+Neil Tipton Amen, brother. Most of them have lost the soul of real country in what is now pop music with an electric slide guitar thrown in for effect.
all I can say is what a voice, what a great talent, what a tragic shame that he was taken away so young..at the peak of his career, he was so unique God Bless his soul, RIP Kieth
The summer of 1988 I was just a kid working on music row. Keith drives up in a brand new Silver Corvette. I comment on the car, and he said "you wanna take it for a spin?" Me driving a new Corvette down 16th avenue with Keith Whitley riding shotgun. True story.
b. Jessie Keith Whitley July 1st,1955 Whitley survived a car crash (at 120 mph) and driving a car off a cliff into a river(1974--when he was 19!) He died from alcohol poisoning at his home on May 8, 1989 (age 34). So many great talents lost to that damn drug alcohol. TOO MANY! Married Lorrie Morgan (22 Nov 1986 - 9 May 1989) (his death) 1 child "When You Say Nothing at All" reached #3 on country charts and is a wedding standard. Love that man's voice. Thank you so much for the upload.
My wife and son left today, listening to old country legends id the only thing that makes me feel better...love the oldies...miss her already, but im ready to go now as long as its this music on the way the hell out!
Evil Clown71 this IS EXACTLY what country STILL sounds like. If ANYTHING from ANYONE'S mouth came out in the older times of this song it would sound JUST EXACTLY LIKE THE STUFF FROM THIS TIME ERA OF THIS SONG
A friend of my dad knew Keith personally whenever Keith came to Kentucky they would get together & have a jam session my dad's friend said that Keith was about as down home & a person can get. My dad's friend has recently passed so I know him & Keith are having a jam session in heaven & I know my mom is sitting right there listening to them & thinking of my dad how he would love to be there listening to the two of them
Back when this song came out, I was a young single mother, alone in the world with my one-year-old daughter. And I was scared of the world. Looking back now, I remember hearing this song...crying a few tears at time and singing along at other times. Three kids and two marriages later, I can look back on the years with many fond memories...some pain, and a lot of lessons learned. --And when I hear this song again, it's as if time has stood still, and I'm still 21 years-old...with my little daughter, Mia...right by my side.
Kieth Whitley was country music. Growin up on his music was a privledge for anybody like myself .Only Kieth could sing a song with so much soul. I still get angry when people comment on his life style because if you didn't know him personally how can you judge.
I love these old videos of Keith, with my husband Lou Toomey playing guitar. Lou was gearing up for another busy year of touring to support Keith in promoting his most successful album to date, when he heard the news on the radio. No one can match his vocals. For the past few years the band guys try to reunite every May to reminisce, catch up, and honor Keith's memory. Covid made 2020's reunion impossible, but hopefully they'll resume this year. RIP Keith
Hi Diana. Reading comments like this are so interesting to me, but at the same time it makes you wonder what if... It was great to read your comments about Keith and your husband Lou. Really enjoy his playing, especially on the live concert they did from Burlington North Carolina back in 1988. Lou definitely made that guitar talk/sing for sure!!
I will never forget I was 15 yrs old I'm 39 years old.. when it came on the radio he was gone i loved him then and love him today... still some of my favorite country music till this day... R.I.P. Keith .. we miss you..
I have loved this song for so long and loved Keith Whitley from the first time I saw and heard him. He was one of the most gifted performer we will ever see in country music. I get choked up just listening to him knowing what a talent we lost when he died, what a waste. Keith your memory lives on in every song I hear.
Missing my late husband whenever i hear this song.He passed away almost four years ago October 2013.This is one of his favorite song.He always sing it whenever get karaoke parties or family get together.
Not sure where all of this judgement about his character is coming from. His beautiful music came from within, and how he lived his life is only a small part of his story. And yes, a lot of the new artist could learn from his style, but few of them have actually experience his pain and will never come close to the quality songs he left us with in such a short span, he reminds me of Hank Williams of a different generation, but at least he respected the traditions .Let's face it, those of us who really like country music relate to the hurt and pain. The new songs about shiny green tractors and driving around in our pick up trucks does a disservice to the music most of us grew up on and love.
Joe, you really get it. No one sang with more raw emotion than Keith Whitley. It poured out of his soul like the tortured man he was. Green tractors? Is that the shit that passes for real country music nowadays? What a profound joke!
Joe Molaski I don't care about his demons. a lot of us have worse demons. That aren't as obvious. those that shine as bright as him. there demons are in the light. he went out just as he wanted.
Joe Molaski That was said perfectly. Country music was originally meant to be relatable. I don’t relate to driving a damn truck in the mud but I can definitely relate to the classic “old style” country. There will always be someone somewhere keeping country music alive.
I am sorry for your loss! Alcohol is so difficult to break away from! I am currently struggling, yet drinking to kill the pain! May God bless you and the Whitley family!
At the time of his death, he was my fav artist. I had tickets to go see him the year he died. But never got to see him. He passed away right before the concert. I was so sad when he died. I still sing and play his songs and listen to him on CD. We lost a great artist folks! He was true country for sure! Not like some of these artists now days. They try to mix rap with country. Give me a break. Can not believe that the Nashville studio producers are willing to record some of the crap that we have in today's country music!
I remember buying this album of Keith Whitley in early 1988, no one could come close to his singing and emotion, not even Garth or Tim or Alan or Clint, but you could tell they were very much influenced by him, No Doubt!
I am 55 years old. I cried like a baby when I got the news he was dead. He was an incredible entertainer, songwriter and singer. Tell Lorrie I love her.
God listens to this kind of music. it holds your heart. it keeps people like me alive. it brings us all closer to those who we love. even if they're no longer with us. if only they were.
I've heard some artists try to cover this, but nobody ever put the emotion into this song like Keith did. A tragic loss to country music and the world.
I was born exactly 3 months after he died(August 9th, 1989), such a shame. Keith is the greatest singer I've ever heard. More talent in his little finger than all the new country artists today combined.
Keith is the most talented singer then and now as we listen to his music and I commend Lorrie Morgan for all she did to help him with his addiction. I'm also heartbroken for her and their son for this tragedy.Inknow what it is to lose someone you love God Bless All of you
It always amazes me to see people who have not had the struggles in life that others have and pass judgement. The pressure to be an artist along with the pressures of everyday life. If some would just research all the famous people along with other high profile people they would be SHOCKED at how many were alcoholics or drug addicts. The pressure is overwhelming!
I can feel the pain in Keith's eyes and I know I have felt that same pain. He speaks to my heart and my soul. If heaven ain't a Keith Whitley concert, I don't want to go.
So glad you made a better choice. Life is a gift that if we appreciate, we WILL CHOOSE to make the most of it and allow God to use us to help others and we can't feel sorry for ourselves if we realize all those who have so much less. Blessings and good for you! Thanks for sharing.
Love you Keith Whitley, Lorrie and family. I saw Keith 1 month before he went to heaven. What a beautiful man and singer. He is missed dearly. From Pennah neese, Fort Bragg, CA. USA. My prayer for the whole Whitley family still.
+kerry evans Greetings from the US to you SIR! Don't give up on the people in the USA,its our stupid government.Maybe this election that is coming up will really make a true and honest change in our country.See Ya Friend!
+kerry evans Hello over in Ireland !! My father was half Irish and I have an Irish name 'Egan'. Been listening to country music since early 70s, and although I love all kinds of music, country music is my favorite if had to choose. I discovered Keith Whitley not long before he died. Been listening to him since--a beautiful voice with a lot of feeling !! I hope you keep listening to "older" country, as there are so many great artists--many are gone now, but can never be replaced. I got Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings autographs in Las Vegas in 1991 and treasure meeting them. Both so nice and thanked me for asking for their autographs. Saw Randy Travis, George Strait, and Merle Haggard in concert and all so amazing. Keep listening Kerry ...
+MaryElizabeth99 you bet i will.....I have seen them all you mentioned even J Cash WJ...M H..Kris K...Alison K and my fav PattyL...but Keith W its personal..i got sober in 1989 in lake Tahoe ...thank god.... Did you know Vince Gill wrote go rest high...for Keith...and later his bro...
+kerry evans Your story is wonderful !! I saw Frank Sinatra and John Denver in 1975, and Liza Minnelli in 1980 at Harrahs in Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is a favorite spot of mine since then. Wow, you have seen a lot of the country artists. It is wonderful you came over to see your country singers you love. I never knew if country music was popular in Europe. I don't think it's an accident that Keith Whitley was there to help you become sober, yes very personal for you this man. I am very happy for you. I still feel so bad that Keith left us so young, but here he was able to help you Kerry. I am not too familiar with Patty L. or Allison K. but will check them out. I have heard of Patty L. for many years. I love Vince Gill and he helped me over a rough time in 1985 with a song on the radio called If It Weren't for Him. He has a beautiful and unique voice. And yes, I love his song Go Rest High, but I didn't realize he wrote it for Keith. I will check that out...thank you! I heard he wrote for his brother. Vince is a very talented and kind man. Some of his guitar solos are amazing. I hope I can see him in concert one day. Have a beautiful rest of your week !!
I will Vince Gill the one who got away i lived in Tahoe from 1984 to 1999 California side then i came home to Ireland i saw my first concert in 1981 in the calneva smokey robionson sinatra owned it then yep its a small world..Vince wrote go rest high for Keith..a year later his bro died so he reworked the song for him such a powerfuĺ sòng...As for his gutar licks did you know Vince Gill was invited to be in the Dire straits band By mark knopfler that how good he is i have seen video of Eric clapton checking out his style Thank god for music...
i was a young teen when he passed and it made a huge affect on my life and new music... he is an amazing artist...i will listen too ur great tunes for a long time...
I just lost my brother to alcohol 5 months ago. He was my lifelong best friend and life isnt the same without him. I cant believe that so many people live for years with these problems but my brother only drank for 1 year and died of a heart attack after quitting cold turkey at age 47. When does it stop hurting the survivors? I know life has to go on but im so sad...sisters need their brothers and im devastated that he left me.
I went through the same thing, Sven. I lost my wife of 31 years, and I can empathize with how you feel. But through it all, love and life are beautiful and live on despite the hurt.
Only Keith knew the demons he fought. It is true, he was no stranger to the rain. I am so thankful he fought those demons as long as he did to give his fans these heartfelt songs. A true legend so deserving of much better days than life dished out to him. Rest In Eternal Peace...
How do you not LOVE Keith Whitley? He is a legend right along side George Jones, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams... If the world was a country song, it would sure be a wonderful place.
I Still Think Of Yesterday I Heard Sad News Jackie Keith Whitley[1] (July 1, 1954[1][2] - May 9, 1989), known professionally as Keith Whitley, was an American country music singer. During his short career, Whitley charted 19 singles on the Billboard country charts. Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Whitley grew up in nearby Sandy Hook. Whitley began his career there in 1970, performing in Ralph Stanley's band. Establishing himself as a lead singer in bluegrass music, Whitley moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983 and began his recording career there. His first Top 20 Country Hit single, "Miami, My Amy", was released in 1986. While touring for his album L.A. to Miami, he married country singer Lorrie Morgan. In 1988, his first three singles from his studio album Don't Close Your Eyes, the title song, "When You Say Nothing at All" and "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" were number-one hits. Several years of alcoholism severely deteriorated his health and he died in 1989 at the age of 34. His later two singles, "I Wonder Do You Think of Me" and "It Ain't Nothin'", were released after his death. Whitley continues to influence an entire generation of singers and songwriters.
i remember, long long ago, long time fan of Keith, because of this song....then one day, I heard on the radio.....From the Late Keith Whitley....I died right there along with him.....That was my awakening.....Sad Sad memory....
@@countrygirlcountrymusiclov9947 dumbass the crap you here today is NOT COUNTRY music. You must be like 21 to make such a stupid statement. REAL country music died about 2 decades ago.
He passed in May 1989...I was 8 years old and at home with the chickenpox the day he died, and listened to the radio all day as they played all of his songs. I'll never forget it.
I love Keith Whitley and i always will even though i'm only 16 years old I've grown up on him..my dad was a fan and i'm a proud follower of him also =] I wont close my eyes unless if i'm listening to this song and picture him sitting there singing this..i love his voice. R.I.P Keith Whitley your absolutely outstanding in my world, and always will:)
Keith was such a great singer. he is gone, but his music lives on forever!! i love his singing and he doesn't go crazy on stage, he just acts like himself. some performers try to act show off on stage, but Keith always performed like himself.
Of all of the amazing performers who sang this song, I feel Keith had the most beautiful voice to sing these incredible words. How I miss him being with us... May God continue to let him rest in the peace he was unable to get while here on earth...
Look at that, over one million hits, Keith Whitley, I can sing, and have a deep voice, But much to shy to take my sound to a mic. I love singing this song, and others.. I tell you, If only Keith was still alive , imagine the songs he would have created. He is one of my favorite singers of ALL TIME!
i was 2 years old when this was performed. at my aunts house. and believe it or not i still remember that night. yes i was 2 years old. how i have no clue. was 2 am when this song playd. house was full of family i havnt seen now in 12 years. oh how i miss those days. great song. that fits an unreplaceable memmory. :(
What an amazing voice. Such passion and feeling. Wish someone could have helped him with his pain. I've been there and by the grace of God, I'm alive today, but dang life can sure hurt sometimes. Bless his memory, Liz
This song I hear lots time on radio one classic song. Live on forever years come. My favorte song. A plus song and video one greatest country singer he was a Star. I enjoy all his music from the start. He should get that Hall of Fame. One my favorte singer since he start. This songs grow in your heart.
What has happened to todays music? Dont get me wrong, we still have some beautiful music being made today but this is in a class by itself. R.I.P KW you were a true musician that left us too early.
what ever happened to the days when all u needed was a guitar to make your music and one voice for the words? where a singer was a true talent to behold? why can't we go back to those days?
This was one his last performances & like lorrie in an interview after his passing....that he looked troubled, that he lost that sparkle...& she was right...I wish this fine performer could've wanted the help he so needed....who knew!?...#greatloss
Bridget Harding just saw your post.. I thought the very same thing.. he did look troubled and did not have that sparkle.. saw the video " The life and times of Keith Whitley"
First loves are hard to get over sometimes, then magic happens. That was just a lesson you needed to learn before God arranged for you to met your true love, the love that will live in your heart forever. The one that whispers with his last breaths of life, "I love You". ~~~~~ Thank you for this post, I love Keith Whitley's music. He can never be replaced.
he stands all alone at the top of the talent heap. Marty, Conway, Mighty Merle, George-man u guys were awesome and i love u but this guy just had that special voice that went some where else.
Love this man...taken much too soon...but he lives forever in our hearts...Heaven is so lucky to have him....We're trying to manage, Keith..you just keep singing to those Angels and Jesus Christ...see you again, buddy....

I will Vince Gill the one who got away i lived in Tahoe from 1984 to 1999 California side then i came home to Ireland i saw my first concert in 1981 in the calneva smokey robionson sinatra owned it then yep its a small world..Vince wrote go rest high for Keith..a year later his bro died so he reworked the song for him such a powerfuĺ sòng...As for his gutar licks did you know Vince Gill was invited to be in the Dire straits band By mark knopfler that how good he is i have seen video of Eric clapton checking out his style
Thank god for music...
i was a young teen when he passed and it made a huge affect on my life and new music... he is an amazing artist...i will listen too ur great tunes for a long time...
Rest In Peace Keith Whitley, you would be a Grandaddy now, only if you were still here to see them😢
I just lost my brother to alcohol 5 months ago.
My first wife passed in 89. I couldn't listen to this song for about two decades
I went through the same thing, Sven. I lost my wife of 31 years, and I can empathize with how you feel. But through it all, love and life are beautiful and live on despite the hurt.
So sorry for your loss Sven. God Bless.
i ve been listening country for over 40 years since i was a toddler!!! i never got over keith s passing!!! i miss him so much.
This man had more talent than he ever realized. And I'm sad that he's gone.
Beautiful... this guy had a fabulous voice so smooth... could just listen to this song over and over! a beautiful song too!
Only Keith knew the demons he fought. It is true, he was no stranger to the rain. I am so thankful he fought those demons as long as he did to give his fans these heartfelt songs. A true legend so deserving of much better days than life dished out to him. Rest In Eternal Peace...
only .those.that goes through the rain .can understand .troubles .come .and some dont.
How do you not LOVE Keith Whitley? He is a legend right along side George Jones, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams... If the world was a country song, it would sure be a wonderful place.
I feel like the audio back then couldn't capture his voice completely. Really wish he was still here, he's definetely a country legend. RIP Keith
I know right? can't touch Keith Whitley.

Just thinking of Keith still breaks my heart. We also lost more REAL country music.

What has happened to todays music? Dont get me wrong, we still have some beautiful music being made today but this is in a class by itself. R.I.P KW you were a true musician that left us too early.
I just heard this song performed on "The Voice" and wanted to hear the original. beautiful.
He did pretty good didn't he? I'm very protective of Keith Whitley's music, very few people can do it justice.
Happy 60 birthday to the late great Keith Whitley!. :)
great song been sober for almost 27 years and it is always a good choice
Really wish we could have this guy back :(
what ever happened to the days when all u needed was a guitar to make your music and one voice for the words? where a singer was a true talent to behold? why can't we go back to those days?
This was one his last performances & like lorrie in an interview after his passing....that he looked troubled, that he lost that sparkle...& she was right...I wish this fine performer could've wanted the help he so needed....who knew!?...#greatloss
Bridget Harding just saw your post.. I thought the very same thing.. he did look troubled and did not have that sparkle.. saw the video " The life and times of Keith Whitley"
I loved this guy.......I am still suffering his passing.........hearts and blessings out to Keith......
