  • This is the first time Keith sang "Don't Close Your Eyes" at the Opry. He is introduced to the audience by the legendary Grandpa Jones.
Using obscene language will get your comment denied & removed. Don't use it. Show us that you're educated enough to communicate your thoughts without using it. Those of you who have, thank you so much for the heartfelt comments and sharing with us what Keith meant to you.
My eternal gratitude to Troy (waylonhoss), one of my all-time favorite people, for setting me up with the clip... almost 17 years ago.
To those of you who got here from the link on wsmonline.com, wsmonline.com/e... , welcome! It's an honor to have you!

I face a few of Keith's demons and I can tell you...he is one of the most amazing artist ever. Please never judge Keith for he had the most amazing gift I've ever been priviledged to see. It doesn't matter how many pills, counseling session, etc. that you undergo, sometimes...you fall back on what is familiar and comfortable and occasionally that is alcohol. It does not mean you are a sorry individual, just that you battle demons. Keith battled his demons to the very end and did so much good.

If Keith would have lived he would been the greatest of his generation . All of music lost when he died . As far as the drinking it's obvious he was numbing the pain of a failing marriage and I don't think any less of him as a man because of it .God bless K.W.

This is the best country singer ever...the most under appreciated because of his untimely death. Anybody who hears his voice will understand. Such a shame we couldn't hear it for years to come.

Keith Whitley... a true honest-to-goodness *country* singer. Nearly 3 years ago, I visited his grave. I had to ask why he had to leave us way too soon. Keith, you are truly missed, dude. God rest your soul.

This is one of the greatest country songs ever. But let's be honest. It's also one of the most depressing. If you've ever been in a relationship that you know is over but you just keep hoping it's not and then finally you realize you're the only one puting any love or emotion in it, this song rings true and loud. I guess that's why it's so powerful.

Keith was one of the absolute best Country Singers to ever grace the Stage of The Grand Ole Opry, hands down. He sang from his heart, and poured every ounce of energy from his heart, and soul straight into every single song.

This is one of the best Keith Whitley songs ever and I have to say that it would be great to have folks like this still in Country Music today. There are a few great ones, but not many at all. We do have Reba and Lorrie Morgan and of course Chris Young, Luke Bryan, Alan Jackson and of course Tim McGraw and Kenny, but it's getting a lot harder to find the Country in Country Music anymore. I welcome the times that George Strait and George Jones and Loretta Lynn have something new. Just a thought

Is it just me or did anyone else hear the catch in his voice at the end of the song? Was there more meaning in this song, at that performance , for Keith than anyone knew? My heart hurts........he must have had lots of demons. He always seemed so sad, kinda just going through the motions.

1:31-1:35 is the reason that Keith Whitley is the unchallenged King of pitch, emotion, voice control and country music. Nobody can bend those notes and put a chill up your spine like Keith Whitley. Period.

Couldn’t agree more. I don’t like to compare artists but Keith Whitley is side by side with Patsy Cline, another country gem lost too soon, had the ability to sound even better live than in studio recordings and had perfect pitch and ear training. They set the standard for country music.

This is my favorite Keith Whitley's song... I learnt about him many years ago while lunching in a little cafe whose owner is a country music fan and he played Keith's CD. I asked him who the amazing singer was, and that was when I was hooked on Keith.. He is so awesome.
