place in the succession line. She refused to do that on her own accord, and broke up with Peter instead. SHE MADE THE CHOICE.

They wouldnt let margaret marry peter but prince charles remarried after di. So not an impossible thing. Poor marg

The actor who played Peter Townsend in The Crown was nowhere near as handsome as the real man IMO.

Very unfair....she had a very unhappy life because of her sister ......
Someone tell me in what chapter is this scene 1:12 ? Please
First chapter of the first season, "Wolferton Splash"
She could of married Peter if she had wanted too but she was a selfish little brat who was far more in love with being a princess. She would not give that up for anyone even the man she claimed to love
Shell By The Sea Who can blame her, being a princess is all she knows.
She picked crown over self. Something that Elizabeth, Philip and Margaret had to do. She didn't want to end up basically in exile away from all her family and the country she was raised in. She would've been in a situation similar to her uncle which we all know that they seemed pretty miserable and unhappy.
AlexxEnglishh At least she would’ve been with the love of her life. Fuck the crown 👑
AlexxEnglishh her uncle was happy! He spent his life with the women he loved!
@@smellycat264 The power of love isn't as great as you think it is. The west has romanticized it to the point where it's the most powerful thing in the world and it is simply not. Countless divorces occur due to financial reasons regardless of the amount of love in a marriage. Ask yourself if YOU could abandon your family and your friends and your identity, never to see them again for the sake of one person. It's a huge risk to take. It's easy to say they would've been so much better off, but I doubt it
What horror he is married in the series
Who sings this song?
Sarah Vaughan ("I'm Lost")
❤❤
I don’t find the romance of Margaret and Townsend at all touching. In the show it’s certainly portrayed like she was pursuing him when he was still married. The reunion scene between them was very awkwardly filmed, not at all romantic or erotic for that matter. To see an intense emotional love scene of star-crossed lovers watch Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis in Witness. Now that was well done.
Who sings the cover of “I’m lost”?
Sarah Vaughan
Why couldn’t she marry him???
That is why the queen refused her to be married to peter if margaret wanted to remain part of the family. that all changed in 2002 before charles married camilla and harry married meghan. t was also due to the tolerence of attitudes at the time as well
ktgbw amen 🙏

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Why is no one blaming Peter tho. He was not a responsible man. He was a royal staff. He had no morals and definitely didn’t took his job seriously. He destroyed her. I am so upset with him. he wasn’t suppose to let the relationship happen in the first place.. he knew what will happen all along and he allowed it, he even enjoyed it the media attention.
