Cathy Mcmenomy I know all about just how hard being an addict myself and having an addicted mother although she was the nicest lady you could meet and would never even guess she had addiction to opiates for legit physical pain issues at about half my life she just wasn't the same ever again. She divorced my Father bc she thought that he wasn't exciting enough they were married 22 year's. After she had gotten sober she was miserable bc she felt so guilty and missed my Dad greatly. Had she had tried sooner to get him back he would've. He does not do drugs not smoke or even take a prescription narcotic if it was prescribed for surgery..lol the reason I'm rambling is bc I know u are tired. I can sense it even though u love him. It's very hard myself I'm in recovery to forgive my mom now that she's passed I forgive her for having being defeated by her own battles with demons but she slowly just withered away and after her parents died in '09 she grieved until the day she died. She wouldn't go to therapy she seemed to enjoy misery and being the martyr/victim. This song she used to play in Allison's first CD I never knew it or forgot that HE HAD SANG IT AND WAS HIS.. BOY WAS I GLAD TO HEAR HIS VERSION..IT GIVES ME SUCH A GOOD FEELING LISTENING TO HJM AND ALOT OF MUSIC. IM 32 AND I LOVE OLD-SCHOOL COUNTRY. THESE DAYS IT'S JUST NOT WHAT I GREW UP TO..LOL. THESE WERE CLASSY, JUST SIMPLY WELL THOUGHT OUT LYRICS AND THE NEW SOUND THEY WERE TRYING TO FIND THE PRODUCER I BELIEVE SAID IN HIS INTERVIEW. I ALSO FEEL CONNECTION WITH HIS DEATH. ALMOST THE EXACT SAME WAY MY CHILDS FATHER DIED IN THE MATTER OF 2 HOURS AND FOUND OUT HE HAD BEEN SMOKING CRACK -COCAINE..HE HAD ME COME GET HIM TO GET AWAY FROM HIS NEW GIRLFRIEND THEY WERE FIGHTING ABOUT HOW A VIOLENT DRJNK GETS AND I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO GO..I WAS ALMOST OVER HIM. I WAS SEEING SOMEONE MYSELF BUT I THOUGHT I HAD A FEELING A YANKING TUG IN MY GUT, CALL IT INTUITION..TO GO GET HIM. WELL I COULD TELL I'D NEVER SEEN HIM SO JUST OVERWHELMED AND NEW THAT THIS WAS BAD..SOMETHING WAS JUST GONE INSIDE HIM. HE WAS TROUBLED SOUL AND NEVER COULD SEE HOW MUCH HE WAS LOVED. HE AND I HAD BEEN SPLIT UP A YEAR HAD A 4YR OLD SON WE SPENT THAT WHOLE DAY WITH. HE WAS TRYING TO GET BACK WITH ME BUT THE SHIP DONE SAILED I COULDN'T HAVE THE DRUNK STUFF AND DOPE PEOPLE AROUND OUR KID. ALTHOUGH HE BINGED LIKE KEITH HE COULD GO A LONG TIME W/O IT. WELL TO MAKE THIS SHORTER..HE HAD ME DROP HIM OFF AND IT WAS AT HIS BUDDYS AND HIS WIFES APT. HE LIVED JUST A FEW BLOCKS DOWN I JUST KNEW HE WAS SO ENRAGED BY HER TANTALIZING HIM..THEY WERE KNOWN TO BE PARTYING HARD AND HE WAS OUT OF CONTROL. HE WAS A PERFECT FATHER AND GOOD PERSON EXCEPT IT WAS JECKYLL/HYDE. HE TRIED TO GET IN THEIR HOUSE AND PUNCHED A WINDOW SO HARD AND DEEP IT HIT A MAIN ARTERY IN HIS ARM. THEY HAD HIM TIED OFF BUT THE ALCOHOL THINNED THE BLOOD HE RAN BACK TO HIS BUDDIES AFTER HE DID IT..PANICKING. I GOT A CALL FROM THE BUDDY AND IT HAD ONLY BEEN 2 HOURS HE WAS ALIVE AND THEN GOT THAT CALL I WAS CONCERNED THOUGHT HE WOULD BD OK..HE LOST SO MUCH BLOOD HE BLED TO DEATH ON THE WAY TO THE HOSPITAL. THATS WHAT TRIGGERED ME INTO PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE. GOD DOES THINGS FOR A REASON WE HAVE A SWEET CUTE CHARMING LIL' BOY HES GREATLY TALENTED INCREDIBLEY SMART...AND HE HAS MADE MY LIFE TURN FROM TRADGEDY TO KNOWING LOVE FOR MYSELF AND LOVING HIM INFINITELY. HE DOESN'T REMEMBER HIS DAD I HAVE TOLD HIM STORIES HE WAS A GOID DAD DESPITE HIS DRUG AND ALCOHOL. HE LOVED KIDS WAS GOOD WITH THEM AND MY SON INHERITED THAT AND COMPASSION HIS DAD LACKED BUT IM THANKFUL HE DIDNT SEE ME IN MY ADDICTION WITH PILLS. I HID IT AND MY MOM KEPT HIM ALOT. BUT I PRAY THE CYCLE IS BROKEN. HES A GOOD KID. IM JUST NOW TEACHING HIM ABOUT THE WORD OF GOD. HE IS MY ANGEL. THANKS FOR LISTENING I NEEDED TO WRITE THIS OUT,.LOL SORRY FOR JOURNALING ON HERE. IT'S JUST I FEEL THE CONNECTION WITH LORRIE SHE COULD'VE STAYED IT WOULD'VE BEEN WORSE. LEAST HE DIDNT SUFFER. HE WAS A GOOD PERSON THATS WHAT IM EMOHASIZING PPL THINK BC ADDICTS HAVE DONE BAD THINGS THAT ALL ARE BAD, IM SURE YOU KNOW ALL OF THIS. YOU SEEM LIKE STAND BY YOUR MAN WOMAN..MUCH RESPECT AND PRAYERS. THERES HOPE IT WILL ALL WORK OUT. FAITH HAS LOTS TO DO WITH THE DRIVE TO BE CLEAN. THE WORD..MEETINGS GROUPS. GOD BLESS..I WILL PRAY FOR YOU ALL. IM WRITING IT DOWN RIGHT NOW. GOOD LUCK.
Country roads, late night conversations on gravel roads, looking at the stars in the sky, wondering where we will be when we are older. I'm older now, missing the good old days..
My sweet husband played this for me the night I tried to end my life and he took me to the hospital. It gave me hope, and helped me come through it intact and with him waiting to catch me! I love that man and know what true love is. I hope everyone finds their perfect match.
I'm 27, and was born a few months after he died. He is my favorite singer by far. It was George Jones growing up, but after hearing about every Whitley song, he he became my favorite. His consistency in great songs is unmatched in my opinion. Especially in the very short time he was mainstream country. Reason why he kept having hits after he passed away. He reminds of a mix between Jones, Haggard, Willie, and Waylon. His vocal range and ability to change his voice from deep to light, or vice versa, is what makes his voice so great. That and you can feel every word he sings.
I agree with you. When I was younger, my family members would always test me to see if I would get the singer's right. I'm talking all the way from Hank Sr to Tim McGraw during those days.
Andrew Hagan. I swear when you go listen to Brooks or Straight, etc after listening to him... He makes them sound amateur. They don't come effing close!!
:) you aren’t a damned yankee. Just a Yankee 😅 your kids if born down here would be Damned Yankees. Their kids can be Southern. No joke I used to hear that all the time when my great grand parents and grandparents were still around. I really didn’t know what the hell they meant I just figured it worked the opposite way, too. 😂

Thank you to the parents of Keith , you made the greatest traditional country singer of all time. A true gift for those who are old school country fans.
I first heard Kieth in the early `80`s with Ricky Skaggs. Found everything he recorded. Still the best voices to hit country music. My favourite is Kentucky Blue Bird...
@@lanceobrien Yep, both he and Skaggs were close friends and had performed together as early as 1970, when bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley asked both of the then-15-year-olds to join the then-current incarnation of his Clinch Mountain Boys after he was amazed how both of them sounded just like him and his late brother Carter (1925-1966).
My father died from alcohol the same way, in 1983. He was 40. It’s hard to believe that I’ll be 48 this weekend, just about 40 years without the man that I barely even remember anymore. He was a man of few words, this song reminds me of him. I miss you dad!

Just heard it today for the first time in a long time. I dont listen to Country music as much as i used to, but everytime i do, i realize how great music truly used to be. You actually feel something , makes ya think of family or loved ones… Now i just feel today’s music is just so… Empty? Emotionless? Its strange, but this was and always be quality music.

His eyes are of that of a dying alcoholic. Alcohol is cunning, baffling and powerful. It drags you through years of torture before finally killing you. It runs everyone out of your life and you end up alone and at the end of the road. Some people do get help, but recovery rates are around 3 out 100 alcoholics that attempt to quit actually do and never drink again. Most die. His eyes are of a person, a soul trapped in a circle of horror that they can't get out of.
@@desertweasel6965 Perhaps, but one never knows why one chooses alcohol. i myself know too well the pain of mental illness. Perhaps Keith too knew that pain of mental illness.
There are several great country music stars from the 80's & 90's, but I personally think that Kieth Whitley is the only one that would've given George Strait a run for his money.
What I wouldn't give to go back to the simplicity of these days. Do you remember what it was like back then how sweet times were how simple. 2024...Still listening to one of the greatest country songs ever composed. 🤠
He's amazing ! My husband suffers from alcohol and addiction , earlier in our marriage this was his song to me,the struggle still goes on ....I love him because I know what's underneath it all.
GOOD LUCK.

That and you can feel every word he sings.
somebody in your life had a positive influence on your taste in music. thank them.
I agree with you. When I was younger, my family members would always test me to see if I would get the singer's right. I'm talking all the way from Hank Sr to Tim McGraw during those days.
Andrew Hagan

Andrew Hagan. I swear when you go listen to Brooks or Straight, etc after listening to him... He makes them sound amateur. They don't come effing close!!

One of the greatest voices of all time. His music never gets old.
Hello Susan 👋 how are you doing
I first heard Kieth in the early `80`s with Ricky Skaggs. Found everything he recorded. Still the best voices to hit country music. My favourite is Kentucky Blue Bird...
@@lanceobrien Yep, both he and Skaggs were close friends and had performed together as early as 1970, when bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley asked both of the then-15-year-olds to join the then-current incarnation of his Clinch Mountain Boys after he was amazed how both of them sounded just like him and his late brother Carter (1925-1966).
Almost as good as George Strait huh
He was Sooo Awesome n Gorgeous!!!!!! Wut a Shame for him Lori n their kids!!!!! Also the World!!!!!!
My father died from alcohol the same way, in 1983. He was 40. It’s hard to believe that I’ll be 48 this weekend, just about 40 years without the man that I barely even remember anymore. He was a man of few words, this song reminds me of him. I miss you dad!

Me unfortunately, I lost my grandparents this year, they loved this
Here
He had a pure honest voice that makes me cry. RIP Keith hope you find the peace you could not find in life
So true he was the best among equal: my late wife loved his songs she played them every night before falling asleep smiles
He had it all: the voice, the looks, the money, people in his life yet such very sad eyes...
Just what I was thinking. His eyes say he's seen too much and too much of it was heartbreaking.
